Kelley, Jane    

Jane Kelley, known for her sharp wit and dry humor, died Monday Feb. 25, 2008, in Los
Angeles at the age of 90. Proud of her working career, she held supervisor positions with
Sunray DX Oil Company for 17 years, and Great Scot Super Markets, Terre Haute Brewing
Corporation, and the Social Security Office. Always willing to tackle a new challenge, she
moved to Las Vegas, London and Los Angeles. Even after she retired, she continued to work
as an administrator in the office of Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs. A native of
Terre Haute and graduate of Garfield High School, she volunteered her time to the Girls
Club, the Methodist Church, and the Library, which given her lifelong love affair with books
was not surprising. She was also an avid fan of her son’s teenage doo-wop group, the
Fascinators. Jane will remain in the hearts of her son, Don Kelley; her grandchildren, Kara
Kelley-Larsen, Brian Kelley, Sean Kelley and Lucy Gomez Kelley; and her great-
granddaughters, Katherine Panebianco, and Quinne Larsen. She is loved by her nephew,
Brad Martin and his sister Page; her nieces, Judy Ohmit and husband Phil and Karen “Suds”
Ferency; and her dear cousin, Mrs. Norma Lemmons. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Raymond “Hunk” Kelley, and her siblings, Margaret “Peg” Myers and Howdy Mayes,
all from Terre Haute. Graveside services are 3 p.m. Saturday at Roselawn Memorial Park
Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Thomas Funeral Home.  
Wilson, Virginia R.  

CLINTON — Virginia R. Wilson, 80, of Clinton, passed away early Saturday, March 1, 2008,
in her residence. She was born Aug. 2, 1927, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Effort Graham
and Eva May Brush Graham. She was a homemaker.Survivors include her three children,
Peggy Griffin-Johnson and Joann Lewis, both of Clinton, and Jerry R. Wilson of Montezuma;
11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Edna M. Darkis of Florida, Barbara
Delph of Bowling Green, Jackie L. Graham of Whitestown, and Vickie Ramsey of West Terre
Haute; one brother, Russell E. Graham of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Chester E. Wilson, on May 4,
1994.She was a member of the Blessed Assurance Baptist Church, Seelyville Conservation
Club and Half Century Auxiliary.Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Frist Funeral
Home, 458 Blackman St., with the Rev. Larry Peelman officiating. Burial is in Roselawn
Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.  
Dempsey, Louise Creasey   

Louise Creasey Dempsey, 100, of Terre Haute, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, in Davis Garden
Health Center. She was born July 31, 1907, to William F. Cummins and Laura E. Swickard, in
Terre Haute. She retired from the Vigo County Treasurer’s Office and also the Area Planning
in 1972.Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Ridens and her husband Bernard of Terre
Haute; two grandchildren, Susan Throckmorton and husband Gregg of Carmel and Kara
Holmes and husband Dan of Greencastle; and three great-grandchildren, Ashley Holmes,
Jarod Throckmorton, and Austin Throckmorton. She was preceded in death by her first
husband, Harry Creasey, in 1963; her second husband, Robert Dempsey, in 1979; and two
brothers, William E. Cummins and Joe Cummins.She had been a member of Prairieton United
Methodist Church, honored ladies of the Zorah Shrine, Christian Women’s Club, Elks Lodge
762 in Brazil, and the Association of Retired Public Employees of Indiana.Funeral services
are 11 a.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Funeral Home Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with
the Rev. Colleen Harden officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 9 to 11
a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.  
Matherly, M. Maxine    

M. Maxine Matherly, 88, of Terre Haute, died at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008, in Terre
Haute Regional Hospital. She was born on Nov. 25, 1919, in Vigo County, to Fred Spork and
Mildred McCoskey. She had retired from Kmart after 37 years of service.Survivors included
two daughters, Gwen Carson and her husband Butch of Terre Haute and Karen Colvin of
Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Mellissa Winn, Stacy Nguyen and her fiancé Steve
Schroeder; three great-grandchildren, Lindsey James, Brandon Winn, and Sydney Nguyen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ivan Matherly; one sister, Norma
Spork; and one son, Ron Matherly.She was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary
Post 972, Eagles Auxiliary Post 291Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in DeBaun
Funeral Home Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive. Burial is in Roselawn. Visitation is 5 to

Moss, Virginia Ross   

Virginia Ross Moss, 97, of Terre Haute, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Feb.
29, 2008, at Royal Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Aug. 19,
1910, in Terre Haute to William Carl Allen and Laura Armeda Cox Allen. She retired from
Miller-Parrott Bakery. Her husband, Earl Moss, died in January 1970. Survivors include a
daughter, Betty Jean Allen of Houston; best friend, Marva Jean Finley of Houston; and many
nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She also was preceded in death by her
parents, one sister, and two brothers.She was a lifelong member of Maple
Avenue/Maplewood Christian Church. She was baptized in 1919 at the old Maple Avenue
Christian Church. She was a joy to be around; she touched many lives with her positive
attitude on life and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.Services are 3 p.m. Thursday at
Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Craig Wininger
officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 1 p.m. until services Thursday.  
French, Dale Leslie    

