Johnston, Althea M.    

Althea M. Johnston, 85, of Terre Haute died Monday, April 28, 2008, in Union Hospital. She
was born March 1, 1923, in Terre Haute, to Cary Landes and Louise McCullough Landes
Myers. Althea was a retired cosmetologist from Meis. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Robert F. Johnston, who passed away Nov. 25, 1994.Survivors include her
daughter, Gladys Mason; stepson, Jack Johnson; stepdaughter, Pat Cailotto; sister, Marjorie
Thomas; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and three sisters. Althea was a
member of Centenary United Methodist Church, the White Shrine, and the Hairdressers
Association. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home,
605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. Paul Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial
Park. Visitation will be 1 p.m. until services Thursday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be

Myers, Robert Arnold    

Robert Arnold Myers, 88, of Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at Union
Hospital. He was born Feb. 6, 1920, in Jasonville, the son of Arnold Myers and Lillian Reubelt
Myers. He married Evelyn Yanksy Bell on June 23, 1984, and she survives. He was a retired
elementary principal for 32 years with the Vigo County School Corp. He served in the U.S. Air
Force.Survivors include his wife Evelyn Y. Bell-Myers; three children, Dr. and Mrs. Robert
Michael Myers of Strongsville, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beeson of Peru, Ind., and Dr. and
Mrs. Brent Arnold Myers, of Palm Bay, Fla.; a stepson, Frank Bell and Susan Sharp of
Marshall, Ill.; grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Myers, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Myers, Mr.
and Mrs. Shane and Carol Bell, Ms. Shelly Myers, Ms. Elizabeth Beeson, Mr. and Mrs. Phillipe
and Gretchen Navarre, Mr. Aaron Myers, Miss Lauren Myers and Mr. Joshua Bell;
great-grandchildren, Christopher, Zachary, Alyssa, Ryan, Michael, Amanda, and Kayla
Myers, Megan Bell, Chad Bell and Kai Navarre. He was preceded in death by his parents. He
was a member of the Local, State and National Teachers Org., Vigo County Retired Teachers
Org., Indiana State Retired Teachers, past president of Terre Haute Exchange Club, Wabash
Valley Pilots Association, and Experimental Aircraft Association. Services are 1 p.m. Friday at
Roselawn Funeral Home. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Interment
will follow at a later date in the Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
made to the Union Hospital Foundation-Diabetes Education.  
Essex, James A.   

James A. Essex, 49, of Terre Haute, died at 3:02 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2008, p.m. in Terre
Haute Regional Hospital. He worked for years in the cable TV industry and was recently in the
trucking industry. He was born Nov. 6, 1958, in Wichita, Kan., to Charles Essex and Rosalie
Stewart Essex. He is survived by his wife, Carol Essex; three sons, Chris Essex and his friend
Ami Chambers of Terre Haute, Brent Essex of Jasonville and David Essex of Terre Haute; his
mother, Patricia Essex; two brothers, Bill Essex of Terre Haute and Rick Essex of Texas; one
sister, Melody Burns of Indianapolis; one stepbrother, Steve Kuykendall; an uncle, Jim Essex
of Colorado; the mother of Brent and Chris, Sherri Sapp of Jasonville; and several cousins,
nieces, and nephews. He enjoyed boating, fishing, camping and lighting fires in his fireplace.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in DeBaun Springhill
Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with the Rev. Mark Messmer officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m.
until 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park with military
graveside services by Lawton-Byrum VFW Post 972. Pallbearers will be Brian Shoemaker,
Jeff Steele, Chris Stroot, Jim Holt, Jerry Steele, and Ken Copper. In lieu of flowers, the family
suggests that for those who desire, memorial contributions may be made to a trust fund set
up for his son David Essex c/o First Financial Bank.  
Chilton, Loretta    

