Tomlinson, Curtis L.    

Curtis L. Tomlinson, 85, of Terre Haute, passed away Monday, June 30, 2008, in his
residence. He was born Sept. 3, 1922, in Terre Haute, to Riley Glen Tomlinson and Lottie
Mae Curtis Tomlinson. He worked as a television repairman. He married Agnes Nadine
Easton, and she survives.Also surviving are five children, Curtis A. Tomlinson and
companion Carolyn Bowers, Sharon Downing and husband Ralph, Byron Tomlinson and
wife Tina, Becky Fisher and husband Tony, and Debbie Rudisel, all of Terre Haute; a
brother Franz Tomlinson and wife Kitty of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Angie and Lance
Taylor, Christy and Randall, Lisa Bredison, Curtis F. Tomlinson, all of Texas, Terri and
David Fields, Ralphie Downing III, Brian and Rachel Tomlinson, Shawn and Holly Stevens,
CJ Stevens, Heather and Brad Shelton, Donnie Heck Jr., Derrick and Becca Heck, Rachel
Rudisel and companion Jeremy Ash, TJ and Ashley Rudisel, all Terre Haute, Scott and
Michelle Fisher, and Christina Fisher, all of West Terre Haute; 37 great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Steve
Tomlinson; and great-grandson, Brandon Smith. He was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High
School, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of First Church
of the Nazarene. He was a musician and an artist, one of the original singers in the
Embassador's Quartet, played in the Bell Choir and the Brass Quartet at the church. He
also was a member of the American Legion. He and his wife made several missionary trips
overseas. He was a very loving father and grandfather. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at
First Nazarene Church, with the Rev. Mark Fleschner officiating. Burial will follow in
Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Roselawn Funeral Home,
7500 N. Clinton St., and 11 a.m, until services Thursday at the church.

Callahan, Wanda Elnore   

Wanda Elnore Callahan, 94, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday morning, July 2, 2008, in
Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was retired from Quaker Maid, Inc. She
was born Jan. 24, 1914, in Odon, Ind., to Lawrence E. Callahan and Sada R. Chandler
Callahan. Survivors include two nephews, Mike Wadsworth and his wife Molly and Larry
Callahan and his wife Lisa; two nieces, Patricia Wadsworth Nation and her husband Van and
Colleen Callahan Walsh; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in
death by her parents; a brother, Lawrence E. Callahan; and two sisters, Helen C. Wadsworth
and Elizabeth Callahan Willis-Hughes.Wanda loved to travel, and was a longtime member of
Hulman Street Wesleyan Church, where she taught Sunday School. Funeral services will be
conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 5, 2008, in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605
South 25th Street, with the Rev. Curtis Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial

Norris, John Howard    

John Howard Norris, 66, of Terre Haute, died Friday, July 4, 2008. He was born March 26,
1942, in Hymera, to Parker Norris and Edith Clark Norris. He had formerly worked at J.I. Case
in Terre Haute and had recently been working at NFI as a driver.Survivors include his wife of
24 years, Carlinda Harvey Norris; a daughter, Ronda Harvey of Terre Haute and daughter
number two, Kendra Bratcher of Terre Haute; and one granddaughter, Morgan Sanders.He
was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Clark Allen Norris.He was a Master
Mason and Past-Master of Hymera Lodge 588 Free and Accepted Mason, Past Monarch of
Kerman Grotto, Swords of Bunker Hill, Son's of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of
Police, Veterans of Foreign Wars, North American Hunter Club, Buckmaster's, N.R.A., Harley