LINTON — Miss Dale Leslie French, 62, of Linton, passed away Saturday, March 1, 2008, at
her residence. She was born in Terre Haute on Sept. 13, 1945, to Leslie Dale and Elizabeth
Jane Kivell French Wheat. Her biological father was killed in the war and she was raised by
her mother and adopted father, Bertham Wheat. She received her high school diploma from
Honey Creek High School in Terre Haute in 1963. She continued her education at Indiana
State University in Terre Haute, graduating in 1967, and did her student teaching at New
Albany High School the same year. She began teaching at Linton-Stockton High School in
1968 as the art teacher and remained at the helm of the Art Department for 39 years. She
assumed the role of art director for the school musical productions, as well as the school
historian until her retirement in 2007. She was a member of First United Methodist Church,
Linton-Stockton Classroom Association, was past president of Indiana State Teachers’
Association, member of National Education Association, Greene County Retired Teachers’
Association, Psi Iota Xi, was past president of Delta Kappa Gamma, was past president and
past secretary Greene County Art Council.Survivors include an aunt and uncle, JoAnn and
Robert King of Battle Creek, Mich.; aunt and uncle, Bob and Mary French; cousins, Jane
King, Bill French, and Daniel French, all of Michigan, and Jim French of Wyoming. She was
preceded in death by her parents; adopted father; and an uncle, Robert French.Friends may
call at Anderson-Poindexter Funeral Home, 89 C Street NW, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Wednesday, with the funeral service beginning at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Keith Long officiating.
Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute.  
Moore, Gregory Bland   

Gregory Bland Moore, 58, of Terre Haute passed away in his home Sunday afternoon, March
2, 2008. He was born Sept. 30, 1949, in California to Albert Bland Moore and Bessie Louise
Carter Moore. In earlier years he worked as a computer analyst at Columbia House. He was a
member of Sugar Creek Baptist Church. Greg loved fishing and being outdoors.Survivors
Nicholasville; a brother, Brad Moore and his wife Donna of Richmond, Va.; children, Scott
Moore of Farmersburg, Lori Mann and her husband Frankie of Terre Haute, Michelle Grant,
and Melinda Moore; grandchildren, Joseph and Lucas Mann, and Darion and Oshea; and
several nieces and nephews. Services are 11 a.m. Friday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500
N. Clinton St., with the Rev. Kevin Devine officiating. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will
follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.  
Power, Alberta Fae    

Alberta Fae Power of Terre Haute passed away on Tuesday March 4, 2008. She was born
Feb. 26, 1925, to Albert Quitt and Nettie Bradshaw in Louisiana, Mo. She worked as a
waitress at the former Terre Haute House, the Elks Club, and retired in 1992 from Club No.
70.She is survived by two daughters, Bobbie Abrams and husband Dennis of West Terre
Haute, and Sherry Lizdas and husband Ed of Cumming, Ga.; six grandchildren, Annie Mann
and husband Troy, Tim Abrams and wife Pamela, Denise Sallee and husband Tom, Michael
Lizdas and wife Cha’, Mark Lizdas and wife Johna, Jennifer Bufkin and husband Brad; 13
great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Mills, and one niece and nephew. She was
preceded in death by both parents; and one brother, Lloyd Mills. Services are 11 a.m.
Saturday in Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, with visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be
in Roselawn Cemetery.  
Marquis, Eugene D.   

Eugene D. Marquis, 87, of Terre Haute died at 5:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at
Meadows Manor North. He was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Terre Haute to John Marquis and
Christiana Stott. He worked 27 years as office manager in the aluminum business.Survivors
include his wife of 54 years, Marjorie L., Ward Marquis, whom he married April 25, 1953; one
son, Donald E. Marquis and wife Barbara; two daughters-in-law, Sharon Marquis and Lois
Anderson; a sister, Velma Newton; nine grandchildren, Merreadith Wiley, Dale Wiley, Joe
Gwinn, Donna Jean Taylor, Melissa Smith, Olivia Benthin, Aaron Wayne Wiley, Robert Terry
Marquis and Donald C. Marquis; six great-grandchildren, Travis, Timothy and Chelsea
Taylor, Ashley Smith, Cassie Benthin and Lex Benthin; a special nephew, Gerald Norris and
his wife Dolores; and several special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four
children, Wayne Wiley Marquis, Robert Terry Marquis, Sharon Gwinn and Karen Marquis;
two brothers, Billy Stott Marquis and John Marquis; two sisters, Pauline Long and Constance
McClain; and Sammy Sue, the black tomcat.He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He joined
the Civilian Conservation Corps, and later joined the Navy, served in the Armed Guard on a
tanker until transferred to the fleet. He served on the USS Webster, was a first class gunners
mate, serving in the Atlantic, Pacific and European African theatres, and was honorably
discharged in 1946. He was severely handicapped but never let it get him down. He was a
lifetime member of Krietenstein Post 104 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 972, and was a member of the Antique Car Club. His hobby was collecting and restoring
antique cars. He loved Crory Creek, the Newport Hill Climb, and loved to travel.Services are
1:30 p.m. Friday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 N. Lafayette Ave., with nephews Criss
and John Newton and the Rev. Larry Scott officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park,
with graveside services conducted by VFW Post 972. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. In honor
of Eugene, contributions may be made to VistaCare Hospice or the Humane Shelter.