CLINTON — Loretta Chilton, 93, of Clinton, died at 3:27 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2008, in
West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. She was born Aug. 31, 1914, in Ireland, to
Leopold Lorey and Barbara Morgenroth Lorey. She was a homemaker. Survivors included
her son, Philip Chilton and his wife Terry of Clinton; four daughters, Beverly Allen of
Plainfield, Paula Vitalie and her husband Charles of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., Marcia
Vernon and her husband Jim of Tucson, Ariz., and Nancy Miller and her husband Jerry of
Clinton; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.She was
preceded in death by her husband, Paul Chilton, on July 26, 1980; and eight brothers.She
was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Clinton, Catholic Women’s Club, St. Jude Bridge
Club, Mothers Bridge Club, Talley Bridge Club and Catholic Women’s Bridge Club.Prayer
service at 10:45 a.m. Monday in Karanovich-Giovanini Funeral Home, 408 Vine St., in Clinton,
followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Church with Father
Joseph Villa officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday in
the funeral home with rosary being recited at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made

Bensinger, Murlgene Bruce    

Murlgene Bruce Bensinger, 71, of Terre Haute, died at 2:18 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008. She
was born Nov. 3, 1936, to Walter Guy Bruce and Mary Isis Stelle Bruce, in southern Vigo
County. She retired from Terre Haute First National Bank, bookkeeping department, Jan. 3,
2002, after 21 years of service. She is survived by her husband, Edward D. Bensinger of
Terre Haute, whom she married Nov. 3, 1961; two daughters, Melody Dellinger and her
husband Dennis of Kansas and Melaine Bensinger of Florida; one son, Marc Bensinger of
Florida; one brother, Larry G. Bruce and his wife, Pam of Indianapolis; one sister, Shirley
Kelley of Terre Haute; three uncles, Wayne Tilford of Bloomingdale, Ken Tilford and his wife
Ramona of Terre Haute and Cecil Tilford of Terre Haute; 15 cousins; five nieces; two
nephews; five great-nieces; nine great-nephews; several great-great-nieces and
great-great-nephews; and numerous extended family members and friends. She was
preceded in death by her two infant sons, Christopher and David; her parents; her paternal
grandparents, Surrell and Sallie Wonders; her maternal grandparents, Alfred and Mabel
Tilford; six aunts; six uncles; four cousins; one nephew; and one second-cousin.Murlgene was
a 1954 graduate of Pimento School, Pimento, where she was a member of the girls 4-H Club;
the Y-Teen Club; Latin Club; and was class news reporter throughout the school years. She
was an honorary member of Jobs Daughters Bethel 2 Terre Haute; a 51-year member of
Pimento Chapter 516 Order of the Eastern Star where she held numerous offices; past
president of the Knights Templar Auxiliary; and was a past leader of GSA Troops. She was a
childhood member of Pimento Methodist Church. As an adult, she became a member of
Montrose Methodist Church, Terre Haute and was a charter member of the C.O.D. Sunday
School Class. Montrose Methodist Church became, in later years, Memorial United Methodist
Church and she was a life-time member.Her children were always the joy of her life. She wrote
stories and books and created unusual characters for the amusement of her family. She
loved the Tilford Family Reunions. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing art
work.Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, in Callahan and
Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Ken Tilford officiating. Burial will be in
Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday with memorial services by
Pimento Chapter 516 Order of the Eastern Star at 7 p.m. The family kindly requests that in

Egly, Helen E.    

Helen E. Egly, 88, of Lapel, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2008, in Community Hospital of
Anderson. She was born on Jan. 9, 1920, in Terre Haute, to Americus and Estella (Brown)
Bourke. She graduated from Wiley High School in Terre Haute in 1938 and received her
teaching degree from Indiana State Teachers College in 1943. She received a nursing
degree from Indiana University in 1947. Helen taught high school home economics for two
years and was then a school nurse. She was a member of the Central Christian Church in
Anderson and a former member of the Central Christian Church in Terre Haute. She was a
member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honorary.She is survived by
three children, David (wife, Cindy) Egly of Lapel, Sarah (husband, Mike) Ayres of Sugar Land,
Texas, and Diana Egly of Mountainview, Calif.; three grandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and one sister, Olevia Cascadden of Lapel.She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband of 58 years, Richard Egly; one daughter, Joan Egly; and one
brother, Ned Bourke.Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Roselawn Memorial
Park Chapel in Terre Haute with the Rev. Rebecca Zelensky officiating. Burial will follow in
Roselawn Memorial Park, Terre Haute. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Scott E.
Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 North Main Street, Lapel and from 10 a.m. until the time of

Huston, Ruth M.    