Richardson, Margaret Ellen   

Margaret Ellen Richardson, beloved mother, daughter, grandmother and friend passed away
peacefully in her home Thursday, July 3, 2008, with her daughter at her side. She was born
Oct. 25, 1931 in Valdosta, Ga., to Leroy Brown and Margaret I. Touchton Brown. Margaret
loved children and teaching was one of her many gifts. She worked for Vigo County School
Corporation as a teacher, counselor, attendance officer and children’s advocate for 27
years. She was nominated teacher of the year twice and was awarded attendance officer of
the year for the state of Indiana. She worked diligently with a taskforce to prevent child
abuse during her years with the school corporation and had a special love for all of her
students, but especially the wilted child.Survivors include her son, Ronald F. Richardson and
his wife Anne of Terre Haute; one daughter, Barbara E. (Richardson) Martin and her
husband Darrell of Rockville; three grandsons, Derek L. Martin and Dustin R. Martin of
Crawfordsville and Steven L. Richardson of Terre Haute; sister-in-law and good friend, Betty
Ann Richardson of Terre Haute and sister-in-law, Nita Brown of Valdosta; three great-
grandchildren, Rachael, Dylan and Seth of Crawfordsville; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Lee Roy Brown and Clyde
BrownShe loved to travel and study genealogy and was a member of the Wabash Valley
Genealogical Society and the Huxford (Georgia) Genealogical Society. She also was a
member of the Wabash Valley Scottish Society, The Colonial Dames and Fort Harrison
Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Alpha Delta Kappa, Homemakers
Extension Club, Twelve Points chapter of Eastern Star and a member of Badoura Temple 23
Daughters of the Nile. After her retirement, she worked as a volunteer at Billie Creek Village
in Rockville, where she demonstrated and made lye soap and candle making. She enjoyed
talking with the children and teaching everyone who came through Billie Creek about the
history of the village and how to make the soap and candles. Her favorite time of working
there was during the annual School Days at Billie Creek, when children from school
corporations everywhere in the state came for field trips. She also helped to raise funds to
save the Governor’s house located in Billie Creek. She wrote and published a teaching
manual to assist new school counselors in learning how to approach difficult problems that
children present within their offices.Visitation is 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today in Roselawn Funeral
Home, 7500 N. Clinton Street, North Terre Haute, followed by services at 3:30 p.m. in North
Terre Haute. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ALS Association.  
Nicoson, Dean Eugene    

Dean Eugene Nicoson, 74, lifelong resident of Terre Haute, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, July
3, 2008, in Union Hospital ICU due to complications from an existing heart condition. He was
a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle who
developed a timeless circle of friendship with those around him. He was born on Feb. 25,
1934, the second son of Zenis and Mary Brown Nicoson. Zenis was fire chief for the city of
Terre Haute. The six Nicoson boy, Ronnie, Dean, Pat, Skip, Barry and Steve, were well-
known Terre Haute athletes. Dean played football and golf for Garfleld High School,
graduating in 1952. He continued to be an avid golfer during his lifetimeDean married
Barbara Jean Taylor on Aug. 16, 1952, and they would have celebrated their 56-year
anniversary next month. They were blessed with two sons, Kenneth Dean Nicoson and
Jeffrey Lee Nicoson. Jeffrey passed away June 3, 1978. Dean retired from the Terre Haute
Fire Department in 1978 after 20 years of dedicated service. He also was a pipefitter with
Local 157 and he retired from there in 1990. Barbara and Dean also managed J.C. Spence's
Storage Center on Highway 46 from 1990 to 2004.Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara;
his son, Kenneth Dean Nicoson and his wife Cherryl; grandchildren, David and his wife
Laura, Brian, Michael and his girlfriend A.J., and Katie and her boyfriend Nate; great-
grandchildren, Nate, Abbygayle, Caitlyn and Caleb. He was awaiting a new great-
granddaughter, Addison. Also his brothers, Barry Nicoson and his wife Nancy and Steve
Nicoson and his wife Sharon; sisters-in-law, Nadine Nicoson, Carolyn Nicoson, Charlotte and
Gene Shike, and Loretta and Roy Lang. He was a favored relative to his many nieces,
nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey; his parents, Zenis and
Mary Nicoson; brothers, Ronnie, Norman (Skip), Keith (Pat); aunt Bessie Lancaster; and in-
laws, Kenneth and Mary Taylor.He was a member of Terre Haute Masonic Lodge 19 Free
and Accepted Masons, Terre Haute Valley Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Retired
Fireman’s Association, Rockville Elks Lodge 2471, Marine Corps League, and Hoosier Hills
Golf Club.Funeral services and interment will be 12 noon Tuesday, July 8, 2008, in
Roselawn Memorial Park, 7500 N. Clinton Street, with Pastor Bernie Jackson officiating.