Foltz, Kenneth    

CLINTON — Kenneth Foltz, 94, of Clinton, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008. He was the first
son born to Paul and Hazel Walther Foltz on July 20, 1913, and lived his entire life within a
mile of the home where he was born. He married Esther Frist on Oct. 6, 1935, and she
preceded him in death a year ago, on March 7, 2007.Survivors include his two daughters,
Carolyn Lowry and husband Montelle of Clinton and Peggy Hughes and husband Frank of
Rosedale; four brothers, Dale, Donald and wife Jean, and Max and wife Barbara, all of
Clinton, and Leon and wife Freda of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Kenneth Lowry and
Karen Beaugh of Columbus, Miss., Kelley Easby-Smith of Little Rock, Ark., Anne Doty of
Terre Haute, Heidi Skjordahl of Indianapolis, and Martin Skjordahl of Denver; 11 great-
grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife; a son, Ronald G. Foltz; a daughter, Sue Skjordahl; and a grandson, Robert A.
Hughes. Kenneth also was preceded in death by his only sister, Eleanor Foltz Murray.As a
youngster, Mr. Foltz was involved in 4-H and youth farm programs of the day. He was an
original director of the Soil Conservation effort of Vermillion County and was a member of
Farm Bureau all of his adult life. Kenneth was an organizer of and a charter member of
Wayside United Methodist Church, having always attended Methodist churches. He started
to school in a subscription school located in Sandytown and graduated from Clinton High
School with the class of 1931.Kenneth and Esther took into their home a young man from
Brazil, South America, Loureno Batzner, educating him through Clinton High School and
Indiana State University. He ultimately returned to Brazil, married and has two daughters.
Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Frist Funeral Home, 458 Blackman St., in
Clinton, with the Rev. Fred Cain officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is
4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to
Wayside United Methodist Church in memory of Mr. Foltz.  
Tryon, Victor V.  

ROSEDALE — Victor V. Tryon, 87, of Plainfield, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
He was born Feb. 6, 1921, to Dave and Alphie Gibbs Tryon in Rosedale. He retired as a
conductor from Conrail in 1980, after working there for over 35 years.Victor is survived by
two stepsons, Clifford and Robert Banta; a stepdaughter, Melinda Guthrie; six
stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Meier
Tryon, who passed away Feb. 27, 2008; three brothers; and six sisters.He was a veteran of
World War II having served in the U.S. Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines. He was a
member of the masonic lodge.Graveside chapel services 11 a.m. Tuesday in Roselawn
Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday in Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home
in Plainfield.  
Loyd, Rebecca Jo   

BRAZIL — Rebecca Jo Loyd joined her Heavenly Father at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday March 5,
2008. She battled a long and devastating illness with hope, faith and her love for others. She
was born Jan. 21, 1958, the daughter of L. Jonathan “Jack” Loyd Jr. and Ramona Russell
Loyd. She graduated from Brazil High School, class of 1976. She attended Indiana State
University for two years. She worked as a security officer for Pinkerton, later known as
Securitas. Survivors include her daughter, Brittney Mueller; son, Joshua Mueller and her
cherished grandson, Ashtin Bullerdick; her mother; stepsister, Claudia Murphy and husband
Terry of Riley; stepbrother, Kelly Murphy of Sevierville, Tenn.; and many close friends and
relatives. Her father, and stepfather, Bill Murphy, preceded her in death. She was a member
of the First Presbyterian Church, attending services even through the many trials of her
illness. She loved listening to the music and the fellowship with friends. A memorial service
will be 2 p.m. Saturday at French Funeral Home with Gary Scroggins officiating. Visitation will
be 1 to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the
Clay County Humane Shelter, 8280 N. Co. Rd. 125 W, Brazil, IN 47834. Her ashes will be
interred at Roselawn Memorial Park.  
Niece, Lucille    

Lucille Niece, 81, of Terre Haute died at 7:18 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Union Hospital.
She was born Feb. 10, 1927, to Willis Cooper and Beulah McFadden Cooper.Survivors
include one son, James George; four daughters, Valerie Stapleton, Sandra George, Debbie
Bullock and Brenda Niece; one brother, Eugene Cooper; 13 grandchildren; 18
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at
Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 N. Lafayette Ave., with the Rev. Ray Leach officiating.
Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visittion is 11 a.m. until services Wednesday.  
Presser, Jack G.    

