Stewart, Mary Ruth    

Mary Ruth Stewart, 88, of Terre Haute, died Friday, May 30, 2008, in the family home. She
was the daughter of Harry and Helena Ward. She was the widow of Howard Stewart.She is
survived by her daughter, Joann Stewart. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Roselyn
Ward and Margaret Utz.There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m.
Tuesday in St. Patrick’s Church with Father Rick Ginther officiating. Burial is in Roselawn
Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the American
Heart Association. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., is in charge of
arrangements.  
Soyack, Mafalda    

UNIVERSAL — Mafalda Soyack, 93, of Universal, died at 11:14 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, in
Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She was born on April 28, 1915, in Blockton, Ala., the
daughter of Massimo Muciarelli and Linda Carpani Muciarelli. She had worked at St. Anthony
Hospital and retired from Terre Haute Regional Hospital.Survivors include a son, Paul Soyack
Jr., and a daughter, Anna Marie Soyack, both of Universal; several nieces; one nephew; and
one sister-in-law, Helen Soyack of Clinton.She was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband, Paul Soyack, in 1967; her infant son, Massimo Soyack; four brothers, Julio,
Pasquale, Dan and John “Bello” Muciarelli; and two sisters, Yolanda Corrado and Marie
Muciarelli.She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Universal, and St. Joseph’s Altar Society.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Karanovich-Giovanini Funeral Home, 408 Vine St.,
in Clinton, with Father Joseph Villa officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation
is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.  
Byrley, Alice Marie    

Alice Marie Byrley, 87, of Mitchell, formerly of Terre Haute, passed away at 3:25 p.m.
Thursday, May 29, 2008, in Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford. She was born June 17, 1920,
in Terre Haute, the daughter of Albert Smedler and Bonnie Webster Smedler. She married
Paul E. Byrley on Dec. 25, 1940, and he preceded her in death in 1997. She had been
employed at Schutlz Department Store in Terre Haute as an accountant, and was a member
of the McDoel Baptist Church in Bloomington.Survivors included her daughters, Carolyn S.
Robertson and her husband Butch of Bedford and Alice Ann Blocksom and her husband Rick
of Mitchell; grandchildren, Nikki Stinson and her husband Joe, Kristal Adamson and Jeremy
Robertson and his wife Heather; and great-grandchildren, Makaylee Robertson and Kelsey
Marie Frye.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brother, Albert
Wayne Smedler Jr.Funeral services are noon Tuesday in Roselawn Memorial Park
Mausoleum in Terre Haute with the Rev. Keith Taylor officiating. Entombment will follow.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until services. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m.

Lewsader, Helen M.   

Helen M. Lewsader, died Sunday, June 1, 2008, in Terre Haute. She was born Nov. 17, 1916,
in Clay County, to Arthur and Clara Fatch Long. Survivors include her daughter, Jean (and
John) Penry; sister, Bonnie Harlow of Parkersburg, W.Va.; nieces and nephews; and special
members of the Yoho and Bough families. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56
years, Gilbert; and brothers, Burl and Paul Long.She graduated from Pimento High School
and Wabash Brown’s Business College. She retired as a secretary at the Indiana State
University Laboratory School. She gave piano lessons, played the piano for the Woman’s
Department Club Nota Belles and the organist at Barbour Avenue Methodist Church for 63
years.Per her request, there will be no services. DeBaun Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.  
Thompson, George William    

George William Thompson, 78, of Terre Haute, died Monday, June 2, 2008, in his Wyndmoor
Retirement Community, after a three-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) during
which time he inspired many people with his courage and positive attitude. He was born July
31, 1929, in Martinsville, Ill., to David C. Thompson and Aileen Arney Thompson. George
was a retired principal at Davis Park Elementary School. He previously was a principal at
Sandison Elementary School and a sixth grade teacher at Thornton Elementary School.
Survivors include a son, Steven Thompson and his wife Diane of Jacksonville, Fla.; one
daughter, Stacey Dorman and her husband Jay of Terre Haute; a brother, Bobby Thompson
of Crestwood, Ky.; and three grandchildren, Shannon Thompson and her fiancee Timothy
Coughlin of Tallahassee, Fla., Ashley Thompson of Jacksonville, and Christian Kirby of Terre
Haute. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Thompson, who passed away June 13,
2005.George attended Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church and was an U.S. Army veteran
of the Korean War. He was a member of Wabash Valley Special Interest Car Club, Retired
Teachers Association, Terre Haute Lodge 19 Free and Accepted Masons, and Scottish Rite
Valley of Terre Haute. The family would like to thank Comfort Keepers, Meadows Home
Healthcare, Hospice of the Wabash Valley, and the staff at Wyndmoor Retirement
Community for their kindness and care.Funeral Services are 10 a.m. Friday in Sugar Grove
Free Methodist Church, 3201 McKeen, with the Rev.Monte Vincent officiating. Burial is in
Roselawn Memorial Park with military services by Veterans of Foreign Wars 972. Visitation is
4 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the church with Masonic Memorial services at 6:30 p.m.