Nelson, Anna Evadine Todd    

Anna Evadine Todd Nelson, 94, of West Terre Haute, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008,
in her residence. She was born Jan. 24, 1914, in Sandford, the daughter of Fred Clay Todd
and Jesse Ann Vermillion Todd. She married Elmer C. Nelson on Jan. 28, 1936, and he
preceded her. Known to her friends and family by her middle name, Evadine, she was a
homemaker and also had worked as department store manager for Montgomery Ward for
over 18 years. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church and the White
Shrine of Jerusalem. Survivors include her three children, Sandra Delaunois of West Terre
Haute, Ronald T. Nelson of Fort Smith, Ark., and Beverly J. Baum of West Terre Haute; nine
grandchildren, Kathy Pipis and husband Pat of Roseville, Calif., Doug Delaunois and wife
Gina of Paris, Ill., Jeff Nelson and wife Kelly of Eudora, Kan., Chris Nelson and wife Dana of
Greenwood, Brad Nelson and wife Melody of Terre Haute, Eric Nelson and wife Mindy of
Ottowa, Kan., Von L. Baum Jr. and wife Trina of Porter, Angela Johnson and husband Tom of
Gaithersburg, Md., and Kevin Baum and wife Eugenie of Carmel; 22 great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband;

Downing, Barbara Ann (Cleghorn)    

Barbara Ann (Cleghorn) Downing passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Union
Hospital at 12:22 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008. She was born Sept. 26, 1930, to Fred and
Ethyle Cleghorn who preceded her. She was a life long resident of Terre Haute, former
employee of Ann-Page Quaker Maid, owner-operator of the Blazing Stump Restaurant, sitter
and substitute mother to hundreds of children. In her long, happy life, she enjoyed poodles,
birds, cooking, dancing, singing with big bands and on the radio, Larry Bird and the Boston
Celtics, and family above all else. She was preceded in death by Edward William Downing,
her husband of 61 years; brother, Donald; sisters, Margaret and Marjorie Ruth; in-laws, Roy
and Mildred Marlow. She is survived by brother, Fred Cleghorn of Florida; brother, Kenny
Banta and Judy Robison of Terre Haute; daughter, Brenda Grinstead of Terre Haute; son,
Edward William Downing II and Stephanie Van Sickel of Terre Haute; son, Joseph Downing

Crowder, Duane   

Duane Crowder, 94, of Terre Haute passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2008, in his residence.
He was born May 16, 1914, in Parke County, Indiana, to Austin Crowder and Bessie
Ferguson Crowder. Duane was a retired letter carrier. Survivors include three sons, Dennis
Crowder and his wife Suzanne of Brazil, Michael Crowder and his wife Jacqueline of Terre
Haute, and Gary Crowder and his wife Jennie of Terre Haute; a sister, Fauneil Rushworth of
Terre Haute; five granddaughters, Julia Lambert and her fiancée, Bryce Foster, Miranda
Martin and her husband Ross, Jessica Crowder and fiancée Geoff Wayton, Nicole Crowder
and Eva Crowder; a great-grandson, Reid Martin; and several nieces and nephews. Duane
was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Lois, who passed away last year to Alzheimer’
s; and his parents. Duane was a member of Social Lodge 86 F and AM, Retired Letter
Carriers Association, the Lawton Byrum VFW Post 972, and First Christian Church of
Sullivan. He served his country during World War II, being in D-Day +2 at Normandy going
on to Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe with the United States Army 90th Division the
Tough ‘Ombres. Duane was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, EAME Theater
Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars and the Bronze Arrowhead Medal.Services will be on Friday, July
11, 2008 at 11:00 A.M., in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with
the Reverend Jeff Lee officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with Military

Nancy Priscilla McClain Smith, 66, of Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord at 8:45 a.m.
Friday, July 11, 2008, in Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Aug.
5, 1941, in Terre Haute, to Charles and Helen Cornutt McClain. She was a 1958 graduate of
Wiley High School and a 1962 graduate of Indiana State University. Survivors include her
mother of Terre Haute; her husband, Theodore R. ‘Ted’ Smith, whom she married on June
28, 1959; one son, Todd Smith and his wife Debbie; one brother, John McClain and his wife
Becky; a grandson, Zachary Smith; stepgrandson, Joshua Altmanshofer; sisters-in-law,
Jeannine Smith and Linda Smith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles (Fred) and Sharon
Smith; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who loved their aunt
Nancy. She was preceded in death by her father; and her grandparents.She had been an
OB-GYN nurse at the former St. Anthony Hospital, a nurse in Werstburg, Germany, while her
husband was there in the military, the office nurse for Dr. Gerrish, had worked in hospitals in
Fort Wayne, Miami, and Tuscola, Ill. She was also an office nurse for Dr. Paul Siebenmorgan
and Dr. Susan Amos. She was the utilization review coordinator for both Charter Hospital
and Royal Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. She loved her Beta Sigma Phi
sisters. She was a 48-year member of Beta Sigma Phi and had held both chapter and city
offices. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling all over the United States and
camping with friends and family.Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday in DeBaun Springhill
Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with Mark Grayless officiating. Entombment is in Roselawn
Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Calling hours are after 3 p.m. today with her sorority
giving their memorial at 7 p.m.  
Wilson, James    