Jack G. Presser, 82, of Terre Haute, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008, in his residence.
He was born April 19, 1925, in Terre Haute to Harry G. Presser and Frances Waldon
Presser. He was a carpenter and a musician. He played guitar for many fine area
establishments. He married Millie Russell and she preceded him in death Dec. 28, 2004.
They were married 43 years. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy for
three-and-a-half years, including an assignment as a gyro technician in the South Pacific.
He is a life-time member of American Legion Post 104. He was a former member of Disabled
American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Free and Accepted Masons.Survivors
include a son, Richard H. Presser and wife Ester of Las Vegas, Nev.; a granddaughter, Holly
was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Edith Carman and Mona Murphy; and
three brothers, Faye, Lloyd and Ray. At his request there are no services scheduled.
Entombment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Roselawn Funeral Home assisted with
arrangements.  
Webster, Sally Ann   

Sally Ann Webster, 66, of East Glenn, formerly of Terre Haute, died Monday, March 3,
2008, after a long battle with emphysema. She was born July 28, 1941, in Bethlehem, Pa., to
Martin and Winifred Roberts Menser. She attended Woodrow Wilson Junior High School and
Wiley High School. She loved the mountains, dancing, music, sewing, reading and spending
time with her grandson, Justin.Prior to retiring from CVS Drug Store in 2003, she was
employed at Meis Department Store, and was a dance instructor for Florence Cizek
Studio.Survivors include longtime companion Gene Brunner; two daughters, Pam Webster,
and Mindy Lewellyn and husband John; one grandson, Justin Nicoson; two sisters, Betty
Campbell and husband Vern, and Nancy Felts; one sister-in-law, Joan Burris and husband
Mike; several nieces and nephews; and special friend and former husband, Jim Webster.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Steve Menser; stepfather, Harold Beck;
brother-in-law, Johnny Webster; and niece, Kim Ann Burris.All who knew and loved Sally will
miss her beautiful smile and great sense of humor.Services are 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at
Thomas Funeral Home, 2200 N. 13th St. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park at a later date.
Visitation is 3 p.m. until services Wednesday.  
McCloud, Donald Robert    
Donald Robert McCloud passed away in his residence in Guyton, Ga., on March 10, 2008,
with his family. He was a native of Terre Haute. He is preceded in death by his wife of 50
years, Wanda McCloud; his father and mother, Lester and Emma McCloud, three sisters,
Catherine Williams, Mary Smith, and Margret Allsup; a brother, Jack McCloud; two
grandchildren, Tony McCloud and Rhonda McCloud; two nephews, Donnie Williams and
Bobby Smith; life long friends, Bill Booker and his wife Joann, and John Schoemaker.He is
survived by four sons, Larry McCloud of Guyton, David McCloud, Danny McCloud and wife
Sis, all of Terre Haute, and Darrell McCloud and wife Cathy of Stauton; three daughters,
Nancy Reid and husband Frank, and Linda McCloud, all of Guyton, and Crystal Taylor of
Springfield, Ga.; two sons-in-law, Chris Taylor and Mike Pittman; several grandchildren and
great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and friends. He was a big part of all of their
lives.He was and is “loved” dearly. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1952, and loved
to travel. He was in the construction trade. He also traveled with the fair. He was “always” out
to make others happy; always playing jokes. He loved NASCAR, especially Jeff Gordon,
number 24. He was a wonderful father who had a close relationship with each and everyone
of his kids. A father who left more meaning to love, to have gatherings, kickback, have a
beer and a big feast. Not only a father, but also a best friend.“If my parting has left a void
then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, ah yes, these things I
too will miss!” We love and will miss you Dad! We know you will be happy. Have a great

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Donald W. Miller Jr., 54, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 7:
50 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2008, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute, following an extended
illness. He was born Jan. 22, 1954, in Berwyn, Ill., the son of Donald W. Miller Sr. and Doyne
Creasey Miller. He was formerly a plasterer.Survivors include his mother of Dennison, Ill.; a
sister, Janet Ramey of Dennison; two brothers, Charles Andrew Miller and Scott Alan Miller,
both of Marshall, Ill.; a son, Jesse Miller of Paris, Ill.; a daughter, Amy Dawn Kent of
Morrisonville, Ill., two grandchildren; and his fiancee’, Shirley Brosman of West Terre Haute.
He was a graduate of Marshall High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.Public graveside
services are 12 noon Monday at Roselawn Cemetery, 7500 N. Clinton Street, in Terre
Haute, with Henry Phillips officiating. Visitation will be private. Pearce Funeral Home of

Wiseman, Gladys E.   

FARMERSBURG — Gladys E. Wiseman, 83, of Farmersburg, formerly of Terre Haute, died
at 4:30 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2008, in her residence surrounded by her family. She was
born Nov. 25, 1924, in Pana, Ill., to Elsworth Bechtel and Glapha Sietz Bechtel. She retired
from Terre Haute Air National Guard in 1978.She is survived by one son, Charles “Bob”
Howard and his wife Judy of Clinton; two daughters, Darla Howlett and and her husband Don
of Crawsfordsville, and Lee Ann Nickless and her husband Steve of Farmersburg; six
grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Inez
Rankin of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her
husband of 52 years, Robert Wiseman; her parents; and two brothers.She was a member of
the First Prairie Creek Baptist Church.Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill
Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with the Rev. Ray Dyer officiating. Burial is in Roselawn
Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.  
Nasser Sr., Robert E.   