Cottrell, Maxene Van Lear    

Maxene Van Lear Cottrell, 93, of Terre Haute, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Saturday, May 31,
2008. She was born Nov. 18, 1914, in Montezuma, to Samuel Fletcher Van Lear, a farmer
and blacksmith from Rockville and her mother was Isa Estella Townsley Van Lear, a school
teacher from Covington. She was the youngest of five children. She had an idealistic, happy
childhood growing up in the country on the family farm near Rockville/Nyesville area. In 1931,
she married William Herschel Cottrell, a farmer from Sandcut. They lived on the family farm
located on the Rosedale “pavement” between Sandcut and Rosedale.Maxene and Herschel
had four children, William “Ralph”, Jess Robert, Betty Jane Cottrell Erdle and Norman. She
worked at Mrs. Tomboken’s General Store in Rosedale and later at the “Second” Sandcut
Grocery and gas station. She finally retired from Indiana State University Housekeeping and
reverted to a well-earned “rest” as a mom and homemaker.Survivors include her son,
Norman Cottrell and his wife Jean Mason-Cottrell of Terre Haute; six grandchildren;
numerous great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews scattered all over the country. Maxene
and Herschel were close friends with the Travis McDonald family and frequently took
breakfast at Hardee’s Restaurant North among dear friends and distant relatives from the
north end of the county. They were longtime members of Joppa Friendship Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers; sister; and children.
Maxene spent her last years in residence at Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center
where she made many friends among staff and other residents.Funeral services are 11 a.m.
Wednesday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 N. Lafayette Avenue, with Dave Grubb
officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral
home.  
McElwain, Robert S.    

Robert S. McElwain, 69, of Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008, in Union
Hospital. He was born on June 29, 1938, in Brackenridge, Pa., to Clyde and Doris Lucille
Keys McElwain. He married Mary Fry McElwain, and she preceded him in death, in 1999.
Survivors include his brother, Blair McElwain and his wife Sue of Arizona; and one daughter,
Sheila of Georgia.Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one brother,
Paul McElwain.Robert served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1958. He was a member of
Murdock Racing Club and the Marine Corps League.Funeral services are 2 p.m.
Wednesday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton Street, with Marine Corps Chaplain,
Bill Herndon officiating. Visitation is 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Burial is in
Roselawn Memorial Park. Marine Corps League will be performing military graveside rites.

Rogers, Inga    

Inga Rogers, 80, of Terre Haute died at Southwood on Monday June 2, 2008 at 7:25 a.m.
She was born in Berlin, Germany, on Jan. 8. 1928, the daughter of Fredrick and Elizabetha
Rengel Heddesheimer. She was a retired seamstress for the former Roots Store, now known
as Macy’s. Her husband of 61 years, F. Dean Rogers, preceded her in death on June 17,
2007. She was also preceded by her parents and three sisters, Carola, Wally and Lily. She
was a member of the former Post No. 40 American Legion Auxiliary and the Women of the
Moose. Her survivors are a daughter, Debra Rogers of Terre Haute; two sons, Fred Rogers
and his wife Pat of Lafayette and David Rogers and his wife Debbi of Terre Haute. Her third
son, Timothy Rogers, preceded her in death in 1997. She has seven grandchildren, Todd,
Kevin, Craig, Kelley, Cassie, Tracey, and Scott. Her great-grandchildren are Justin,
Breanna, Ashley, Ava, and Paiton. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at DeBaun Springhill
Chapel with Pastor Ray Dyer officiating. Visitation hours are 4 to 8 p.m. today. Burial is in
Roselawn Memorial Park. For those who choose, contributions can be made to the Light
House Mission or Salvation Army in her memory.  
Vactor, Maxine Van    

Maxine Van Vactor, 90, of Terre Haute, died at 8:45 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2008, in Union
Hospital. She was born on March 29, 1917, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Pearl King and
Nettie Allen King. She was a homemaker.Survivors include her daughter, Judy Van Vactor;
five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.She was
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Van Vactor II, in 1989; brother, Leo
King; sister, Ruth Branson; son, John Van Vactor III; granddaughter, Sharon E. Gregory-
Hoffman; and great-granddaughter, Emma G. Gregory.She was a member of Twelve Points
Chapter Order of Easter Star and Burnett Firefigher’s Auxiliary.Funeral services are 6 p.m.