James Wilson, 66, of Terre Haute, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2008, in Union Hospital.
He was born on March 20, 1942, in Terre Haute, to William D. and Ruth Lucille Wilson. He
was a past commander of SAL Riley Legion. Jim loved to mow his grass and kept his yard
looking beautiful. He worked at CBS, Chesty Foods and Terre Haute Housing Authority.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jo Ann Akers Wilson, whom he married on March 23, 1989;
children, Nancy Waltermire and her husband Gary of Terre Haute and Harold Joseph Wilson
of Indianapolis; a granddaughter, Ashley Waltermire; grandsons, James and Jarrett, both of
Indianapolis, and Jonathan; and a great-grandson, Ashton. Also surviving are a
stepdaughter, Brenda Maddaluna and her husband Anthony of North Salem, N.Y.;
stepgrandchildren, James Maddaluna of New York, and Erika Kunkel of Wilmington, N.C.;
stepsons, James Jeffrey Pierson and his wife Vicki of Shelburn, and Todd William Pierson
and his wife Penny of Farmersburg; and many other stepgrandchildren and
great-grandchildren.Jim was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James B. Wilson; a
brother, William D. Wilson; and one grandson, Ronald Gordon Waltermire.The family would

Delbert R. Judd, 64, of West Terre Haute, passed away peacefully Friday, July 11, 2008, in
Union Hospital with his family by his side. He was born on Dec. 22, 1943, to Ivan Earl and
Martha Lee Stringer Judd.Survivors include his three brothers, Robert Judd and wife Debbie
of Louden, Tenn., Ivan Judd and wife Carol of Harden, Ky., and Richard Judd of Terre Haute;
two children, DelRay Judd and wife Karrie of Harker Heights, Texas, and Trina (Judd)
Lunceford and husband Daniel of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Chelsea and Devan
Lunceford, and twins, Dacie Lynn and DelRay Jr.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Judd; a sister-in-law, Joann Judd;
and one infant son.He was a man who loved fishing and spending time with his family. He
never met a stranger, and could make friends with everyone he met.Visitation is 12:30 to 4
p.m. today in Thomas Funeral Home, 2200 N. 13th St. Services are 4 p.m. in the funeral
home. Burial is 9 a.m. Monday in Roselawn Memorial Park.

MECCA – Marta Deal, 59, of Apache Junction, Ariz., and formerly of Mecca, passed away on
Saturday, July 5, 2008, in her home after a battle with a lengthy illness. She was born on
June 29, 1949, in Mecca, to Loyd Keen and Winona Hoke Keen. Survivors include her
parents; her husband of 32 years, Wayne Deal; children, Harolyn Clark and Chad Eup; four
stepsons, Kevin, Larry, Rusty, and Bob Deal; a stepdaughter, Laurel Mahady; one sister,
Brenda Riley; three brothers, Mike, Tim, and Dave Keen; a very special sister-in-law, Bernice
Archer; 21 grandsons; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson. Marta loved to travel
with her husband around the United States, and they have lived in many different places and
she loved to read.Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton

Frederick, Norma Ruth    

BRAZIL — Norma Ruth Frederick, 91, of Brazil, died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday, July 12, 2008, in
St. Vincent Clay Hospital. She was born March 24, 1917, in Terre Haute, the daughter of
Alexander C. and Helen Whitmarsh Hadley. She graduated from Brazil High School with the
Class of 1935 and began a career of over 50 years as a beautician in the community. She
married Virgil A. Frederick on Jan. 7, 1997, in Holiday, Fla., and he survives. She is survived
by her husband; stepsons, Steve Frederick and wife Connie and Alva Frederick and wife
Elizabeth; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, Cynthia Hadley Larrison and
Jane Hadley Scott of New Port Richey, Fla., Billie Sue Stepp of Terre Haute and Barbara Lou
Strugar of Santee, Calif.; nephews, Thomas J. Upman of Geneva, Ill., and John Farley of
Hanover, N.H.; 24 grand-nieces and nephews; and other extended family. She was preceded
in death by her parents; her first husband, Harvey G. Upman; one sister, Marjorie Hadley;
and one brother, Frederick P. Hadley.She attended Epworth United Methodist Church and
enjoyed Circle, sewing, gardening, cooking and baking for her family and friends. Funeral
services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Moore Funeral Home, 142 N. Washington St., in Brazil,
with Pastor Greg Putnam officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Cemetery, Terre Haute. Visitation