Robert E. Nasser Sr., 76, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2008, after a brief
illness, with his family at his side. A Christmas present to Skander Nasser Sr. and Hazel
Laham Nasser, he (and his twin sister) was born Dec. 25, 1931. Bob married the love of his
life, Joan Mareena Nasser, on May 2, 1954, and she survives. Also surviving are his son,
Robert E. Nasser Jr. of Terre Haute; two daughters, Karen Ann Uhlhorn and her husband,
Scott of Bloomington, and Nancy Jean Hawkins and her husband Kenny of Bedford; three
grandchildren, Anna Kay Uhlhorn, David Scott Uhlhorn, and Joanie Ann Hawkins; his
brother, Skander Nasser Jr. and his wife Helen of Terre Haute; his twin sister, Betty Nasser
Slyby and her husband William Slyby Sr. of Fort Wayne; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Mareena
Kassis and Loretta Mareena Nasser and her husband, the Reverend Father John Khoury
Nasser; brother-in-law, Michael Mareena; nieces and nephews, Candace Nasser, Skander

and several aunts and uncles.After graduating from Terre Haute Wiley High School in 1949,
Bob was drafted into the U.S. Marines and served his country from 1951 to 1953. After
returning from service, Bob and his brother, Skander owned and operated Fi-Blak, an
insulation and roofing supply company in Terre Haute. They also owned and operated
Bargain Discount in Terre Haute. For the past 40 years or so, Bob worked in automobile
sales, having worked for Adam’s Pontiac and K.C. Summers Buick prior to opening Bob
Nasser Used Cars at 13th and Poplar Streets about 28 years ago, where he became known
as “Big Hearted Bob” in the car business. Bob’s hobby was his work and his entire life was
devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren.Funeral services are 11 a.m. today at
Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home, 602 S. Seventh St., in Terre Haute, with the Rev. Joseph
Chillington III and the Rev. Father John Nasser officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services

Roy L. Burgess, 85, of Terre Haute, died at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008, in Union
Hospital. He was born March 2, 1923, in Gibson County, to Jacob Burgess and Della Ray
Fletcher Burgess. He retired after 27 years at Columbia Records in maintenance. He was
co-founder and president of Burgess Marine.Survivors include his wife, Naomi Stout
Burgess; sons, Gary Burgess and wife Cheryl of Terre Haute, Jerry Burgess and wife
Connie of Indianapolis, Barry Burgess and wife Marilyn of Port Richey, Fla., and Richard

husband Paul, all of Indianapolis, Debbie Sudderth and husband Don of Valdessa, N.C.,
and Terri Tripp of Cable, Ohio; 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one
stepdaughter, Cheryl L. Gates and husband Jeffery; and one stepson, Michael A. England
and wife Cathy.He was preceded in death by a wife, Judith Burgess; his parents; son, Larry

John E. Mattox Jr., 55, of Terre Haute, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, in his residence. He
was born April 13, 1952, in Terre Haute, to John E. Mattox and Nellie F. Skipo Mattox. John
was a tool and die maker and group leader at Prox Company where he has been employed
since 1979. Survivors include his sisters, Lois Ann Bronnert and her husband Ronald of
Terre Haute and Linda Thomas and her husband Kenneth of Evansville; an uncle, Kenneth
Mattox of Brazil; nieces and nephews, Lori Hall and her husband Randy of Cincinnati, Krista
Bauer and her husband Karl of Florence, Ky., Andrew Thomas of Nashville, Tenn., and
Gregory Thomas of Indianapolis; one great-niece; three great-nephews; and his cat,
Sammie. John was a member of GMP Local 127 and the Nature Conservancy. He was an
avid outdoorsman. His love for nature and his extensive knowledge of botany led to his
involvement with the restoration of his family property back to the original wildflowers and
plants of that area. John was a master craftsman of wood and metal. He was ready and
willing to help his family and friends with anything at a moments notice. He will be sadly
missed by everyone who knew him. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Callahan and

FARMERSBURG — Robert A. Siner 82, of Farmersburg and formerly of Zephyrhills, Fla.,
and Terre Haute, died Sunday, March 16, 2008. He was born Dec. 26, 1925, in Vigo
County, to John L. and Rosa May Trimmer Siner. He was preceded in death by his wife of
36 years, Winnifred Mayfield Siner. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara June Siner-
Bates of Danville, Ind.; two sisters, Shirley Ingram and husband John of Harker Heights,
Texas, and Rosetta Newton and husband Dale of West Terre Haute; one brother, Donald
Siner and his wife Lulabelle of West Terre Haute; one sister-in-law, Judy Siner of
Farmersburg; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his
parents; a son, Steve Allen Siner; and two brothers, John Edward Siner and Danny Joe
Siner. He graduated from Pimento High School in 1944, and served in the European
Theatre during World War II, from August 1944 until June 1946. He was a retired sheet
metal worker, a member and past master of Pimento Lodge 292 Free and Accepted
Masons, a member of Pimento Order of Eastern Star Chapter 516, Scottish Rite, Zorah
Shrine, Sheet Metal Workers Local 20, and Riley American Legion Post 328. While living in
Florida he attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Wesley Chapel. Before going into
Millers Merry Manor for rehabilitation he attended and became a member of Farmersburg
United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at DeBaun Springhill
Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, in Terre Haute, with the Revs. Gerald Denny and Don