Hall, Nita Wanetta Bockhold    

Nita (Wanetta) Bockhold Hall, 78, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008. She is
survived by daughters, Linda Gorrell and her husband David, and Debby Searcy and her
husband Danny; son, Keith Bockhold; daughter, Sara Manus and her husband Steve; and a
son, Michael Bockhold. She was known as “Grandma” by 11 grandchildren and 15 great-
grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Richard “Dale” Hall; son, Joe
Bockhold Jr.; parents, Sarah and Clarence Goddard; brother, Clarence Goddard; sister,
Hazel McKinney and her daughter, Jody Featherston; sister, Opal Nicholson and many
others. Nita loved and lived life to its fullest. Most recently she resided in the Wyndmoor for
Senior Living. While her time living there was short, she fell in love with many of the people
who lived and worked there, especially her newest friend, Wally. Nita suffered many ailments
but they never slowed her down. She could be seen driving her electric scooter to do
everything. She loved to play poker, cut-throat pinochle, gin rummy and most recently Dollar
Bingo and Let’s Make a Deal. She thrived on chaos. Family, music, and television were
always around her. When she was younger, she loved to dance, mushroom hunt and go
fishing. Nita lived at 27th and Ft. Harrison for over 50 years and raised her children in the
Catholic faith. During her lifetime, Nita worked at Columbia Records, Bemis Bag, The
Tribune-Star and supervised market research for many years. All are welcome to join family
members 11 a.m. Saturday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton Street, to celebrate
a new life in Christ.  
Sanders, Hazel    

MECCA — Hazel Sanders, 82, of Mecca died at 12:15 a.m. Wednesday June 4, 2008, at her
residence. She was born July 21, 1925 in Atherton, Ind. the daughter of Charles and
Bernice Miller. She was a retired teacher of 32 years. She graduated from Mecca High
School and Indiana State University. She was a member of the Mecca Wesleyan Church,
Mecca Historical Society, Mecca A.R.A.B.S., and Retired Teachers Association of Parke
County.Survivors include her husband, Russell of Mecca, Ind.; a son, Ronnie Sanders and
wife Judy; a sister-in-law, Ruth Ann and her husband Harper; her grandchildren, Toby
Sanders and wife Coleen, Angela Bullington, David M. Sanders, Jenny Benjamin and
husband Brian, Jeremy Bettis and Jason Bettis; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces
and nephews. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Mecca School with Senior Pastor Chet
Todd officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Frist Funeral Home in Clinton and
one hour prior to the services at the church in Mecca on Friday. Entombment will follow in
Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made for

Meddles, Carl C.   

Carl C. Meddles, 86, of Terre Haute, passed away at 12:10 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008.
He was born on July 5, 1921, in Marion, Ohio, to Pearl Edgar and Rhoda Adaline Pletcher
Meddles. He married Dorothy Mae Kramer on Aug. 17, 1941. After her death, he married
Virginia Mae Hastenings on Dec. 30, 1984, and she also preceded him in death. After
attending Ohio State University, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was on
the USS Forster when it was commissioned and was aboard the USS Sprigg, a
minesweeper, when Japan surrendered. He was a member of the UDT landings at Anzio and
Omaha Beach. He retired from the U.S. Penitentiary. Carl, an Eagle Scout himself,
volunteered with youth groups including Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. He was a
member of American Legion Post 328, DAV, MOC, and Veterans of Foreign Wars 972,
where he served as chaplain, district commander and also served on the burial detail. He
also had volunteered at the Veterans’ Hospital. He believed every veteran was due respect.
His survivors are a daughter, Sharon Forbes of Terre Haute; a son, Larry Meddles of Brazil;
a daughter, Brenda Scott and husband Christopher of Terre Haute. There are eight
grandchildren, Toni Pilman and husband Jerry of Brazil, Terry Kistler and wife Amy of Terre
Haute, Trent Forbes and wife Jennifer of Terre Haute, Matthew Meddles of Brazil, Jennifer
Meddles of Riley, Martin Meddles and wife Jennifer of Evansville, Brandon Scott of Terre
Haute and Elizabeth Randolph and husband Clifton. He also has eight great-grandchildren:
Margran Pilman, Brennen Pilman, Megan Kistler, Cody Kistler, Marissa Rose, Phoebe
Randolph, Lillian Scott, and Clifton Randolph. Besides his two wives, he was preceded in
death by his parents; three brothers, Charles Owen, Donald Allen and Ronald Pearl
Meddles; a son, Roger Lee Meddles; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Jean Flint Meddles; and a
granddaughter, Crystal Leigh Scott. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Monday June 9, 2008 in
DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with Chris Newton officiating. Burial is in
Roselawn Memorial Park. Military rites will be performed by VFW Post 972. Visitation is 3 to
7 p.m. Sunday, with honor guard provided by VFW Post 972 and Bureau of Prisons Honor
Guard. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Crossroads of America Council,