Ruth M. Huston, 87, of Broomfield, Colo., formerly of Terre Haute, passed away from
complications of Alzheimer’s disease on Jan. 13, 2008. She was born on Jan. 22, 1920, to
Richard and Lottie Leachman, in North Terre Haute. She married Darrell M. Huston on June
12, 1943, in Denver. Darrell retired from G.T.E. and preceded her in death in 1987. She
retired as cafeteria manager with Vigo County School District. Survivors include her daughter,
Cathy Huston Thompson and son-in-law Greg of Broomfield; grandchildren, Rob and Theresa
Thompson of Castle Rock, Colo., and Jennifer and Dan Horath of Riverton, Wyo.; great-
grandchildren, Elisha and John Thompson, Lincoln, Robyn and Will Horath; and numerous
nieces and nephews.Ruth was a 54-year member of Terre Haute Order of Eastern Star 43
and past guardian Job’s Daughters Bethel 2. O.E.S. 43 will conduct graveside services 11 a.
m. Saturday, May 10, 2008, in Roselawn Memorial Park, Section B with the family present.

Wright, Karen J. Parco    

Karen J. Parco Wright, 54, passed on peacefully Saturday morning, May 3, 2008, after a
courageous three month battle with rare complications from chemotherapy for lymphoma.
She was born on March 23, 1954, in Clinton, to Ralph and Mary Rendaci Parco. She was a
third grade teacher at Meadows Elementary School for 32 years, and has deeply touched the
lives of students, parents, and fellow teachers.Karen is survived by her husband, James
Wright; a son, Douglas and his wife Jessica; a grandson, Garrett James Wright; a
granddaughter, Addison Jean Wright, who will be born in June; and a daughter, Diana, all of
Terre Haute. Also surviving are her father and stepmother, Ralph and Jane Parco of Clinton;
a devoted sister, Patricia Stark and her husband Jon of Brownsburg; a loving sister-in-law,
Linda Wright of Seattle; several aunts and uncles; nephews; and cousins. Karen was
preceded in death by her mother, Mary Parco; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and
Anna Mae Wright; grandparents; aunts and uncles; and a cousin.Karen was a devoted and
loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She served others with a deep commitment and
unselfish love, and she leaves behind a legacy of service that will continue to inspire all who
knew her. She loved to travel with family and friends, and was known for her wonderful Italian
cooking skills which she often used to help others who were ill or needed support.Karen was
a board member of ARC of Vigo County, Gamma Phi Beta, Vigo County Teachers
Association, International Reading Association, and was the recipient of the Vigo County
Excellence in Education Award. She served as principal designee at Meadows Elementary
School. Karen was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, and had recently attended
Union Christian Church.Funeral services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday May 6, 2008
in Union Christian Church, 5350 East Hulman Drive, with Brother Mark Grayless officiating.
Burial will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday May 7, 2008 in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be

Vasquez, Elafonso "Poncho"    

Elafonso “Poncho” Vasquez, 59, of Brazil, Ind., passed away at 8:53 a.m. Friday May 2,
2008, at Regional Hospital. He was born May 2, 1949, in Harlingen, Texas to Rafiel Vasquez
and Victoria Garza. He was a marine and served in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife, Jean
Vasquez; three sons, Elafonso Vasquez Jr., Rafiel Vasquez and D.J. Vasquez; one daughter,
Shawna Vasquez; three brothers, Ray, Mike and Simon Vasquez; sisters, Jayne Kilgore,
Vickie MacIntosh and Polly Vasquez; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. Calling hours are 2
to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.  
Poff, Rosamae    

Rosamae Poff, 89, of Terre Haute, passed away Wednesday morning May 7, 2008 at Union
Hospital. She was born Aug. 22, 1918 in Vigo County, the daughter of Lester Edgerton and
Carmen Wells Edgerton. She married William Poff and he preceded her in death. Rosamae
was owner of the Poff’s Sporting Goods Stores from 1948 until 2007. She was a member of
the Maplewood Christian Church. She loved sporting goods, hunting and fishing. Survivors
include a son, James W. Poff and wife Betty of Terre Haute; a daughter, Patricia R. Moore
and husband Jack of S.C.; five grandchildren, William C. Poff and wife Martha of Terre
Haute, Timothy M. Poff and wife Karen, Lewis, James M. Poff and wife Sheri of Minnesota,
Michelle Mullens and husband Chuck of Terre Haute, and Melissa Hatcher and husband
Robert, S.C.; 13 great grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Her parents and
husband preceded her in death. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral
Home with the Revs. Mark Grayless and Craig Wininger officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.
m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Park.  
Johnson, Betty Jane Buzan   

