Shoaf, Phyllis Yvonne  

Phyllis Yvonne Shoaf, 72, of Indianapolis, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009. She was
born March 24, 1937 to the late Fred and Zelma Bach in Terre Haute. Phyllis is survived
by her children, Teresa (Allen) Keough, Joni (Jonathon) Clark, Penny Shepard, Susan
Shoaf, Marilyn Shoaf, Rachel Bunton and Michael Shoaf; siblings, MaryAnn (Norm)
Neiswinger, Robert (Tinka) Bach and Leo (Barbara) Bach; grandchildren, Jason, Amanda,
Tony, Velvet, Gregory, Kyla, Joshua and Sammy Joe. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, at
Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Southport Chapel, 7520 Madison Ave.,
Indianapolis, IN 46227. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until time of services. Burial will be at
Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute.  
Bergherm, Rick Dean    

Rick Dean Bergherm, 57, of North Terre Haute lost his courageous battle with cancer on
Oct. 29, 2009, in his residence. He was born in Terre Haute on April 17, 1952 to James
Floyd Bergherm and Mary Deakins Bergherm. He had worked at Great Scot for over 16
years and Columbia House for over 16 years as well. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and
spending time with his grandchildren and his beloved dog Sissy. He was preceded in death
by his parents; his daughter, Nancy Bergherm and his brother, Bill Bergherm. He is
survived by his wife, Linda Silvers Bergherm of North Terre Haute, whom he married on
June 25, 1971; his son, James Bergherm of North Terre Haute; his daughter, Mariah Utter
and her husband Denny of North Terre Haute; two sisters, Carolyn Funkhouser and her
husband Clyde of Terre Haute and Beulah Tomes of Davenport, Fla.; four grandchildren,
Kourtney Utter, Austin Utter, James Levi Bergherm and Savannah Bergherm; his
mother-in-law, Delores Reynolds of North Terre Haute; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark
and Jean Reynolds of Georgia, Jerry and Leah Owens and Jim and Janice Reynolds both
of Arizona, Russell and Mary Silvers of Terre Haute and Steve and Edie Silvers of Texas;
several nieces and nephews and cousins; two special nieces, Tammy Jones and Linda
Jacobs. Special thanks to Marty and Lia Fortner for their loving support. Services are 1
p.m. Monday at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St. Terre Haute, IN 47804 with the
Rev. Gene Jeffers officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire contributions

Doan Sr., Herbert Allison    

Herbert Allison Doan Sr., 76, of Terre Haute, died early Thursday morning, Oct. 29, 2009,
in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was a machine technician for Midland Glass
Company for 24 years and also worked for the Terre Haute Street Department for 12 years
before his retirement in 1997. He was born March 18, 1933, in Fifield, Wis., to Herbert
Albert Doan Sr. and Helena Clark Doan.Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Lydia
Joan Bolin Doan; two daughters, Lisa Weatherford of Austin, Texas and Lori E. Carson of
Terre Haute; four sons, Herbert Allison Doan Jr. and his wife Ann of Evansville, Ind., and
Bradley Doan and his wife Marsha, Brett Doan and Brian Clark Doan, all of Terre Haute; a
brother, William N. Doan Sr. of Terre Haute; 10 grandchildren, Paul E. Tackett III, Bradley
S. Doan Jr., Aston Doan-Carson, Herbert A. Doan III, Zachery S. Doan, Brett T. Doan Jr.,
Justin A. Doan, Chelsea Seiter-Weatherford, Madison Doan and Breanna Doan; seven
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his
parents; four sisters, Marguerite Smith, Mary Rice, JoAnne McDuffie and Nancy Bumpus; a
half brother, Herbert Albert Doan Jr.; and two half sisters, Maxine Butler and Wilma
Thomas.Herbert was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served on the carrier, U.S.S.
Boxer 51, and was a member of American Legion Post 346. He was a loyal Green Bay
Packer fan and was a devoted husband and father.Funeral services will be conducted at
1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th
Street, with Pastor Rick Swan officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
Visitation is scheduled for Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. The family kindly

Roehm Jr., George W.    