Fitzgerald, Bryan   

Bryan Fitzgerald, 86, of Terre Haute died Sunday evening, June 1, 2008 in Union Hospital.
He was an accounts receivable manager for Eastern Express, Inc. He was born Aug. 25,
1921 in Iola, Ill. to Bryan S. Fitzgerald and Nina Fern Rogers. His wife, Lorraine Hering
Fitzgerald, preceded him in death in 2000. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law,
Dr. Bryan T. Fitzgerald and Suse Ann of Dayton, Ohio and Dr. Gary A. Fitzgerald and
Sherry of Terre Haute; a brother, James Fitzgerald and his wife Dorothy of Woodlawn, Ill.; a
sister, Isabelle Steenbergen of Chillicothe, Ill.; four grandchildren, Brett Fitzgerald, Brooke
Purnell, Latrice Elaine Wren    

First Lady Latrice Elaine Wren Purnell of Terre Haute, passed away at 11:57 a.m. Tuesday,
June 3, 2008, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born July 26, 1966, in Centerville,
Ill., to Marvin L. Wren and Dorothy L. Ferrell Wren. She was a teacher for Vigo County
School Corporation at Sugar Grove Elementary School. She was formerly employed at IBM
Corporation and Ford Motor Credit. She was a member of the Bethlehem Temple Church of
the apostolic faith. Survivors include her husband, Elder J. Glenn Purnell; son, J. Glenn “D.
J.” Purnell Jr.; daughter, Dorthia E. Anne Purnell; both parents; sister, Yalanda A. Wren
Harris and husband John; nephews, Denzel R. Harris and Dontel L. Harris; niece, Danielle
M. Harris; and a host of aunts, uncle, cousins, relatives and friends; and a host of students
which she taught at Sugar Grove Elementary School. She had a master’s degree in
education from Indiana State University, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration
from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., and a master’s degree in business
administration from Indiana Wesleyn University.Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday in
Cross Tabernacle Church, 2929 N. Seventh Street, with Bishop G. W. Frazier officiating.

Wright, Daryl L.    

Daryl L. Wright, 57, of Terre Haute, died at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, in his
residence. He was born in Terre Haute, on Dec. 3, 1950, to Gertrude Lucille Wright, and she
preceded him in death. He had worked for the Laborers Local 204 and was a member of the
Berean Baptist Church. Survivors include an uncle, Charles R. Wright; and three cousins,
Pamela Brown and her husband Oakley of Mooresville, Larry Wright and his wife Judy of
Clinton, Howell Carter and his wife Liz of Indianapolis.Memorial services are 2 p.m.
Wednesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with Pastor Larry Lily
officiating. In keeping with his wishes cremation was chosen. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial
Park at a later date. Friends may call 1 p.m. until service time on Wednesday.  
Moore, Emmabelle "Belie"   

CLINTON — Emmabelle “Belie” Moore, 83, of Mooresville, formerly of Clinton, died Friday,
June 6, 2008, in Hendricks Regional Health in Danville, Ind. She was born on April 4, 1925,
in Vermillion County, to Paul and Mary (Farrington) Botner.Survivors include her husband,
Wayne O. Moore, whom she married on Feb. 7, 1948; son, Gary W. Moore and his wife
Patricia of Plainfield; daughter, Pam Moore of Mooresville; brother, James Botner and his
wife Shirley of St. Bernice; and grandchildren, Brooke Moore and Jacob Moore.She was
preceded in death by her brothers, Vernon and Paul Botner; and sisters, Jeanne DeBolt,
Helen Moore, Norma George and Elizabeth Clark.Mrs. Moore graduated from St. Bernice
High School in St. Bernice and earned her BS.BA from Olivet Nazarene College in
Kankakee, Ill. She later earned her master’s degree in education from Indiana State
University. Her teaching career began in 1948 in Sparta, Mich. She began teaching fifth
grade in Clinton, and remained for 20 years before moving to Mooresville in 1966. She then
became a fifth grade teacher at Plainfield Elementary for 20 years, before retiring in 1986.
Mrs. Moore was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mooresville and the
Indiana State Teachers Association. In addition, Mrs. Moore was a member of the Hendricks
County Garden Club and had received top honors in the club. She was also an avid bridge
player.Funeral services are 2 p.m. Monday in Frist Funeral Home, 458 Blackman St., in
Clinton. Burial is in Roselawn Cemetery in North Terre Haute. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday
in Carlisle and Son Funeral Chapel in Mooresville and 12 to 2 p.m. Monday in Frist Funeral
Home.  
Thorlton, Wayne Eugene "Gene"    