William H. Carson, 84, of Jacksonville, N.C., and formerly of Terre Haute, died at 4 p.m.
Murial L. Payton Carson. Survivors include his companion, Dorothy Breneman; two sons, Jon
B. Carson and Jeffery A. Carson; two daughters, Joyce Ann Hopkins and Jilda Lee Lewis; a
sister, Mary Louise Archer; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services are 2
p.m. Thursday at Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home, 602 S. Seventh St., with the Rev. Bill Herb

Kisner, Robert G.   

Robert G. Kisner, 75, of West Terre Haute passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, at
Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He retired from the Winslow Scale Company after many
years of service. He was born Feb. 27, 1933, in Terre Haute to Lawrence and Evertia
Kisner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during which he was stationed in Germany. He
was a member of the American Legion Krietenstien Post and a lifetime member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 972. Survivors include his wife, Norma Kisner; a son,
Anthony Kisner of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Frances Ralston of Brownsburg; a
stepdaughter, Kim Bland; four stepsons, Robert Lowe, Jeff Lowe, Gregg Lowe, and Mark
Ross; four sisters, Wilma Allen, Martha Fennell, Mary Cuffle, and Judith Moody; four
brothers, Donald Kisner, Gerald Kisner, Kenneth Kisner, and Larry Kisner; many

Paul Wayne Marshall, 79, of Lewisville, Texas, and formerly of Terre Haute, died Tuesday,
July 15, 2008, in Lewisville. He was born on Aug. 14, 1928, in Terre Haute, to James Leroy
Marshall and Ora Madge Morey Marshall. He was retired from Public Service of Indiana. He
was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.Survivors included his wife, Ann Whitledge Marshall; one
son, Brian Marshall and his wife Sandy; one daughter, Janice Vogt; five grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his

Claude W. Wiles, 71, of Terre Haute, passed away, Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in Union
Hospital. He was born on Feb. 10, 1937, in Vigo County, to Claude J. Wiles and Vera Goldie
Apple Wiles. He worked at the Merom Power Plant and had several other jobs throughout
his lifetime. He graduated from Gerstmeyer High School, and was a veteran who served as a
U.S. Marine in the 1950s in Guam.Survivors include his loving wife, Rosemary Wiles;
children, Bruce Wiles and wife of Terre Haute, Rosemarie Norton and husband Elmer Sr. of
Terre Haute, Glenda Wagner of Terre Haute, Mina Lacks and husband Mark of Virginia,
Marla Warner and husband Donnie of Michigan, and Elmer Wiles of Terre Haute; 12
grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Wiles and wife Georgia of

Charles E. Nichols, 82, of Terre Haute, died at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, in Meadows
Manor East. He was born on Sept. 2, 1925, in Terre Haute, to Merle L. Nichols and Leona
Helton. He served in World War II infantry of Pattons Army and was employed at Anaconda
in Terre Haute. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Esther N. Romine Nichols, whom he
married in May 22, 1946; sons, Chuck E. Nichols Jr. and his wife Era and Kevin D Nichols
and his wife Cindy; two sisters, Marge Clark, Kay Bronnert and her husband Joe; four
grandchildren, Tony Nichols and his wife Cindi, Jackie Howald and her husband Matt, Shawn
Decker and Chad Decker; and three great-grandchildren, Indi Ann Nichols, Joshuah Decker
and Kaleigh Decker.He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ezra Nichols
and Warren Nichols; and one son, William Nichols.He was a lifelong member of Kings
Highway Tabernacle, and a lifelong member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 972, Services are

Texas; stepdaughters, Linda Edington of West Terre Haute and Paula Bartosh of Avon;
several stepgrandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. Clara was a member of