Fred A. Salmon, 82, of Terre Haute died Monday, March 17, 2008, at Union Hospital. He
was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Vigo County to Claude C. Salmon and Minnie Schulte Salmon. He
was a retired terminal operator for Eastern Express, and a retired farmer. He was preceded
in death by his wife, Sue Ann House Salmon, who passed away in 1998. Survivors include
his daughters, Jayne Sanftleben and her husband Hank, and Betsy Voigt and her husband
Eric; twin sister, Elizabeth Lewis; grandchildren, Karl Sanftleben, Gretchen Sanftleben,
Rose Voigt, and Jay Voigt; sisters-in-law, Margaret Salmon, Virginia Salmon, and Nancy
Rubey and her husband Fred; and brother-in-law, John House and his wife Barbara. He
was a member of the Country Club of Terre Haute, Rocky Fork Lake Association, Classic
Car Club, and the American Legion. He also was a member of Social Lodge 86 Free and
Accepted Masons and Zorah Shrine. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and a 1943 graduate of

Anne Rice, 91, of Terre Haute, died Friday, March 14, 2008, in her residence. She was
born April 11, 1916, in Byesville, Ohio, to Thomas S. Kerr and Ruby Armstrong Kerr. Anne
was a retired supervisor for Reuben H. Donnelley. Survivors include her son, Richard W.
Rice and his wife Judi of Albuquerque, N.M.; grandchildren, Kevin Rice and his wife Ginger,
Brad Rice and his wife Jessica, and Eric Rice and his wife Jini; great-grandchildren,
Samantha, Kyle, Cody, Carson, Aubrey, Ceri, Greyson, and Marin; and her “special
daughter,” Jo Murphy of Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer B.
Rice in 1985; two brothers, Robert and John Kerr; and her sister, Mary Jane Starkloff. Anne
was a member of United Methodist Temple and was very active in local and district
Methodist Church activities. She was a member of Twelve Points Chapter 528 Order of
Eastern Star, White Shrine, and Telephone Pioneers of America. The family would like to
thank Hospice of the Wabash Valley, for their kind care as well as those friends who were
very helpful and kind, giving her the love and care that she needed. Services are 10 a.m.

Peggy Darlene Jaeger Stedman, 53, of Terre Haute, went home to be with the Lord on
Wednesday, March 19, 2008; with her family by her side. She was born Dec. 12, 1954, in
Terre Haute. She was a graduate of Terre Haute North Vigo High School. She is survived
by her husband Virgil; two young sons, Ryan and Mark; her mother, Margaret F. Jaeger;
two brothers, Jack E. Jaeger Jr. and his wife Pamela, and Terry W. Jaeger; her sister
Jeanette Snyder and her husband Larry, and a large extended family. She was preceded in
death by her father, Jack E. Jaeger Sr.; and an infant brother, Stephen. She was an active
member of Spring Creek Community Church and a member of the Wabash Valley Ladies
Unity Vision Team. Her three-year battle with cancer leaves a lasting impression of her faith
and courage, as well as her love for her two sons. The reward for her faith is now realized
as she dances on the streets of Heaven with her Lord and Savior. She will be sadly missed
and lovingly remembered. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at the Spring Creek Community
Church with Pastor Gary Blackburn officiating. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.

Josephine Rosetta Starkey, 89, formerly of Terre Haute, and a 56-year resident of Indiana,
died Thursday, March 20, 2008, in a nursing home in Suffolk, Va. She had lived in
Portsmouth, Va., for the past two years to be near her daughter. Survivors include her
daughter, Barbara Speight and husband Don of Suffolk; four grandchildren, Jim Eisman of
Tallahassee, Fla., Ann Smith of Asheville, N.C., Mary Shaffer Speight of Suffolk, and Leslie
Morris of Nebraska; and six great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her
husband of 48 years, Dallas O. Starkey; a daughter, Sue Ellen Morris; and two sisters,
Victorrene Montgomery and Mildred Harden.Mrs. Starkey was a native of Terre Haute and a
member of Trinity United Methodist Church.Funeral services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in DeBaun

Mary R. Wilson, of Terre Haute, passed away late Friday night, March 21, 2008, in the
comfort of her own home while surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on May 17,
1932, in West Terre Haute, to Roland James Moss (Ted) and Helen Piker Moss. She retired
after more than 30 years with Great Scot Supermarket at 11th and Locust. Survivors
include her seven children, Jackie Sue DeVanis and fiancé Ron, Helen Lively and husband
Steve, Ronnie LaFleur and wife Kathy, Melody Stein and husband John, Elizabeth and
husband Greg, Billy LaFleur and wife Shannon, and James P. Wilson; stepchildren, Jan But
and husband Troy, and Scott Wilson; 27 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; a brother,
Jack Moss and wife Carol of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and two nieces.She was preceded in death
by her parents; her husband, Pat Wilson, who passed away on Jan. 16, 2003; sister, Debra
Ann Moss; grandson, Collyn David Thurston; stepgranddaughter, Trish Anderson; and
stepgrandson, Brian Myers.Mary loved collecting porcelain baby dolls, and enjoyed nothing
more than spending time with her family. She was a loving mother, who always put her