LINTON — Wayne Eugene “Gene” Thorlton, 81, of Linton and formerly of Terre Haute, died
Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the Greene County General Hospital. He was born Nov. 12, 1926,
in Terre Haute, to Clarence Thorlton and Esther Sidenbender Thorlton. He married
Margaret K. Burk, and she survives. He also was the constant caregiver to his wife since
1995, after she suffered a life altering stroke. He also is survived by two sons, Dan Thorlton
and wife Cindy of Linton, and John Thorlton and wife Paula of Robinson, Ill.; three
grandsons, Carter Thorlton of Carbondale, Ill., Collin Thorlton of Robinson, and Tim
Thorlton of Linton; two brothers, Ronald Thorlton and wife Thelma of Terre Haute, and Jerry
Thorlton and wife Pat of Greenwood; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in
death by his parents. Wayne graduated from Garfield High School in 1945. He served in the
U.S. Army during the World War II era in the Philippines and Japan. He started Technical
Manufacturing Services Inc. in Martinsville, Ind., in 1971 retiring in 1994. He then worked
part-time at McDonald’s flipping burgers. He was a member and an active elder of First
Presbyterian Church, Martinsville Athletic Booster Club, Martinsville Masonic Lodge, Murat
Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and Indiana University Varsity Club, was
past member and past president of Martinsville Optimist Club, Martinsville Rotary Club, past
executive director of Martinsville Chamber of Commerce, and Business Man of the Year
1977. He also was past board member of Barbara B. Jordan YMCA, Big Brothers, Big Sisters
of Morgan County, past chairman J.T.P.A. Circle 7 Training Council, Community Service
Center of Morgan County, Homeless Shelter, Englishton Park Retirement Home and
Presbyterian Ministries Inc. He was on the cover of Iron Age Magazine in 1969. He testified
before then-Sen. Dan Quayle on hearings to establish Job Training Partnership Act.
Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with Rev. Mike
Roth officiating. Burial will be in the Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m.
Thursday.  
Parker, Melody L.    

Melody L. Parker, 41, of Terre Haute died at 5:05 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2008, in her
residence. She was born on Oct. 25, 1966, in Terre Haute, to James A. Stevens and Sue
Ellen Compton Stevens. She was a waitress at Coffee Cup South and Pizza Hut
North.Survivors include her father; her mother, Sue Ellen Compton Weger; her husband,

Neice, Rita Concepta Burns "Connie"   

Rita Concepta “Connie” Burns Neice, joined her loved ones in heaven on Tuesday, June 10,
2008. She was born Dec. 3, 1946, the eldest of 10 children, to John D. and Rita E. Burns.
She will be remembered for being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and
friend. She was a homemaker, previously employed by CBS (Columbia House) and Sacred
Heart School Cafeteria. She also operated Grab-A-Bite deli in downtown Terre Haute and
“Connie’s Cakes” from her home. She is survived by her devoted daughter, son-in-law, and
grandson, Robyn Neice, Chris Shelton, and Damon Neice; step-children, Theresa and Jack
Brown, R.J. and Diane Neice of Brazil, Russell Neice, and Tony and Shanti Neice; sisters,
Joan and Mike Evans, Joyce Munson of Adrian, Mich., Mary “Mebby” and Dale Griffy of
Lewis, Ind., and Patricia Burns; brothers, Paul and Sondra Burns and Bernard “Bernie” and
Patricia Burns; Goddaughter, Stacey Voll; special friends, Rose Patterson and Liz Harris;
cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Richard, James Neice Sr.
whom she married Aug. 3, 1977; brothers, David Burns of Lansing, Mich., and John “Tom”
Burns; and sister, Kathleen Hartley of Adrian, Mich. and longtime pet “Pokey.”She graduated
from Schulte High School and was a member of St. Ann and Sacred Heart Parishes. She
was passionate about cooking, loved to prepare meals for others, read cookbooks, and
watch food network. She also enjoyed music, dancing, shopping and playing word games.

Winifred Rose Bellinger, 78, died at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, in her residence.
She was born Sept. 30, 1929, in Vigo County to James Higham and Blanche Hoskins
Higham. She graduated in 1947 from Glenn High School. She worked at CBS and was a
group home manager.She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Bellinger of Indianapolis;
three sons, Pete Bellinger and wife Suzi of Terre Haute, Pat Bellinger and wife Denise of
Yuccipa, Calif., Jeff Bellinger and wife Patty of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Jenney
Bellinger-Baugh, Chris, Kyle and Kevin Bellinger; two great-grandchildren, Carson and
Peighton Baugh; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews and great-
great nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband William A. Bellinger
in 1988; one son, Mike Bellinger; one daughter, Susie Asbury; one brother, Jim “Popcorn”
Higham and one sister, Marguerite Leach. She was a member of Barbour Avenue United
Methodist Church and Dietz Lake Association. She was very active in many activities in her
children’s lives and in the community. Funeral services are noon Saturday in Callahan-
DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., in Terre Haute with Pastor Aaron Wheaton