George W. Roehm Jr., 89, lifetime Terre Haute resident, passed away peacefully on Oct.
27, 2009, at Cobblestone Crossings Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on
April 18, 1920, to George W. Roehm Sr. and Emma (Clemenz) Roehm. As a young person,
he attended St. Margaret Mary elementary school and graduated from the former Honey
Creek High School. He was employed by Roehm Brothers Construction, before beginning
his career at Wabash Fiber Box Company, where he was a maintenance mechanic
specializing in servicing Clark Industrial Equipment. His 48 years of employment with
Wabash Fiber was interrupted by military service during World War II. He was a member of
the 489th Air Service Group and was a participant in the Normandy Invasion. He was was
gardening and sharing his produce. In 2000, he received special recognition from the
Indiana Blood Center for outstanding community service on having made 77 donations of
blood. He was a loving husband to his wife of 59 years, Maurine (Morris) Roehm, who
preceded him in death, on Oct. 28, 2004, and was a loving father. He was known for the
generosity of his time and talents to help others. He was a life member of the
Lawton-Byrum Veteran of Foreign Wars 972. He is survived by his son George W. Roehm
III; four daughters, Helen Boyer and husband David, Charlotte Roehm Pickens, Susan
Shaw and husband Michael, and Margaret McCain and husband John. His grandchildren
are Dr. Michael Boyer and his wife Dr. Soheila Boyer, J.D. Boyer and his wife Amy, Christie
Pyatt and her husband Rob, Jennifer Sears and her husband Justin, Michael Shaw and his
wife Lauren, William McCain, and Lizzy McCain. His great-grandchildren are Alyssa Sears,
Mickey Floyd, Abby Boyer, Aliyeh Boyer, Rory Pyatt, Asher Pyatt, Ashtyn Shaw and Avah
Shaw. He also is survived by two sisters-in-law, Maryanne Roehm and Patricia Morris; and
a brother-in-law, Frank Pearce. There are also numerous nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, Helen Roehm, Virginia Hauer, Julia
Eaton, Esther Garvin, Ethel McCammon, Ruth Starkey, Lucille Lidster, Eugene 'Bud'
Roehm, Paul Roehm and Joseph Roehm. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7,
2009, at DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, with the Rev. Dana Newhouse
officiating. Calling hours will be on Saturday from noon until services. Burial will be at
Roselawn Memorial Park with VFW 972 conducting graveside military honors. For those
who desire, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Catholic Charities
of Terre Haute.  
Beebe, Betty Jo    

Betty Jo Beebe, 78, of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 31, 2009, at
Meadows Manor North Nursing Home. She was born Aug. 23, 1931, in North Terre Haute
to Joseph Goda and Eva Pearl (Sturm) Goda.Betty graduated from Otter Creek High
School, and later worked as a dishwasher at Wabash College in Crawfordsville. She loved
doing ceramics, classical music, and artwork. She loved creative things and was very full of
life.She is survived by two sons, Chester Beebe and wife Linda, and Samuel Beebe and
wife Cindy; grandchildren, George Beebe, Billy Beebe, both of Tulsa, Okla., Bobby Wilkins
and Robin Wilkins, both of Eureka Springs, Arks.; a brother, Warren Goda of Plainfield;
and several nieces and nephews.Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband,
George Beebe; and two sons, James and Gary. No services have been scheduled. Betty
will be buried in Roselawn Memorial Park next to her mother. Thomas Funeral Home
assisted in making the arrangements.  
Gallion, Virginia Liehr    

Virginia Liehr Gallion, 87, of Terre Haute, died Saturday morning, Oct. 31, 2009, in Union
Hospital. She was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Terre Haute, to Joseph H. Liehr and Gertrude
Boland Liehr. Her husband of 64 years, Ralph O. Gallion, preceded her in death on March
7, 2007.Survivors include her son, James Joseph Gallion and his wife, Mary Dowell Gallion
of Newburgh; two daughters, Ruth Ann McCullough and her husband Michael McCullough
of Terre Haute, and Marylou Garloch and her husband Dale E. Garloch of Terre Haute;
and seven grandchildren, Shari Gallion Mautz and her husband Kenneth Mautz of
Newburgh, James G. Gallion and his wife Lorissa Babb Gallion of Evansville, Patricia
McCullough Lynch of Terre Haute, Janet McCullough Johnson and her husband Ronald
Johnson of Fort Drum, N.Y., Eric McCullough and his wife Angie Richardson McCullough of
Terre Haute, Bradley Garloch of Fishers, and Lori Garloch Morales and her husband Juan
of Indianapolis. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren, Ryan McCullough and his wife
Kaelyn, Abigail Lynch, Kayli Mautz, Cameron Mautz, Brandon Johnson, Matthew Johnson,
Drew Babb, Dane Gallion, Mary Gallion, Kelsie McCullough and Zachary McCullough; a
sister-in-law, Kaythern Baker Liehr of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. She
also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Edward Liehr and John Richard
Liehr; one sister, Mary E. Liehr-Klotz-Evans; a grandson-in-law, Timothy Lynch; a
sister-in--law, Evelyn Latta Liehr; and two brothers-in-law, Thomas J. Klotz Sr., and Melvin
E. Evans Sr.Virginia was a graduate of Central High School, and was a member of St. Ann
Catholic Church and the Women's Guild of St. Ann.Prayers will begin at 9:15 a.m.

followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ann Church, with Father Darvin

Basden, Loran F.   

Loran F. Basden, 90, of West Lafayette, passed away Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at St.
Elizabeth Hospital. She was born March 26, 1919, in Shelburn, to Hershall and Gerthie
(Walters) McCammon. She was a former member of First Assembly of God Church in Terre
Haute, where she was a Sunday School teachers for over 25 years. She loved any activity
having to do with crafts including painting and crocheting. She also was in charge of
running a nursing school for over 20 years.She is preceded in death by her parents; her
loving husband of 57 years, Howard Basden; a daughter, Carolyn S. Easton; and several
siblings. Survivors include her two children, Jack Basden and wife Kathie of West
Lafayette, and Bonnie Basden of West Terre Haute; 11 grandchildren; 26
great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 2 p.m. Friday at
Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with Pastor Dick Smith officiating. Burial will
follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is noon until services Friday.  
Frey, Ruby Hamblen Stableton    

Ruby Hamblen Stableton Frey, 94, of Terre Haute, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Sunday, Nov.
1, 2009, at The Waters of Clinton; She was born to Elzic and Mattie Hamblen on June 22,
1915, in Laurel County, Ky. She is survived by one brother, Donnie Hamblen; one sister,
Beulah Somers; three grandchildren, Brad and Jill Stott, Brian and Debra Stott, and Ben
and Tricia Stott; eight great-grandchildren, Graham, Julietta, Dmitry, Svetlana, Reece,
Tyler, Mason, all of these are Stott, and Rosa Kate Bowers and husband Mark; three
great-great-grandchildren, Casey, Loagan, and Milana, all three are Bowers. She also had
two stepsons, Eric Frey and Bruce Frey and their families. She was preceded in death by
her first husband, Mack Stableton; and her second husband, Harry Frey; her parents, Elzic
and Mattie Hamblen; one sister, Irene Morris; four brothers, Cecil, Earl, Carl and Connie, all
of them are Hamblen; one daughter, Marilyn June Stott; and a grandson, Joel Brett Stott.
She was a member of the Woman's Department Club, Order of the Eastern Star, and the
Oberlander Club. She retired as co/owner of Stableton Iron and Gift Shop. She loved
working in her yard, and she collected antiques her whole life.Services are 11 a.m.
Thursday at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 Lafayette Ave. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m.
today. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that

Girton, Doris Ellen   

BRAZIL — Doris Ellen Girton, 91, of Brazil, died Sunday morning, Nov. 1, 2009, at her
residence. She was born Aug. 9, 1918, in Brazil, to George W. LaBier and Bertha Doan
LaBier. She graduated from Brazil High School and attending secretary school at Indiana
State University. She was a homemaker, who also had worked for 18 years in the law offices
of attorney, Eugene Weaver. She was married to Richard R. Girton, who preceded her in
death July 14, 1959. She was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority, and the First Presbyterian
Church of Brazil ,where she had served as a trustee and elder. She also had served as a
board member of the Clay Civic Memorial Foundation. She enjoyed playing bridge and
golfing with friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, George LaBier;
and two sisters, Mildred Hill and Inez Goettse. She is survived by one son, Jon Ren Girton
and wife Mary Jane of Brazil; grandsons, Kevin Girton and wife Kathy, Steven Girton and
wife Susan, and Bradley Girton, all of Brazil; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-
grandchild. Funeral services will be noon Thursday at Moore Funeral Home, 142 N.
Washington St., with the Rev. Gary Scroggins officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn

Cobblestone Crossings. He was born Sept. 12, 1929, in Terre Haute, to William Glenn
Stewart and Amy Daphne Taylor Stewart. He was retired from TMX Trucking, and was the
former owner of the Gateway Café. He also owned and managed several rental properties in
Terre Haute. He enjoyed sharing his love of music and dancing with friends and family, and
was actively involved in collecting and restoring antique automobiles. He was an avid fan of
all auto racing venues, enjoyed boating and camping, and was a dog lover. He was a
William "Bill" Stewart, 80, of Terre Haute, passed away Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at
Cobblestone Crossings. He was born Sept. 12, 1929, in Terre Haute, to William Glenn
Stewart and Amy Daphne Taylor Stewart. He was retired from TMX Trucking, and was the

Brickey, Charles James    

Charles James Brickey, 81, of Cloverdale, passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2009,
at his residence. He was born May 28, 1928, in Terre Haute, to Issac Brickey and Bessie
Knight Brickey. He was retired from JI Case. Survivors include his wife, Edith Brickey; three
daughters, Phyllis Rogers, Marilyn Howard and Brenda Harris; four sons, John Woll, Dennis
Brickey, Glen Evans and Charles Evans; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He
was a veteran of the Naval Reserve.Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at
Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 N. Lafayette Ave. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Hackl, Doris J.   

Doris J. Hackl, 80, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 5:58 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in
Union Hospital. She was the owner/operator of Grandma Joy's Restaurant until 1986. She
was famous for her homemade pies and yeast rolls. In 1993, along with her son,
daughter-in-law, and husband opened the Palmer House Restaurant and Motel on North 3rd
Street. They later sold it in 1999. She also was an accountant, Justice of the Peace, and real
include her grandchildren, Brandy Ewing and her husband Mike, Hank Palmer and his fiancé
Ashley Cooper and Tommy and Lisa Hackl; great-grandchildren, Kaylie and Logan Ewing,
Kaia Palmer, and little Johnny Hackl; her stepson, John Hackl; and her daughter-in-law, Eva
Palmer; and many, many nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends. She was
preceded in death by her two sons, William Lee in 1957 and Perry Lee Palmer in 2005; her
husband, Hal Hackl; her former husband and friend, Ed Meehan; her brothers, Roy, Lloyd,
William "B.J.", and Richard Joy, Don Trout; and a sister, Helen Taylor. Funeral services are
10:30 a.m. Friday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute, with

Dorothy M. Stanley, 85, of Terre Haute, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, in her home.
She was born on Nov. 29, 1923, in Vigo County, to Anna and Harry Webb. She was a
homemaker. She was a volunteer at Union Hospital and a member of Ladies Auxiliary Post
104 American Legion.Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Roberts and husband James
of Terre Haute; two sons, Kenneth Stanley and wife Patricia of Brownsburg and Michael
Stanley and wife Robin of Indianapolis; two brothers, Joseph Webb and Ernest Webb; two
sisters, Norma Kautz and Mary Alice Stanley; 13 grandchildren; several great and
great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband, John Stanley; two sons, John (Rick) Stanley and David

Carrico, Donald W.   

Donald W. Carrico, 90, of Terre Haute, and formerly of Staunton, Ind., died Nov. 5, 2009. He
was a retired ISU employee, World War II veteran, and graduate of Staunton High School
class of 1937, where he was a star athlete. Mr. Carrico was called to service in the infantry
and military police on Dec. 29, 1941, and honorably discharged in January 1946. He was
also a Deacon and Trustee of the former Westminster Presbyterian Church. Donald was the
beloved husband of Pauline for 68 years; dedicated father of Donna Carrico Staats and her
husband Michael; devoted Grampy to granddaughter Dr. Natalie Staats Reiss and husband
Michael, and granddaughter, Nicole Staats Polsky and husband Ethan. He was also the
much loved great-grandfather to McKenna Emerson and Aidan Michael Reiss. Private
graveside services will be conducted Monday. Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. today

Cecelia L. Jennings, 92, of Fairfield, Ohio, and formerly of Terre Haute, passed away Friday,
Nov. 6, 2009, in Fairfield. She was born Oct. 14, 1917, in Terre Haute, to Walter A. Bridges
and Mainetta Dahlen Bridges. She was a former office manager for Dahlen Roofing and
Guttering, and a homemaker. Her husband, Clarence E. Jennings, preceded her in
death.She is survived by a son, Clarence Jennings Jr. and his wife Paula of Terre Haute; two
daughters, Terri Calvert of Chicago, and Susan Schermer and her husband Bill of Fairfield;
a brother, Richard Bridges of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Michael Jennings and his
partner Loretta Roberts, Spencer Hobson, Edward Schermer, and Aarin Calvert and his wife
Jennifer; and one great-grandson, Michael.Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of
Memories at Roselawn Memorial Park, with Pastor Marilyn Smith officiating. Burial will follow

Cox, Frances L.    