Betty Jane Buzan Johnson, 83, of Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in her
residence in Davis Gardens Health Center. She was born April 17, 1925, in Terre Haute, the
daughter of Clarence William Buzan and Edith Rausch Buzan. She married James R.
Johnson on Aug. 19, 1949, and he preceded her in 1983. Betty was a registered nurse
graduating from Union Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. She opened and founded the
Vigo County Health Department Communicable Disease Clinic and was the director for many
years. She was also the director of nursing for several nursing homes in and around Terre
Haute, retiring from Davis Gardens Health Care Facility in 1993.Survivors include four
children, Jamie Johnson and Michael Page of Homosassa Springs, Fla., Greg Johnson of
Brazil, Trudy Rupska and husband Jim of Terre Haute, and Barbara Eichhorst and husband
Scott of Linton; grandchildren, Clint Johnson of Illinois, Andrew Rupska and wife Dianna of
Riley, Michael “Mickey” Rupska, Tony Rupska, Betsy Evans and Joe Evans, all of Terre
Haute; two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Dane Rupska of Linton; and several nieces and
nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brother, David Buzan;
and sister, Mary Ruth Schneider. She was a member of the Memorial United Methodist,
Daughters of the Nile and Delta Zeta Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority. Her hobbies
included gardening, walking and a love for birds, especially seagulls. She and her family
appreciate the years of caring provided by the staff of Davis Gardens Health Center. Funeral
services are 1 p.m. Friday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with the Rev.
Scott Johnson officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Friday in the funeral home. The ESA Sorority will have services just prior to the funeral
services Friday. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash
Valley.  
Elder, Mildred L.   

Mildred L. Elder, 94, of Phoenix, and formerly of Terre Haute, died Sunday, May 4, 2008.
She was born in Vincennes, on Jan. 15, 1914, to Herman Bailey Liston and Essie Mayfield
Liston. She retired from the former General Telephone Company as an operator. She is
survived by a stepson, James Elder; a stepdaughter, Judy Mullin; a sister-in-law, Virginia
Liston; three stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband, George M. Elder.While living in Terre
Haute, she was a member of the Central Christian Church, Daughters of the Nile, and
Telephone Pioneers. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Roselawn Chapel of
Memories with the Rev. Rebecca Zelensky officiating. DeBaun Funeral Homes and
Crematory assisted with the arrangements.  
Elliott, Ervin C.    

Ervin C. Elliott, 86, of Terre Haute, died at 3:22 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2008, in his residence
with his daughters, following years with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born on May 1, 1922, in
Terre Haute, the son of Ervin S. Elliott and Ona M. Reece Elliott. He retired from Commercial
Solvents Corporation.Survivors include his three daughters, Barbara Page Alford, Carol
Ellis, and Connie Steigmeyer and husband Tim; grandchildren, Anna Richards and husband
Kevin, Ramsey Ellis and wife Amanda, David Page and wife Jana, Scott Steigmeyer, Abby
Mason and husband Brad, Leslie Steigmeyer, Blaine Barrett and wife Kelly; great-
grandchildren, Devin and Raygann Richards, Ava Ellis, Danica Page, Bryson Jenkins,
Ashley, Dustin and Madison Barrett; his former wife and friend Grace Elliott; special cousins,
Alice Dressler and family and Curt Reece and family; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Elliott; and
special friend and longtime companion, Wilma Carithers and family. Other survivors include
nieces and nephews, Scott Ellwood and wife Betty, Bill Ellwood and wife Debbie, Tom Elliott,
Peggy Brown and husband Chris, Lou Ann Opsahl and husband David, and all their families
as well as many other cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth
Elliott; sister, Clara Ruth Ellwood; brother-in-law, Henry Ellwood; and nephew, Kenneth Alan
Elliott.Ervin graduated from Wiley High School and was a U.S. Army veteran during World
War II in the South Pacific. He was a drummer, beginning his career with Greenwood
Elementary Band and then with many local bands and a proud member of the Zorah Shrine
Drum and Bugle Corps. He was also a member of Social Lodge 86 Free and Accepted
Masons, Scottish Rite, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Moose Lodge.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Funeral Home Springhill Chapel, 85 E.
Springhill Drive, with Pastor Rick Swan officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation
is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home with Masonic Lodge service at 7 p.m. In lieu of
flowers, contributions to Shriners Children’s Hospital or Hospice of the Wabash Valley would
be appreciated. Special thanks to the caregivers, Doris Lee, Kim Shepherd and Karen
Myers, whose kindness and care allowed Ervin to remain in his home.  
Huddleson, Beulah Mae  