Thelma L. “Mamaw B.” Bradbury, 95, of Terre Haute, died at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, June 11,
2008, in Meadows Manor North. She was born July 11, 1912, in Sullivan County, to Cecil
Dale and Kathryn Reed Dale. She was a homemaker.Survivors included her sons, Robert
Bradbury and his wife Doris and Donald Bradbury and his wife Kathy; one daughter, Betty L.
Gorby and her husband Wendell; sister, Marjorie Gorby; grandchildren, Sue Anderson, Ed
Bradbury, Debbie Hartman, Mike Gorby, Gary Gorby, Jon Bradbury, Kim Butterfield, William
Bradbury, and Brittney Bradbury; 25 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-
grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leon Williams
Bradbury in 1974; brothers, Tom, James, Raymond and Gene Dale; sister, Joy Coy; son,
Douglas Bradbury in 1947; grandson, Gary Wayne Bradbury in 1951; and great-
granddaughter, Elizabeth Bradbury in 1999.She attended Barbour Avenue United Methodist
Church and also attended Hymeria High School. She was an avid bowler until she reached
the age of 90. She deeply loved and enjoyed her family. She also loved fried chicken.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church with
Pastor Tim Voll officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Clark, William F.   

William F. Clark, 76, of Terre Haute, died Thursday afternoon, June 12, 2008, in Methodist
Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born in Terre Haute, on March 10, 1932, to Katherine
(Kerins) and Harold F. Clark.He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Butler University’
s School of Pharmacy. As a registered pharmacist, he owned and operated Clark’s
Pharmacy at 25th and Park for 25 years, during which time he added two other pharmacy
locations. He served as president of the Terre Haute Association of Registered Pharmacists,
was on the Board of the Indiana Pharmacists Association, and was a member of the National
Pharmacists Association. After 10 years of membership in the Holly Society of America and
the Great River Chapter of the Holly Society of America, Bill shared his interest in hollies with
the Terre Haute community by founding the Clark-Landsbaum Deming Park Holly Arboretum.
The Arboretum showcases over 400 holly plants and is one of only 18 in the United States
recognized by the Holly Society of America as an Official Holly Arboretum. He served as the
original president of the Board of Directors of Friends of the Arboretum. Bill and the Board
have expanded efforts to include planting hollies throughout the city, hoping to establish
“Terre Haute – Indiana’s City of Hollies.” In other areas, Bill’s past memberships include the
Sycamore Club, Elks Lodge 86, and TREES, Inc. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church for 52 years, where he served on a number of committees.He is survived by his wife,
Marilyn (Boyle) Clark; son, Robert and wife Belinda Clark of Terre Haute and son, Mark and
wife Kristi Clark and their children, Natalie and Nathan Clark of Norton Shores, Mich.;
daughter, Cathy and husband Kurt Meyer and their children, Marie and Matthew Meyer of
Fishers, Ind.; and son, Scott Clark of Indianapolis.Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted

Barbara J. Lugar, 75, of Terre Haute, died at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, in Terre
Haute Regional Hospital. She was born Nov. 8, 1932, in Muncie, to Floyd Curts and Eva
Jane Jones Curts. She was a homemaker and also worked at Sue’s Hallmark; prior to that,
she was a secretary for Wabash Valley Realtors. Survivors include her husband, Joseph J.
Lugar Sr.; one daughter, Paula J. McCardle and her husband Grant of Plainfield; one son,
Joseph J. Lugar Jr. and his wife Robyn; six grandchildren, Mattheu Lugar and his wife
Andrea, Jordan Clark and her husband Brad, Katie Lugar, Khris McCardle and his wife Nikki,
Grant McCardle II, and Clark McCardle; and several nieces and nephews. She was a
member of United Methodist Temple, and very active in the Stonecroft Ministries and other
bible studies, a member of Beta Sigma Phi and the Newcomer’s Club. Barbara was a very
loving mother and enjoyed spending time with her family, she was their “pal” and “mother,”
she was an excellent homemaker and was the ideal wife and perfect mate.Funeral services
are 10 a.m. Monday in United Methodist Temple with the Rev. Allen Rumble officiating.
Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive. Burial is
in Roselawn Memorial Park. The family has suggested that if friends so desire, memorial
contributions may be made to either Light House Mission or 14th and Chestnut Community

Hazel T. Kuhns, 89, of Terre Haute, died Friday evening, June 13, 2008, in Meadows Manor
North. She was born Jan. 20, 1919, in Flat Rock, Ill., to John Allen Taylor and Dora Stant
Taylor. Her husband, Dr. Hoyt S. Kuhns, preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1986.Survivors
include her son and daughter-in-law, Everett G. and Barbara Kuhns of Indianapolis; and two
granddaughters, Lissa Ho and her husband Brian, and Elaine Johnson and her husband
Lucas.Hazel was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and was a longtime
member of Badoura Temple 23 Daughters of the Nile.Graveside funeral services will be
conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2008, in Roselawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Paul
Wagner officiating. There is no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan

Robert M. “Mitch” Mitchell Sr., 77, of Terre Haute, passed away Friday, June 13, 2008, at
Union Hospital. He was born June 21, 1930, in Fontanet, to Lee Mitchell and Thelma
Jackson Mitchell. He had worked for Wabash Valley Fiber Box, and Allis Chalmers and Link
Belt in Indianapolis. He married Rose Ann Padgett McGaughy. Survivors include his wife;
four children, Linda Riley and husband Michael of Pennsylvania, Dan McGaughy and wife
Judi of Terre Haute, Robert Mitchell Jr. and wife Paula of Kingston, N.Y., and Angela Alturki
and husband Faisal, Houston; grandchildren, Michael Riley Jr. , Valerie Wilson and husband
Charles, all of Pennsylvania, Kimberly McGaughy of Terre Haute, Tracy Hackett of West
Terre Haute, Lauira Rose Mitchell, Robert Mitchell, and Christian Mitchell, all of New York,
Mansour Alturki, Abdullah Alturki, Nora Ann Alturki, Neda Alturki, and Reem Alturki, all of
Texas; two great-grandchildren, James Michael Valentine, and Andrew Riley Wilson, both of
Pennsylvania; a sister, Norma Jeffers and husband Jeff of Indianapolis; a brother-in-law,
Pete Malone of Dennison, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death
by is parents; brother, Bill Mitchell; and sister, Rosalie Malone. He was a graduate of
Gerstmeyer High School in 1948. He served in the military police with the U.S. Army during
the Korean War. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, and the
American Legion. He was an avid golfer, loved to hunt mushrooms, loved car shows, but
most of all, to spend time with his grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at
Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with the Rev. Dana Coverstone officiating.
Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today.  
LaLoux, Ashley Marie   

Ashley Marie LaLoux “Hunnybunny,” age 15, was lifted home by angels to be with the Lord
from her home on Sunday, June 15, 2008. She was born Jan. 17, 1993, in Terre Haute to
Joe and Lisel (Secrest) LaLoux.She was a member of Terre Haute South freshman and
Riley softball teams, Terre Haute South Orchestra, and St. Benedict’s Church. She just
completed the 9th grade and was awaiting 10th grade at Terre Haute South after summer
vacation.She has left behind her parents; two brothers, Joe and Benjamin LaLoux; maternal
“grambunny,” Marie Secrest; paternal grandmother, Helen LaLoux; seven uncles; eight
aunts; numerous cousins, stepaunts and stepuncles. She also has left behind her three
cats whom she loved very much. She is welcomed into heaven’s gates by her paternal
grandfather, Florent LaLoux Sr.; and great-grandmother, Florence Murphy.Visitation will be
4 to 8 p.m. today at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St. Services will be 1 p.m.
Friday at the funeral home, with Father Joel Burget officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn
Memorial Park.

Mildred Marie Jones, 89, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008. She was born
July 24, 1918, to John S. and Anna Spoors Handlin. On Sept. 25, 1940, she married Virgil
D. Jones. She retired from International Housewares after many years. She was the mother
of Barbara A. Carpenter, Carolyn J. McClain and Larry J. Jones.Survivors include her
daughters, Barbara A. Carpenter and husband Ken of Brazil and Carolyn J. McClain and
husband Alan of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Sherry Richard and husband Faron of Brazil,
Michael Carpenter and wife Ruth of Indianapolis, Martin Robbins and wife Brenda of

Wakefield, Robert Leroy   

CLINTON — Robert Leroy Wakefield, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008,
in Vermillion Convalescent Center in Clinton. He was born on Jan. 25, 1923, in Terre Haute.
He served honorably in the U.S. Navy for 22 years. Upon discharge, he was employed in the
maintenance department at Indiana State University until his retirement in 1986. Survivors
include his sister, Barbara Hardesty of Terre Haute; a brother, Byron Wakefield of Jupiter,
Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rose
Hardesty Wakefield in 1996. Bob was a member of the local chapter of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 972. A memorial service is 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2008, in the
chapel in Roselawn Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor
Guard. There is no visitation. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, is in
charge of arrangements.