CLINTON — Frances L. Cox, 91, of Clinton, passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 8,
2009, at The Waters in Clinton. She was born Jan. 22, 1918, in Vermillion County. She
married Charles Robert Cox on Oct. 31, 1935, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 22,
1998.Frances is survived by two daughters, Junis J. Kashon and Ronita J. Vorek; two
grandsons, Jeffery P. Purcell and wife Mary Jane, and Mark C. Kashon; two great-grandsons;
two great-granddaughters; one stepgreat-granddaughter; two great-great-grandsons; and
several nieces and nephews.Private family services have been scheduled. Burial will be in
Roselawn Memorial Park, next to her loving husband. Roselawn Funeral Home assisted in
making the arrangements.  
Scamihorn, Jean Ann    

Jean Ann Scamihorn, 64, of Terre Haute, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Terre Haute

husband Scott; one brother, John Stanton III and his wife Virginia; 11 grandchildren, Alexis
Summers, Allison Summers, Chelsie Elkins, Scott Elkins Jr., Jocelyn Ash, Jerry Ash Jr.,
Lauren Norman, Ashley Norman, Sheldon Norman, Jacob Norman, and Cedric Norman; and
great-grandchildren, Hailey Brewer and Caleb Phipps. She was preceded in death by her
parents; and her husband, James H. Scamihorn.Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at

Frank E Morin Jr., 88, of Terre Haute, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at 5 a.m., in his
residence. He was born June 3, 1921, to Frank and Estella (Johnson) Morin.Survivors
include his wife, Helen (Meehan) Morin, whom he married Sept. 18, 1940; daughters, Sharon
Reynolds of Terre Haute, Nancy Jackson and husband Phillip of Merrillville, and Rosemary
Milner and husband Bill of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren, Lori Usher and husband Scott
of Merrillville, Frank Reynolds and wife Heather, and Scottie Reynolds, all of Florida, Carrie
Chiado and husband Greg, Bill Milner and wife Lisa, Jarrod Milner, and Nicholas Reynolds, all
of Terre Haute; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both parents; a
son-in-law, Tom Reynolds; four sisters, Marguerite Egan, Helen Gilbert, Lucille Howerton and
Mary Smith; three brothers, Herbert Morin, Edward Morin and Joseph Morin; and a half
brother, Vernal Morin. Frank served in the U.S. Navy. He was employed by MAB Paints
(formerly Smith-Alsop), from where he retired after 35 years of service. He was a member of
the American Legion and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He enjoyed yard work, home

Mrs. Margaret M. Wiggins, 89, of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, in the
Union Hospital. She was born on Feb. 19, 1920, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Walter
Thomas Boyd and Minnie (Clark) Boyd. She married Everett E. Wiggins Sr. and he preceded
her in death. Margaret was a homemaker and also had worked as a salad cook for Indiana
State University. She had attended the Senior Citizen Center. Her hobbies included traveling,
euchre, picnics and loving all her grandchildren.Survivors include four boys, Everett Wiggins
Jr. and wife Pauline of Carmel, Victor Wiggins Sr. and wife Rosemary and Perry Wiggins, all
of Terre Haute, and Tom Wiggins Sr. and wife Cathy of Greenwood; 12 grandchildren; 22
great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Harold Boyd of Terre Haute;
and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband;

Shirley Ann (Shores) McNabb, 75, of Terre Haute, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday Nov.
10, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Jan. 13, 1934, in Terre Haute,
to Hallie Shores and Bessie Bretell Shores. She worked for many years at Columbia
Records, and retired from the Vigo County Treasurer's office and building inspectors.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia L. McClain and husband Michael, and Michelle
Ramey and husband Randy; two stepsons, Michael McNabb and wife Debbie, and Bradley
McNabb and wife Cathy; 10 grandchildren, Shawn McClain and wife Debbie, Melissa Jeffers
and husband Scott, Ryan McClain, Lori Ploessl and husband Craig, Troy Ramey and wife
Angie, Lee Ann McNabb, Rachel McNabb, Samantha McNabb, Ryan Bennett, and Eric
Bennett; and 10 great-grandchildren, Keli Pastorius, Megan and Steven Jeffers, Paige and
Daniel McClain, Clayton and Cloe Ploessl, Macy, Marlee and Madisyn Ramey. She was
preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Larry McNabb; daughter, Tammy Byers;