Beulah Mae Huddleson, 83, of Terre Haute, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008, in Union
Hospital. She was born Oct. 26, 1924, in Terre Haute, to William Shaffer and Pearl Halters
Shaffer. She married Donald Eugene Huddleson, on May 3, 1947, and he preceded her in
1989. Survivors include a daughter, Judith Stewart and her husband Gene; two sons,
Michael Huddleson and wife Helen and Steven Huddleson and wife Tina; grandchildren,
Robin Albrecht, Michelle Witty, Melissa Howard, Shannon Mauk, and Steven Huddleson; 14
great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Essie Marie Kirby and Anna
Mae Mills; and one brother, Forrest Shaffer, all of Terre Haute.She was preceded in death
by her parents, her husband, three sisters, Dorothy Shaffer, Delphina Shaffer and Helen
Shaffer; and one brother, Merle Shaffer. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount
Pleasant United Methodist Church. Private family services are scheduled for Tuesday in
Roselawn Funeral Home with Pastor Aaron Wheaton officiating. Burial is in Roselawn
Memorial Park.  
Evans, Carolyn Jane    

Carolyn Jane Evans, 74, of Terre Haute, died at 1 a.m. Sunday, May 11, 2008, in her son’s
residence in Odon. She was born March 6, 1934, in Terre Haute, to Edsel Max Fiscus and
Greta L. Hurst Fiscus. She was a retired custodian at Indiana State University.Survivors
include her three daughters, Marcie Randall and Cindy Lingbeck, both of Indianapolis, and
Melissa LaLoux of Terre Haute; four sons, James R. Evans of Odon, Gary L. Evans of
Greencastle, David L. Evans and Max A. Evans, both of Terre Haute; one sister, Beverly
Allen of Oblong, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.She was preceded in
death by her parents; and her husband, James A. Evans, on Jan. 25, 1987She was a
member of Foursquare Gospel Church. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Callahan-
DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, with Pastor Merrillyn Smith officiating. Burial
is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday in the
funeral home.  
Sherrill, Thelma E.    

Thelma E. Sherrill, 94, of Terre Haute died Monday, May 12, 2008, in Southwood Health
and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dec. 21, 1914, in Clinton, to Leonard W. Akers
and Loretta Jeffers Akers. She was a graduate of Indiana State University, a former teacher
of King Classical School, and was employed at the Newport Army Ammunition Depot, Terre
Haute Ordnance Depot, Harvey Aluminum Co., The Tumpane Co., and retired from the
Foundation Office at Indiana State University. Her husband, Clifton F. Sherrill, died in 1957.

preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Akers; one half sister, Minnie Jenkins; one
sister, Martha Moore; and her parents.She was a member of Eastside Church of Christ,
AARP Chapter 567, The Grand Society of Sycamores, Good Cheer Club, and Sight Loss
Support Group of the Wabash Valley. She was a former member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority

Beulah P. Figg Duffer, 88, of Terre Haute died at 7:16 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2008, at
Union Hospital. She was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Vigo County to John R. Gasaway and
Margaret Dishon Gasaway. She retired from Columbia Records. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Joseph A. Duffer, on Feb. 10, 2003; and by her first husband, James K.
Figg, on Nov. 3, 1981.Survivors include one son, Kenny Figg and wife Georgia of Terre
Haute; a daughter, Pat Wall and special son-in-law, who preceded in death, Frank Wall; a
sister, Juanita Gokey of Terre Haute; special niece, Margaret McCallister; seven
grandchildren, Mike Figg, Gary Figg, Marilyn Gilbert, Frank Wall II, Glenda Strassler, Mike
wall and Patti Rogers; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many
nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents.She was an avid
bowler, loved to play bingo, and loved her family.Services are 2 p.m. today at DeBaun
Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with the Rev. Aaron Wheaton officiating. Visitation

Wilson Jr., Derle L.   

Derle L. Wilson Jr., 71, of Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at his
residence. He was born Jan. 5, 1937 in Terre Haute, the son of Derle L. Wilson Sr. and
Ruth Katherine Bruning Wilson. He married Delia Rodriguez on June 9, 1975 and she
survives. Derle worked for the Alcan Corp. for 32 years. He loved gardening and flowers.
Survivors in addition to his wife include three sons, Derle Wilson III, Anthony Wilson and
wife Misty, and Joseph Wilson, all of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Megan, Dylan,
Kayleigh and Andrew Wilson, all of Terre Haute; a great-grandchild, Lucas Wilson; three
sisters, Dorothea Summers, Mary Noblitt, and Shirley Harvey and husband Jim all of Terre
Haute; and several nieces and nephews. His parents and two sisters, Margaret Morlan and
Martha Dayhuff preceded him. Services are 4 p.m. Friday at the Roselawn Funeral Home
with the Rev. Dan Willis officiating. Visitation will be 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.  
Moore, Alexis A.     

Alexis A. Moore, 19, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, in Methodist Hospital
from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Alexis was born April 14, 1989, in
Charleston, Ill., the daughter of Thomas and Lisa Luppens Moore. She was a college
freshman attending University of Southern Indiana, a 2007 graduate of South Vigo High
School, a camp counselor for Diabetes Youth Association, a member of D.E.C.A., and a
member of Chances for Youth. Survivors include her parents; brothers and sisters, James
P. Moore, Tiffany A. Moore, Joseph A. Moore and Tommy Moore, all of Terre Haute; her
fiancé, Logan Henry of Madison; paternal grandfather, Joseph Moore Jr. of Paris Ill.;
maternal grandfather, James Luppens of New York; aunts and uncles, Joanne Slater,
Raymond and Becky Moore, all of Paris, James and Lilianne Luppens, Margaret Terrible,
Ed Terrible, Tom and Desiree Aiello, Keith and Jennifer Luppens, all of New York; nephew,

Geneva Hastings, 95, of Terre Haute, passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008, in Royal
Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Sept. 7, 1912, in Terre Haute,
the daughter of Luther Cundiff and Ann Flynn Cundiff. She married Ivan Hastings and he
preceded her in death. Geneva was retired from Indiana State University. She was a
member of the Maplewood Christian Church and loved to cook.Survivors includes her son,
Douglas Hastings and wife Olga of Florida; a son-in-law, Ralph Atkins of Colorado;
grandchildren, Melody Jones and husband Rodney and Melinda Watson, all of Terre
Haute, Timothy Watson and wife Janice of Plainfield, Pamela Hensley of Terre Haute, Brian
Watson of Colorado, Amy Chenault and husband Danny of Terre Haute, and Robert
Hastings of Indianapolis; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two
daughters, Janet Watson and Patricia Atkins; a grandson, James Watson; two sisters; and

ROCKVILLE — Gary G. Lear of Rockville and formerly of Clinton died at 8:52 p.m.
Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was born Feb. 13, 1944, in
Clinton, to Conrad Walter Lear and Beatrice Newkirk Lear. He was a chemist for
International Paper in Terre Haute. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Rice Lear of
Rockville; two sisters, Marguerite Lear of Clinton and Mary Rendaci of Clinton; one sister-
in-law, Marlene and Dorwin Stevenson of Hillsdale; two nephews, Robert Rendaci and
George Sanquenetti; two nieces, Nancy McCracken and Elaine Sanquenetti; and several
great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia
Sanquenetti; and a brother, Leon William Lear. He was a member of Jerusalem No. 99 F
and AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine of Terre Haute, Order of
Eastern Star No. 254 Jerusalem Chapter, and Vermillion County Low Twelve.Services are