Jennie F. Kendall, 92, of Danville, Ind., and formerly of Terre Haute, died Thursday, July 17,
2008, in Hendricks Regional Health Center in Danville. She was born on Dec. 25, 1915, in
Corona, Kan., to Frank Cuvelier and Erma Durr Cuvelier. Jennie was a full time homemaker
as well as the owner and manager of a large boarding house in Indianapolis for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Woodrow Kendall, whom she married
June 1, 1934.Survivors include her son, Lawrence Wayne Kendall of Terre Haute;
daughters, Patricia Ann Dunn of Terre Haute and Margi L. Pratt and her husband Larry of
Avon; sister, Erma Adams of Terre Haute; and grandchildren, Jim Dunn of Plainfield, Jeff
Pratt of Denver, Greg Pratt of Fishers, and Tami Pratt of Denver; seven
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband; an infant son, John William Kendall; brothers, Frank Cuvelier and
Fred Cuvelier; and a sister, Mary Daley. Jennie was an avid gardener, loving flowers, birds,
nature, and raising African Violets. She loved bingo, arts and crafts, and family

Mary Edith “Honey” Snider, 84, of Terre Haute, died Friday evening, July 18, 2008. She was
born Sept. 10, 1923, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Edward and Vera Strachan. She was
preceded in death by her husbands, Robert R. Bennett and Denis Snider; and by her son,
Robert R. “Chip” Bennett, Jr.Honey was a 1941 graduate of Wiley High School in Terre
Haute. She attended Indiana University and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
She also attended Tulane University in New Orleans. She was a member of First
Congregational Church and the Country Club of Terre Haute, where she served as
chairman of the Ladies 18 Hole Golf League. She was a past member of Alpha Chi Omega
Alumni Association, Indiana University Foundation and the Indiana University Alumni
Association.She was a very loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed her golf and
bridge and being with her wonderful, caring friends.Survivors include her daughter and son-
in-law, Holly Christine Sanders and Bob Sanders of Terre Haute; her son and daughter-in-
law, Edward Strachan Bennett and Jean Bennett of St. Charles, Mo.; five grandchildren, Katy

Cotillion Nursing Home in Robinson, Ill. She was born June 7, 1926, in Portland Mills, to John
Spencer Westbrook and Nelle Kilburn. She was co-owner of George’s Auto Repair. Her
husband, George Frerichs, preceded her in death in 1992. Survivors include a son, James
C. Frerichs and wife Robbie; two daughters, Mary Lee Ofsansky and husband Michael, and
Rebecca Christenberry and husband Donald of Willow Hill, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, Paula and
Tim Richard of Robinson, James Frerichs Jr. and wife Tammy, Amy and Charlie Kennedy,
Ricky Pirtle, Michael Ofsansky III, and David Ofsansky, all of Terre Haute, Spencer C.

Mankin, Steve Lee    

Steve Lee Mankin, 61, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, July 20, 2008. He was born April 9,
1947, in Terre Haute to Raymond Lee Mankin and Rachel Elizabeth Cobb Mankin. He was a
U.S. Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War, and was the recipient of the Vietnam
Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. He worked as a correctional officer for the Rockville
Correctional Facility. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and an all-around outdoorsman.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, and Sons of the American Revolution. He
is survived by his sons, S. Lee Mankin, Jr. and his wife Lynn of Lebanon, and Todd R.
Mankin of Terre Haute; stepgrandson, Aaron Morgan of Cory; stepgreat-grandson, A.J.
Morgan of Cory; sister, Raylene Nielsen and husband Chris of Herrin, Ill.; brother, Kelly
Mankin and wife Janet of Gillette, Wy.; nieces, Elizabeth Nielsen of Herrin, and Sarah
Haskins and husband Josh of Los Angeles; and nephew, Joe Mankin of Los Angeles. He was
preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Friday at Roselawn Funeral

Ruth Cain, 64, of Terre Haute passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008, in Southwood
Rehabilitation Center, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 17, 1944, in
Red Jacket, W.Va., to William Ball Sr. and Stella Daniels Ball. She married Jack M. Cain, and
he preceded her in July 2002. Survivors include two daughters, Michele Rena Ferando and
husband Derek of Terre Haute, and Jacqueline Smith and husband Ernest of Brazil; one
son, Bill Cain and his wife Tracy of Bloomington; sister, Nell Bee and her husband John of
Salt Lake City, and their children, Randy Bee, John Bee, Ruth Bee, and Denise Lagalle;
sister, Jackie Workman of Warfield, and her children, Linda and Ronald; sister-in-law,
Gilberta Ball of Marsilles, lll., and her children, David Ball and Debra Thompson;
grandchildren, Marlena Pohlman, Katherine Davis, Francesca Ferando, Jessica Smith,
Jordan Ruth Smith, and Laila Cain; great-grandchildren, Theodore Pohlman Jr. and
Elizabeth Pohlman; also her special friends, Beth McKee Olson, Ruby Blauvelt, Sue Orlando,