CLINTON — Sherwood Owen Buchanan, age 54, of Indianapolis, passed away Nov. 9, 2009
in his residence. Born Aug. 14, 1955 in Clinton, he was the son of James Buchanan and
Dorothy (Fields) Buchanan. "Woody" had worked in the Maintenance Department at Market
Square Arena and at Conseco Fieldhouse. Survivors include five sisters, Scelia Adams of
San Antonio, Texas, Dorothy Norris of Crawfordsville, Ind., Anna Girard of Cuba, Ill., Sara
Gearlds of Indianapolis, and Jennifer Walters of Indianapolis; a brother, Stephen R.
Buchanan of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents
and five brothers, James, George, Michael, Stanley and Jeffrey Buchanan. Burial was on
Friday in the Roselawn Memorial Park. The Roselawn Funeral Home assisted with

Robert Lee Culver, 66, of Terre Haute, died at 9:03 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, in Terre
Haute Regional Hospital. He worked for Eli Lilly and Company for 38 years, retiring as Fire
Marshall. Robert was born April 9, 1943, in Terre Haute, to Curtis Benjamin Culver and
Catherine L. (Apple) Culver.He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Brenda (Collins) Culver;
his father, Curtis Benjamin Culver of Terre Haute; a son, Kelly Edward Culver of Indianapolis;
two daughters, Kimberlie Kaye Culver of Indianapolis and Kristina Marie Akens and her
husband Curtis of Terre Haute; four grandchildren, Sarah and Nathan Babb of Indianapolis
and Jonathen and Katherine Akens of Terre Haute; a brother, Curtis Dean Culver of Terre
Haute; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and a large extended family. He was preceded in
death by his mother, Catherine Culver; a daughter, Shannon Lee Culver; and a sister,
Sharon Ann Oliver.He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a
33rd Degree Mason, a Master Mason in Park Lodge Free and Accepted Masons, a member
and Past Sovereign Prince in the Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Past Potentate in the
Zorah Shrine, emeritus member of Board of Directors at the Shrine Hospital in St. Louis,
member of the Transportation Club at the Zorah Shrine, secretary/treasurer of the Antique
Autos at the Zorah Shrine, Riley Chapter 23 Order of Eastern Star, volunteer driver for Meals
on Wheels, member of Special Interest Car Club in Terre Haute, founder of the Honored
Ladies Club of the Zorah Shrine, and worked for Avis and Budget Rent-a-Car.Visitation will
be held today, Nov. 1, 2009, from 2 until 6 p.m. at DeBaun Funeral Home, 85 E. Springhill
Drive. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with the

CLINTON — Dorothy P. Cinotto, 91, died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009. She was born in Clinton,
Ind., on June 23, 1918, to Luke and Elizabeth Edwards Taylor and was married to Charles
Cinotto, who preceded her in death in 1965. She was a graduate of Clinton High School and
Commerce and CF Industries. She was a member of Eastern Star.She is survived by one
daughter, Gwynne Lucas of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Eric and Angie of Laguna
Beach, Calif., and Jesolyn of Bloomington, Ind.; three great-grandchildren, Sophia Nicholas,
and Joie of Laguna Beach; and two nephews. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday
at Frist Funeral Home in Clinton with a private burial service to be conducted by the Rev. Ray

Mary Joyce Klein, 80, of Terre Haute, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 13, 2009, at
Union Hospital. She was born on March 27, 1929, in Westphalia, Ind., to Melrose Lewis and
Nelda (Stoelting) Hagemier.She retired from housekeeping at Union Hospital, after 24 years
of service.She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles E. Klein Sr.; and
son, Charles E. Klein Jr.Survivors are two children, Vickie Jackson and Tom Klein and wife
Debra, all of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Keri Jackson and Stephanie Klein, both of Terre