B. Virginia Fields, 83, of Terre Haute, died at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008, in
Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Oct. 23, 1924, in Vigo
County, the daughter of George Franklin Frazier and Martha Mattie Kennedy
Frazier.Survivors include her sons, Harry Wayne Fields and Janice of Terre Haute and
Thomas Edward Fields and Pam of Fort Wayne; daughters, Janice M. Pomelow and Craig
of Madison, Maine, Velora Kirby and Gary, and Debbie Fulk, all of Terre Haute, and
Martha Sanchez and Manny of San Antonio; one sister, Opal S. Green of Terre Haute; 19
grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents; her
first husband, Oris Loudermilk, who was killed during World War II; second husband, Harry
Fields, father of her children, who died December 1992; brothers, Luther Frazier, George
Cleo Frazier and Robert Frazier; sisters, Thelma Baker, Evelyn Grindle, Mae Earline
Ribbe, and Marie Van Hook; and daughter, Connie Joann Robison.She attended Fontanet
High School and graduated from Beauty College in the early 1940s. She was a member of
the First Baptist Church for 46 years, where she was in the Sanctuary Choir and Senior
Choir, Eagles Auxiliary 291, and Moose Auxiliary. She worked at the war plant in southern
Vigo County during World War II. She also was a waitress at the original Steak and Shake
in 12 Points, a waitress at Toasty Shop on South 7th Street, worked at CBS in Terre
Haute, and K-Mart in Indianapolis, retiring in the late 1980s and returning to Terre
Haute.Funeral services are 11 a.m. today in DeBaun Funeral Home, 85 E. Springhill Drive,
with the Revs. Bernie Jackson and Steve Newman officiating. Burial is in Roselawn

Margaret “Granny” Stowe, 94, of Terre Haute, passed away Friday, May 23, 2008, in her
home with her loving family by her side. She was born in Burnett, to Clay and Alma
Marquis Doty. She was a former employee of Quaker Maid, Miller Parrot, and Kresge 5
and 10 store.Survivors include her four daughters, Margie Stoffers, Sis Thomas and her
husband Rick, Judy Keyes and her husband Dale, and Nancy Stowe; 10 grandchildren,
Kim Piazza and husband Pete, Jeanie Keyes-Morris and husband Michael, Mike Stoffers

Cubs fan and Pacers fan. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, crocheting, and her collection of

Duncan, Raymond Joseph    

Raymond Joseph Duncan, 93, of Terre Haute died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Manorcare
Nursing Home in Chambersburg, Pa. He was born June 13, 1914, in Kentucky, the only
child of Robert James Duncan and Jonelle Duncan. He attended a one room school in
Kentucky, graduated from Dixie High School in Corydon, Ky., at the age of 15. He then
attended college in Bowling Green, Ky., for three years, working toward his goal of
becoming a lawyer. To support himself, he started out by selling door-to-door trinkets
which he purchased at a dime store. He enjoyed this so much that he decided that selling
was his dream, but that the real money was in real estate. He bought his first property
when he was in his 20s and stayed active in this business until into his 90s. He loved his
family, dancing, music, animals, travel, people, and was an avid checkers player. He is
survived by his loving children, Gayle Byerley and her husband Earl, Kathy Speers and
her husband Leonard, Jana M’Sahal, and Sherie Varin and her husband Edwin;
grandchildren, Lisa Roberts, William Bailey, Christopher, Tiffanie, and Heather Speers,
Summer, Zacharia, and Adam M’Sahal, Amber, Ashley, and Sabrina Agha; great-
grandchildren, Jorden, Justin, and Jaden Sisson, and Breanna Bailey; and great-great-
grandchildren, Aaliyah and Nevaeh Sisson. He was preceded in death by his parents; a
granddaughter, Bonnie Sisson; and a son-in-law, Ab M’Sahal. Services are 11 a.m.
Thursday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute, with Pastor
Jerry Nash officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m.
today, and 10 a.m. until services Thursday. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers,

