Burial Vault Definition:

A burial vault is a sealed outer burial receptacle which protects against moisture, the weight of the earth, and the
elements, in a subsoil situation.

Why a Burial Vault?

In most areas of the United States and Canada, a cemetery requires the casket to be enclosed within a grave liner or
burial vault. There are a few differences in burial vaults and grave liners.
The weight of the earth and heavy equipment used to dig graves far exceeds what an unprotected casket can
withstand. A burial vault made of specially formulated, reinforced concrete is designed to support these elements and
more.
The concrete becomes stronger as it continues to cure after being placed in the ground. If a vault was properly
buried many years ago it could actually be stronger today then when it was first submitted during the burial.
Sealed, lined burial vaults are made to place protection from impact and the elements between the earth and the
casketed remains of a loved one. Most concrete vaults are made to exceed cemetery requirements for strength and
rigidity.
The various different types of burial vaults are intended to help protect the casket and to help keep your families
grave from settling to much. Depending on which vault and the amount of protection you wish will ultimately determine
your cost.

Why a Lined Burial Vault is Better?

Superior engineering and advanced technology combines with hand craftsmanship to produce every Wilbert vault.
High-quality structural concrete is the basis of our vaults' strength and durability. Additional strength is added in the
bonded interior liners, made of high-impact thermoformed plastics such as ABS Marbelon®, ABS Trilon® or
Strentex®. Beauty and additional strength are added with interior linings of stainless steel, copper or bronze.

Not All Burial Receptacles Provide the Same Protection

There are several factors that weigh upon a burial vault. For instance, there is the heavy equipment necessary for
maintaining the cemetery grounds that pass over the burial vault during cemetery operations. To keep the grave from
collapsing under the weight, a strong, durable vault is essential.

Types of Burial Receptacles

While there are several different outer receptacles from which to choose, the levels of protection offered by each
vary dramatically. The bell vault, a lightweight fiberglass or plastic vault, is designed to be stacked and stored above
ground for a long period of time before burial. The grave box, an unlined concrete box with holes in the base allows
ground water to escape. For the most protection, you'll want to consider a lined concrete burial vault, a long lasting
receptacle with its coated exterior and lined interior.
