James A. Duggins

TERRE HAUTE — James A. Duggins, 72, of Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord on Jan.
5, 2012, while at home. Jim was born in Louisville, Ky., on March 24, 1939, to Opal
Mathers Duggins and Claude Duggins. His father was a butcher and owned a grocery
store; his mother, a homemaker who cared for their seven children. Jim was the youngest
child and the apple of his mother’s eye. The family moved to Terre Haute when Jim was a
child.

Jim was faithfully married to his best friend, Paula R. Duggins, whom he met at Eighth
Ave. Baptist Church, where they are both members. They celebrated 45 years of wedded
bliss this past September 2011. Jim always looked forward to their annual August
vacation to Michigan. He was an adoring and patient husband. Jim was the father to one

numerous things, he taught her how to ride a bike, how to drive a car and to never take
anything for granted. Jim was an amazing and attentive Pap to one grandson, Zachary J.

part of. He particularly enjoyed filming his grandson’s sporting events and special
activities and has given us countless hours of memories by doing so.

Service, during every tax season and personally prepared taxes for family and friends for
many years. Just before being diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, Jim began working

Marjorie Ruberta Rowe Latta

TERRE HAUTE — Marjorie Ruberta Rowe Latta was born on Jan. 15, 1921, in Terre
Haute, Ind. Her parents, Rushton Marfel “Mart” Rowe and Orbie Hudson Rowe, lived on
upper 11th Street. Mart worked in the family business, A. Rowe and Sons Meat Packing.
A Rowe and Sons had been in operation since 1870. Marjorie would be Vice President of
Rowe Packing and one of the last owners with her brother and sister when it closed
operations in 1969. When Marjorie was 10 years old, she was one of two children, and
probably the last in Terre Haute, to become infected with Small Pox and nearly died.
When Marjorie was a sophomore at Garfield High School her mother, Orbie, was for a
second time diagnosed with a brain tumor and subsequently died during surgery in St.
Louis. This would become one of the great turning points of her life.

In 1939 Marjorie graduated from Garfield High School. In the fall of that year, she went to
a Halloween Party and met a young man by the name of Dennis Latta. Dennis’ family
operated a restaurant, tourist cottages and a gas station in Seelyville, Ind. Within a year
they were united in marriage at All Saints Episcopal Church in Indianapolis. Marjorie was
soon to become a mother as well as a partner in the family business in Seelyville. Dennis
[Denny] was born in 1948, Martin in 1954, and Orbie in 1957. Marjorie was to take care of
and love several animals over the years. In time, there were three horses, two burrows
and several other animals attached to the Latta family. One of her great rescue missions
was her care of Rags, a small scruffy dog. Rags was so absolutely ugly that he was
beautiful. Marjorie loved to travel. One great memory of these years for her was the
vacations that they took with Uncle Howard and Aunt Bertha Schlatter. The yearly trips to
Yellowstone and the Rockies were memorable. Later in life she was able to go to Israel.
Her observation about the Holy Land; It was dry, brown, and hilly!

Marjorie was a fairly accomplished musician. As a girl she was a member of St. Stephen’s
Episcopal Church Choir in Terre Haute. For a time she was the paid soloist at the
Christian Scientist Church in Seelyville. In the early 50’s she sang in several area
musicals. She always said that her favorite was Brigadoon. From 1953 until 1967 she
attended Cloverland Evangelical United Brethren Church and was active providing many
solos and music programs. She loved to play the piano and being always humorous when
asked to play she would begin by playing “Ah Sweet Mystery of Life” or “I’ll be loving You”
and she would sing like Nelson Eddy and Jeanette Macdonald. Marjorie was a Cub Scout
leader. She was an active parent at Seelyville and Lost Creek Elementary.

Marjorie loved and collected old family photos and would carry several albums to family
reunions. It was lots of fun looking at the photos and talking about old times. Along this
line she enjoyed providing entertainment for family parties and reunions. Marjorie was
from a generation of women who could walk into a kitchen and from a few ingredients
cook at tasty and nutritious meal. When the kids asked her what she was cooking she
would humorously say, “cat heads”. She was a great hostess. Often at the Latta
household, friends and neighbors would drop in. They were always welcomed with
refreshments and good conversation.

In 1970 Marjorie bought a farm on Bolton Road north of Terre Haute. She would live
there for over 35 years. It was on Bolton Road that she would find many lifetime friends.
The Bolton Road community was very loving and supporting. She had many happy
memories of this period of her life.

Marjorie had three lifetime friends, Barbara Gemmecke, Janet Scholar, and her sister,
Hilda Mary Chernay. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rushton Marfel “Mart”
and Orbie Hudson Rowe; her brother, Andrew Rowe; and her sisters, Vera [Rowe]
Sumansky, and Hilda Mary [Rowe] Chernay. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-
law, Dennis James and Mary K. Latta of Vincennes and Martin Clifford and Denise Latta
of Seelyville; daughter and son-in-law, Orbie and Donald Bryan of Seelyville; and by
numerous grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Services will be Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at 1 p.m. French Funeral Home, 421 E. National
Ave., in Brazil. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. with service to follow. The Rev.
Dennis J. Latta will officiate. Marjorie’s grandsons, Jeremiah, Matthew, Nicholas, Daniel,
Jeffrey and James will be pallbearers. Please bring your stories and reminiscences of