Hamilton, Dorothy Mae   

Dorothy Mae Hamilton, 80, of Terre Haute died at 12:58 p.m. Tuesday May 27, 2008 in
Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born April 28, 1928 in Terre Haute to Orris Marvin
Goodman and Mae Ellen Timberman Goodman. She graduated from Glenn High School in
1946.She is survived by her husband, Alexander Warren Hamilton, whom she married
April 28, 1950; three sons, Robert Hamilton and wife Sandy of Brownsburg, Ind., David
Hamilton and wife Pamela of Terre Haute, and Bruce Hamilton of Greenwood, Ind.; four
grandchildren, Erik, Amy, Megan and Kelsey Hamilton; great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Roberta
Gallager and Carmen Grogan; and one brother, Marvin Goodman.She was a member of
the Centenary United Methodist Church in Terre Haute.Services are 1 p.m. Friday at
Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Homes 2425 Wabash Ave. with Pastor Paul Wagner officiating.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial

Burge, Zella K.    

Zella K. Burge, 97, of Terre Haute, died at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008 in Davis
Gardens Health Center. She was born Sept. 29, 1910 in Vigo County to Lloyd Pigg and
Laura Criss Pigg. She retired after 31 years of service with Dr. Sherb. Zella and was a
Meadowlark volunteer at the Meadows Manor North nursing home after her retirement.
She also had worked at Gillis Drug Store. Survivors include nieces, Barbara Cooprider,
Connie Vaught, and Paula Hayhurst; a nephew William “Billy” Pigg; and special cousins,
Warren and Lucy Pigg, and other nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in
death by her parents; two sisters, Edythe Smith and Velma Hall; two brothers, Merlin and
William Pigg; and her husband of 50 years, Theodore W. “Ted” Burge on Nov. 9, 1986;
and one son, Eugene. She was a member of Agape Church. Services are 2 p.m. Friday in
DeBaun Springhill Chapel with Dr. James Vaught officiating. Visitation will be noon until
service time Friday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. The

Hay, Verona    

Verona Hay, age 95, a lifelong member of Terre Haute, passed away early Wednesday
morning, May 28, 2008, in Meadows Manor East Nursing Home. She was born on Nov. 28,
1912, in Terre Haute, to John and Flora Zablo Urden. In 1932, she began working at
Columbia Enamel Company, where she worked for 42 years. She was a member of the
former St. Andrews Orthodox Church.In 1940, she married William J. Hay, who preceded
her in death in 1988. Verona was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters,
Virginia Urden, Lena Campbell, and Flora Buzash; and one brother, John Urden. Verona
is survived by nephews, Dr. David Hay and his wife Joy of Rosedale, and Michael Buzash
of Terre Haute. Other survivors include nieces, Florann Buzash White and her husband
Shannon of Goshen, Ind., Pam Webster and her husband Perry of Vero Beach, Fla., and
Linda Urden, of San Diego; several great-nieces and nephews; two loyal loving neighbors,
Dan and Pat Coffey, and many friends. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Thomas Funeral
Home, 2200 N. 13th Street, with Pastor Kevin Devine officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m. until
services Saturday in the funeral home. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park.  
Myers, Charles E. "Pete"    

Charles E. “Pete” Myers, 63, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday morning, May 28, 2008, in
his residence. He was born in Terre Haute, on Oct. 21, 1944, to Charles L. and Georgia
Dewey Myers. He retired as dairy manager from Kroger South and was currently a bus
driver for Vigo County School Corp. He was a graduate of the former Gerstmeyer
Technical High School in 1962, and a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in
Terre Haute.Survivors include his father of Terre Haute; two sisters, Goldie Kruger and
husband Braden of San Marcos, Texas and Charlena Jo Hall and husband Robert of
Paris, Ill.; one brother, David L. Myers and wife Debby of North Manchester; nieces and
nephews, Heather Barker and husband Ben, Victoria Myers, Chris Hall and wife Teale,
Ryan Hall and wife Suzanne, and Kimberly VanRyswyk and husband Jeff; a great-niece
and nephew, Corbin Barker and Bailee VanRyswyk.He was preceded in death by his
mother, on June 10, 2007.Graveside services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Roselawn Memorial