Dorothy Jean Norder Bennett, 75, of Terre Haute, passed away in her home Tuesday, July
22, 2008. She was born on March 19, 1933, in Watseka, Ill., to Jacob and Catherine Eiler
Norder. She graduated from Watseka Community High School. Dorothy worked at several
different places throughout her life, and retired from IMC where she did data entry work. She
was a loyal and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She has left behind a daughter,
Roberta Dean of Terre Haute; two brothers, Reinhandt Norder of Cresent City, Ill., and
LeRoy Norder; two sisters, Elaine Hustedt of Watseka, and Chris Meier and husband Gilbert
of St. Louis; grandchildren, Robert L. Dean and wife Sandi, William E. Dean and wife Candi,
Candy Dean, Charles Michael Dean and wife Erica; great-grandchildren, Christina Yaw,
Josh Dean, Camisha Barnett, Charles Michael Dean II., Dylan A. Dean, Nicole Taylor, Eric
Taylor, Tasha Taylor and Shawn Wooten and wife Heather. Other survivors include great-
great-grandchildren, Jubilee and Liam Dean, Kinnidi Wooten, Kira Mae Wooten, Tyler
Wooten, Gaige Burkhard, Zoe Roberts, and Aiden Harkness; a special nephew, Mark
Houston; and several other nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents;
and her loving husband, Robert L “Cookie” Bennett, who passed away in 2003.She loved
her loyal dog, Prince, and loved gardening. She was a member of the Eagles Ladies

Beecher Jr., Samuel E.    

Samuel E. Beecher Jr., 89, former attorney and resident of Terre Haute, died Thursday, July
17, 2008, in Milton, Pa., succumbing to several long-term illnesses. He was born Aug. 1,
1918, in Terre Haute, to Samuel E. Beecher and Katherine Swope. Mr. Beecher was a 1936
graduate of Garfield High School, and president of the National Honor Society at the time of
his graduation. He went on to Indiana State Teachers College for pre-law from 1936 to
1938, whereupon he transferred to the Indiana Law School in Indianapolis. He graduated
with his Bachelor of Law degree in 1941, and was valedictorian of his class. Mr. Beecher
was admitted to the Indiana Bar Association July 1941, and was later admitted to practice
before the United States Supreme Court in April 1955. Until his retirement in February 2002,
Mr. Beecher was a fourth-generation attorney in Terre Haute. After admittance to the
Indiana Bar Association, and until he established his own private practice in 1947, he
practiced law with his father, having served shortly on active duty with the U.S. Army from
May 1942 to August 1942, then as a member of the Indiana State Guard Reserve from
October 1942 until August 1945.Between 1942 and 1947, Mr. Beecher worked also at the
Concan Ordnance Company, a war industry, and for the Stran Steel Division of Great Lakes
Steel Corporation. Between 1945 and 1947, he worked as an associate attorney for the
United States Veterans’ Administration.Starting in 1952, and for 22 years thereafter, Mr.
Beecher was secretary for the Terre Haute Bar Association, and he served as a member of
the House of Delegates and as parliamentarian for the Indiana State Bar Association. Mr.
Beecher was active in public affairs. He prepared Articles of Incorporation for the Wayne
Newton American Legion Post 346, becoming a charter member himself, creating the first
World War II-related American Legion Post established in Indiana. He served on the Board
of Indiana State Girl Scout Council to assist in merging the Illinois and Indiana Councils to
form the Covered Bridge Council. During the 1960s, Mr. Beecher served on the Continental
Board of the Unitarian Universalist Church of America and assisted in establishing the “Black
Affairs Council.” In 1970, he received the Wabash Valley Labor Council’s “Distinguished
Citizen Award” as a friend of labor after he assisted with incorporating the Eugene V. Debs
Foundation. For many years, he served on the Boards of the Vigo County Humane Society
and Vigo County Red Cross. He also served as president of the Terre Haute Community
Theater, as well as being cast in several plays.He was a guest instructor from 1966 through
1971 at Indiana State University, teaching criminal law. From 1966 until 1978, he also taught
“Law and Banking” for the American Institute of Banking to bankers from Illinois and Indiana.
Mr. Beecher served as legal advisor to the Terre Haute Police Department from 1974 to
1979. Mr. Beecher was an avid private pilot for many years. He prepared the incorporation
papers for Sky King Airport for his longtime friend, Herman Brown.He was married to
Margaret Mitchell, in July 1941, and had three children. Mr. Beecher was preceded in death
by his son, CWO Quentin R. Beecher (US Army, 1st Air Cavalry Division; MIA in Vietnam
June 11, 1967, subsequently declared dead June 11, 1973); and by his sister, Bettie
Katherine Beecher Wright, in September 1988. Survivors include his sister, Rosalie Beecher
of Milton.; two daughters, Roberta A. Brown of Milton and Elizabeth K. (Libby) Schultz of
Broomfield, Colo.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.Interment will be in
Roselawn Cemetery in North Terre Haute, preceded by a memorial service, the date to be
announced. In lieu of flowers for the memorial service, his daughters request donations be
made to the Quentin R. Beecher Memorial Scholarship Fund at Indiana State University.