Mary J. Brodhacker, 87, of Bloomington, Ind., and formerly of Terre Haute, died Saturday
morning, March 22, 2008, in Bloomington Hospital. She had worked as a laboratory
technician for Commercial Solvents Corporation. She was born Feb. 10, 1921, in Terre
Haute, to James Moore and Sylvia Neal Moore. Survivors include her husband of 57 years,
Rynder and her husband Jerry of Evansville and Linda Bly and her husband Larry of North
Ridgeville, Ohio; a sister, Norma Coffin and her husband Jack of Logansport; five
Ridgeville, Ohio; a sister, Norma Coffin and her husband Jack of Logansport; five
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces
and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James Moore; and
two sisters, Julie Alexander and Jean Godfrey.Mary was a graduate of Terre Haute Wiley
High School. During the 1960s and 1970s, she lived in Euclid, Ohio, and while there she
was a Red Cross Volunteer. She also received a 50-year award from Ohio Order of

James G. Archer, 77, of Terre Haute died at 5 p.m., Saturday, March 22, 2008, in his
residence. He was born April 25, 1930, in Terre Haute to James Madison Archer and Lillian
Gertrude Woods. He retired from Painters Local 197. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Ollie Archer.Survivors include six sons, Mike Ensminger, Jimmy Archer, Jerry Archer, Bucky
Archer, Denny Archer and Mickey Archer; three daughters, Debbie Clark, Denita Pegg and
Lori Archer; one brother, Fred Archer; a sister, Delores Haase; 28 grandchildren; and
several great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and three
sons, Billy Lee Archer, Freddie Joe Archer and David Archer. He loved to hunt and fish,
loved the great outdoors and the river. He was fun-loving and had many friends.Services

Margaret E. Webster Edwards, 87, of Terre Haute died at 10:50 p.m., Saturday, March 22,
2008. She was born June 19, 1920, in Terre Haute to Willard Webster and Lula Selber
Webster. She retired from Rueben H. Donnelley. Her husband, Warren A. Edwards Sr.,
preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 1994.Survivors include two sons, David L. Edwards,
and Warren A. “Gig” Edwards Jr. and his wife Nancy; grandchildren, Kevin Edwards, Davey
Edwards, Pat Edwards, Davetta Edwards, and Shannon Edwards; and four great-
grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth, Dale, Kermit
and Otto Webster. She was a member of First Prairie Creek Baptist Church and American

Nettie Hart, 92, of Terre Haute passed away early Sunday morning, March 23, 2008, at
Union Hospital. She was born June 29, 1915, in Vigo County to Alga Edmonson and
Daphne Willigman Edmonson. She retired from Quaker Maid in 1977. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Laras Hart, in 1967.Survivors include three daughters, Betty Helt of
Terre Haute, Lena Malcom of Hobart, and Lela Darkis and her husband Herman of Lake
Station; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson; two great-grandchildren;
one sister; five brothers; and two sons-in-law. Nettie loved playing cards, crafts, and was a
member of the Grandmothers’ Club in earlier years. Services are 1 p.m. today at Thomas

Virginia M. Felling, 89, of Terre Haute died Monday, March 24, 2008, in Royal Oaks Health
Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Nov. 29, 1918, in Terre Haute to Albert and
Bertha Newton. Virginia retired as a secretary from Public Service Indiana, after 41 years
of service. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, William C. Felling, who
passed away in 2006; her parents; and a brother, John R. Newton. She graduated from
Glenn High School in 1937, and attended Brown’s Business College. She was a member of
Kerman Cauldron 19, and Badoura Temple 23 Daughters of the Nile, and was a former
member of the National Secretary’s Association. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday, in

Elizabeth Brogan Ury, 92, of Terre Haute died at 5:25 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008,
in Union Hospital. She was born June 12, 1915, in Clinton, Ind., to James McCormick and
Margaret Foley McCormick. She was a retired waitress from the Eastwood Club. Survivors
include her husband of 67 years, Jack Julian Ury; four daughters, Margaret Calvin and
Patty Harrold, both of Terre Haute, Christine Distel and husband Sonny of Batavia, Ill., and
Debbie Mahalek Sedletzeck and husband Tom of Terre Haute; one sister, Helen Mancuso
and husband Tom of Terre Haute; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; one great-
great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two
brothers, Joseph and David McCormick. She was a member of St. Benedict Church and
Sacred Heart Church. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Patrick Catholic

Eugena Kaye “Gena” Hamm Watson, 63, of Sandford, passed away Saturday, March 22,
2008, in her parents’ residence in Sandford. She was born Sept. 21, 1944, in Greencastle,
the firstborn child of Eugene W. Hamm and Wilma K. Stone Hamm.Survivors include her
parents; her siblings, Larry E. Hamm, Rebecca E. Hamm, Joyce Warner-Stone, Ronald P.
Hamm, Stanley R. Hamm, and Les K. Hamm and his wife, Carla; special friends, Nancy
Dyer and Marcia Patrick. She was also the beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two nephews. She loved and was loved by her former
husband, Richard Watson. She was a lover of animals and flowers. Services were