Margaret Tichenor, 90, of Terre Haute, died Thursday, June 19, 2008, in Memorial Hospital
in Woodstock, Ill. She was born Nov. 30, 1917, in Terre Haute, to Herbert Arthur Brown and
Bessie Lucas Brown. Margaret was retired from the trust department of Terre Haute First
National Bank. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Geiley Tichenor, in
1997.Survivors include her son, William T. Tichenor and his wife Rebecca of Goshen;
brothers, James Brown of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Bob Brown of Kansas City; a sister,
Helen Roecker of Crawfordsville; and grandchildren, Peter D. Tichenor and his wife Janna
of Indianapolis and Abigail E. McLaren and her husband Craig of Woodstock. She was
preceded in death by her husband; and her sister, Jean Shanklin.Margaret was a member
of Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was a volunteer at the preschool. She also
was a member of the Red Hat Society. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 24,

Alvin H. Long Jr. 69, of Terre Haute died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Meadows Manor
North Retirement and Convalescent Center. He was born Nov. 22, 1938, in Terre Haute to
Alvin H. Long Sr. and Teenie Marie Pierce Long.He is survived by his long time companion,
Sondra Kimbler; seven children, Dale Long and wife Cheryl, David Long and companion
Tana, all of Terre Haute, Rhonda Baer and companion Shane of Petersburg, Becky Powers
and husband Kerry of Carlisle, Treavour Long and companion Misti, Alexander Long and
companion Crystal, and Nathan Long, all of Terre Haute; stepchildren, David Donna and
wife Michelle of Tiffin, Ohio, Paul Donna and companion Karen of Terre Haute, Brian
Donna of Indianapolis, Cindee Stansbury and husband Bryan of Greenwood, and James
Kimbler and wife Loetta of Terre Haute; brothers, Robert Long and wife Pat of Terre Haute,
and James Long and wife Jeannie of Sullivan; one sister, Nancy Groth and husband Larry
of Florida; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, Brent Long. He served in the U.S.
Navy on the USS Randolph. He loved woodworking and cabinet making.Services are 1 p.m.

Johnson, Dorothea Josefina Theresia Becking "Thea"    

Dorothea Josefina Theresia “Thea” Becking Johnson, passed away Monday morning in her
home in Terre Haute. Born Jan 10 1934, in Almelo, The Netherlands, and moved to the
United States in 1953. She married John F. “Jack” Johnson in 1963.She is survived by her
husband of 45 years; her four children, Angela Clark, Jackie Eberle, Ann Dodds, and John
Johnson; three sons-in-law, Trey Clark, Mike Eberle, Dan Dodds; one daughter-in-law,
Jenny Johnson; eight grandchildren, Kendal and Emily Clark, Michael and Mandee Eberle,
David and Holly Dodds, Joshua and Jane Johnson; a great-grandchild, Landon Wells;
sister, Ina Hagan; and brother, Jozef “Joe” Becking. She is preceded in death by her
parents, John and Elizabeth Becking; sisters, Dini deKruyff, Josephine deBlecourt, and
Greta Paauwe; and several other loved ones.She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church in Terre Haute, and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, in Sarasota Fla. She also was a
member of the Red Hat Club, German Oberlander Club, Third order of the Carmelite
Monastery, Altar Society, and church choir, among many others. Her legacy lives in the
eyes and hearts of other family, as well as the number of murals she painted in Vigo
County, and a huge number of contributions she made to the community over the years.
Her love for art, music, and her flowers has touched many lives. The family would like to
extend a very special thank you to Joni and the rest of the Hospice staff, and to Father
Richard, for all their support, and assistance they provided.Respects can be made at St.
Joseph’s University Parish, 113 S. Fifth St. Terre Haute from 8:30 to 10 a.m. today. A mass

Buchholz, Edwin Howard    

BRAZIL — Edwin Howard Buchholz, 83, of rural Brazil, died at 10:16 a.m. Monday, June 23,
2008, at St. Vincent Clay Hospital. He was born Jan. 16, 1925, in Brazil, to Henry and
Elizabeth Schwab Buchholz. He graduated from Brazil High School with the class of 1943.
Normandy Invasion landing on Omaha Beach, and in the Northern France campaigns. He
earned the Purple Heart for wounds received on Aug. 14, 1944, in France. He was
honorably discharged from active military duty on Sept. 4, 1945. He married Betty Secrest
on Sept. 4, 1948, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Brazil. He worked as a newspaper
stereotyper at the Brazil Times for 12 years and then for another 23 years at the Terre
Haute Tribune Star. He also worked with his wife Betty as owners and operators of their
own flower shop. He was a lifelong member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, a member of
American Legion Post 2, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1127, and the National Rifle
Association. He enjoyed time in the outdoors big game hunting and fishing. He was
preceded in death by his parents; and son-in-law, Ron Latham.He is survived by his wife,
Betty Buchholz; two daughters, Susan Ankrom and husband Dale of Carmel, and Nancy
Latham of Center Point; two sons, Stephen Buchholz and wife Rita, and Mark Buchholz
and wife Rita, all of Brazil; grandchildren, Diana Crafton, Brad Buchholz, Scott Riddell, all
of Brazil, Stephanie Stanley of Terre Haute, Jennifer Starke of Valparaiso, and Lacey
Buchholz of Indianapolis; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Don Buchholz of Arizona; and
other extended family members. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Moore Funeral
Home, 142 N. Washington St., and one hour before funeral services on Thursday. Funeral
services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with a private burial with military
honors to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute.