FARMERSBURG — Fern E. Patrick, 87, of Seymour, passed away at 8 p.m. Wednesday,
July 23, 2008, in Lutheran Community Home. Fern was born in Farmersburg, on Sept. 12,
1920, the daughter of John and Mae Lucas Jewell. On May 17, 1941, she married Donald E.
Patrick and he preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 1995. Survivors include her children, Mike
Patrick and Rick Patrick; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and brother, Harry
Jewell.Services are 7 p.m. today in Lutheran Community Home with Pastor Darrel Geitz
officiating. Visitation is 4 p.m. until services in the community home. An Eastern Star service

BRAZIL — Dallas Clyde Meneely, 91, of Brazil, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2008, in his
residence. He was born April 12, 1917, in Vigo County, to William Henry Meneely and Emma
Whippo Meneely. Dallas was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lillian Baker
Meneely. Dallas was a lifelong farmer and worked as a carpenter for Quaker Maid.
Survivors include three sons, Dallas Allen Meneely and his wife Anne of St. Louis, Dennis
Meneely and his wife Linda of North Potomac, Md., and Joseph Meneely and his wife Mary
of Lebanon, Ind.; two daughters, Jacqueline Crowder and her husband Michael of Terre
Haute, and Mary Walton and her husband Frank of Farmersburg; three sisters, Mary Payne
of Hot Springs, Ark., Gladys Brinson and Doris Keiser, both of Bradenton, Fla.; 13
grandchildren, Kevin Walton and his wife Tammy, Kyle Walton and his wife Janelle, Kristen
Walton, Miranda Martin and her husband Ross, Jessica Wayton and her husband Geoff,

Arnold Noel, 71, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 11:23 p.m. Wednesday, July 23,
2008, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He retired from Pillsbury after many years of
service. He was born Nov. 16, 1936, in Crane, to Robert William Noel and Edria Fox Noel.
Survivors include his children, Samantha Nichols and her husband Steve of Carbon, Harvey
Barnhart and his wife Connie, Debra Fagg and her husband Tom, and Dennis Barnhart and
his wife Nikki, all of West Terre Haute, and Barbara Lee and her husband Bill of Seelyville; a
daughter-in-law, Nancy Barnhart of West Terre Haute; two brothers, Harold Noel of
Farmersburg and Earl Noel and his wife Darlene of Terre Haute; a sister, Vicki Bollinger and
her husband Dennis of Terre Haute; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and

Helen M. (Tindall) Rottmann, 91, of Terre Haute, died at 1:32 a.m. Sunday, July 27, 2008, in
1917, the daughter of William Frank and Anna Smith Tindall. She had retired from Terre
Haute Typewriter Company in 1995, where she worked with her husband, Kenneth and her
son, David for many years. Survivors include her son David Rottmann and his wife Debbie
of Terre Haute; two grandsons and their wives, Kenneth and Amy Rottmann of Indianapolis
and Tom and Amanda Rottmann of Terre Haute; and two great-grandchildren, Landon and
Meadow.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her sister, Ruth

of the Daughters of the Nile, where she served as treasurer for many years and a member

Days in 1982. She was a volunteer in Terre Haute Regional Hospital gift shop and had
helped start bingo night once a month at Wyndmoor. She loved her family, gardening,
reading, listening to music and made her home a welcome refuge to many stray
cats.Funeral services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill
Drive, with Pastor Fred Harrison officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is
11 a.m. until services Wednesday. For those who choose, memorial contributions in her
memory may be made to American Cancer Society, Terre Haute Humane Shelter, Heavens
Harmony, or Zorah Shrine. All envelopes are available at the funeral home.