Grace S. Callahan, 86, of Terre Haute died at 2 p.m. Sunday March 23, 2008, in
Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Dec. 8, 1923, in Clay County,
Ind., to David Fritz and Mae Lash. She retired from real estate sales for Pfister, had also
worked at Davis Park Elementary and South Vigo High School, and was a Lifeline listener.
Survivors include her daughter, Colleen Walsh of Oak Park, Calif.; son, Larry E. Callahan
of Dallas; three grandchildren, Tracy Dimino, Jordan and Taylor Callahan; two
great-grandchildren, Dallas and Chase Dimino; half-brother, Jack Whittington of Brazil;
sister-in-law, Joanne Fritz and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by
both parents; her husband Lawrence E. Callahan, and brother, Ivan Fritz. Funeral services

Velma Dean Claybaugh, 73, of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2008, at
Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born Dec. 2, 1934, in Shelburn, to Victor Poff and
Juanita Shounk Poff. She had worked at Culligan Water, Litzinger Special School and 1st
Bank of California. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Claybaugh, whom she married
April 23, 1954; a daughter, Debra Claybaugh and her husband Hugh Connell of Festus,
Mo.; a twin sister, Thelma Jean Deal and her companion Frank Camp of Rockville; a
brother, Frederick Jesse Poff and wife Alice of Vincennes; and two grandchildren, Adam
and Jessica Carroll, both of Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents; a
daughter, Diane Jean Claybaugh; and two brothers, Victor Poff Sr., and Paul Edward Poff.
Youngblood, Ferrel Ray    

Ferrel Ray Youngblood, 70, of Terre Haute, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2008, in
Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born April 23, 1937, in Center Point to Harvey
Youngblood and Mildred Lasalle Youngblood. Ferrel was a retired pipe fitter for Local 157
with 40 plus years of service.Survivors include his wife, E. Jane Youngblood; son, Rob
Youngblood and his wife Jenee of Indianapolis; grandson, Evan Ferrel Youngblood;
brothers, Owen Youngblood and Doyne Youngblood, both of Center Point; and a sister,
Moyne Brown of Terre Haute. Ferrel was preceded in death by his parents; brother,
Melvin Youngblood; and a sister, Carol Youngblood. Ferrel was a past exalted ruler and
secretary of Rockville Elks Lodge 2471, a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local
157, where he was the past financial secretary treasurer for the Benefit Club and was
currently serving as president of the Retirees Group. He also was a member of Moose
Lodge and worked at Paitson Hardware and Indiana State University after
retirement.Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2008, in
Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with the Rev. Bonnie Quandt
officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled 4 to 8 p.m.
today, March 30, 2008, with memorial services by the Rockville Elks Lodge 2471 at 7 p.m.  
Cecil, James L.    

James L. Cecil, 77, of Terre Haute, passed away early Thursday morning, March 27,
Cecil. He retired from Wabash Fibre Box. In earlier years, he and his wife, Alice owned
Cecil's Grocery in Fontanet.Survivors include two daughters, Diana S. Rudisel and her
husband Paul W. of Carrollton, Ga., and Peggy A. Easton of North Terre Haute; one son,
John W. Cecil and his wife Bonita of Dade City, Fla.; one sister, Judy Roberts and her
husband Eddy of Lafayette; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.James was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice on June 1, 2007; and a sister, Vicki
Harris.He went to Lange, McClain and then to Gerstmeyer High School.Visitation is 11
services are 1 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Larry Lilly officiating. Entombment will
follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.  
Snowden, Mary Anne  

Mary Anne Snowden, 65, of Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008, in
Union Hospital. She was born on Nov. 3, 1942, in Terre Haute to Leo F. Crowder and Fern
Stubbs Crowder. She worked at M A B Paints for 27 years, and also worked at Lowe's
Home Improvement as an interior decorator for some time. Survivors include her
daughter, Sara Shephard and her companion John Minger of Clinton; grandchildren,
Jessica Layton and her companion Chris Desabrais, John Michael Fugate, Alexis Lewis,
and Dalton Owen; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Nicole and Christopher Desabrais; her
former husband, John Snowden Jr. of Terre Haute; stepmother, Pauline Selby of
Indianapolis; and a son-in-law, Ty Smith.She was preceded in death by her parents; her
first husband, Jim Hinds; and a daughter, Elizabeth Smith.She was a member of Northside
Community Church.Cremation has been chosen. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in
Northside Community Church. Memorial services are 1 p.m. in the church with Pastor
Frank officiating. Roselawn Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Stevenson and his wife Tracie of Terre Haute, and Wade and Clyde Stevenson; Sadie
Miller Stevenson Peoples, 75, of Terre Haute, passed away early morning Friday,
grandchildren, Doug Lyons and wife April, Ron Quintaine Jr., Kyle, Cory, and Cara
Huckaby, and Greg and Kelly Stevenson; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Amber
Quintaine, Emilee Stevenson, and Sonya, Josh and Alyssa Poston; and one sister Mary
White.She was preceded in death by her parents; and two grandsons, Derek and Ryan
Quintaine.Sadie loved playing bunco, rummy and euchre. She loved her grandchildren,
sewing and spending time with her friends at Peddle Park. She was an officer of the
Eagles in Terre Haute.Services are 11 a.m. Monday in Thomas Funeral Home, 2200 N.
13th Street, with Pastor Kevin Devine officiating. Entombment is in Roselawn Memorial
Park. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.