Eva Alene Manning, 92, of Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, Nov.
12, 2009, in IU Medical Center at Indianapolis. She was born on Nov. 20, 1916, in Boncombe,
Ill., to Monte Charles Cagle and Sarah Elizabeth Black Cagle. She married William Dewey
Locke in 1933, and he preceded her in death. She later married Herb Manning, and he also
preceded her in death.Survivors include her five children, Jo (Pete) Kazhe, Vesta (David)
Daley, Bill (Sharon) Locke, Bob (Marilyn) Locke, and Rebecca Carpenter and her husband
Dan; a brother, Chester Cagle; 13 grandchildren, Monte, Pamela, Sarah, Joella, Patrick,

Ida Willene Moats, 67, of Terre Haute, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 13, 2009, in
her home. She was born on Feb. 8, 1942, in Davenport, Iowa, to William and Freda
(Ashcraft) Shafer.Ida worked as a technician at Union Hospital for nine years. She loved
classic movies and history.She was preceded in death by her parents.Ida is survived by her
loving husband of 49 years, Don Moats, whom she married on March 21, 1960; three
children, Kevin Moats and wife Donna, Kris Harvey and husband Layton, and Kathleen
Moats; grandchildren, Taylor, Kayla, Jacob and Sebastian Moats, all of Terre Haute. Other
survivors are her sister, Beverly Peddy and husband Michael; brother, Warren Shafer and
wife Nina, all of Terre Haute; brothers-in-law, Ronald Moats of Las Vegas and Rick Moats of

Plexanne Lewis, 78, of Terre Haute, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, in Cobblestone Crossing
Health Campus. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She was born April 2,
1931, to Clayton A. "Stumpy" Alexander and Hazel Bettis Alexander. Survivors include her
husband of 57 years, Jordan D. Lewis; six children, Jordan D. Lewis III and his wife Jylmarie
of Tampa, Fla., Richard S. Lewis and his wife Jennifer of Clinton, Susan K. Lewis Stokes and
her husband Tom of Fond du Lac, Wis., Michael J. Lewis and his wife Christine of West
Terre Haute, Elizabeth "Libby" Lewis and her husband Carroll Smeltzer of Terre Haute, and
Kathryn "Kathy" Lewis of Terre Haute; and 12 grandchildren, Kelsey Stokes, Jessica Davis,
Lindsey Davis, Leslie Davis, Jordan Stokes, Jordan Lewis IV, Kirsten Lewis, John Krumreich,
Petr Rodway, Alexandra Lewis, Samantha Lewis and Jacob Lewis.Plexanne was a 1949
graduate of Wiley High School, and received her bachelor's degree (1953) and master's
degree (1982), both from Indiana State University. She was a past director of the Infant and
Toddler Center at Indiana State University. She was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church,
and was very active at the former Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she was
an elder and Sunday school teacher. She was a member and past president of Tri Kappa, a
member of Chi Omega, where she was active with their alumni chapter, was a member of
Law Wives, and had served on the board of directors of YMCA. She also was a member of
Badoura Temple 23 Daughters of the Nile, and was a recipient of the Strawberry Hill
Cannoneers Molly Pitcher Award.Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday,
Nov. 19, 2009, in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. Linda

Maloney, Winifred  

Winifred Maloney, 89, of Terre Haute, passed away on Nov. 8, 2009, in the Cobblestone
Crossing nursing facility. She was born on May 7, 1920, in the state of Washington, the
daughter of Harry and Lettie Barber.Winifred graduated from the University of Washington,
with a major in nursing, and became a Registered Nurse. In 1970, she married William E.
Maloney and lived in Los Angeles, with her husband for many years, where she pursued a
career in nursing. The Maloneys retired in 1990, and moved to Clinton, where they resided
until her husband's death, in 2007.Survivors include her stepdaughter, Janice Mainland and
husband Richard of Los Angeles; three grandsons, Mark Mainland of New York City, Jason
Mainland and wife Scilla of San Rafael, Calif., and Grant Mainland and wife Alexis of New
York City; and a great-grandson, Kian Jay Mainland of San Rafael.Funeral services are 2

ROCKVILLE — Billy Jo Brooker, 71, of Rockville, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at his
residence. He was born Aug. 28, 1938, in Rockville, to Darrell William Brooker and Katherine
Holliday Brooker. He formerly worked as a construction foreman and factory worker.
Survivors include his father, Darrell Brooker of Terre Haute; his wife, Connie Parker Brooker;
one daughter, Kathy (Fred) Huber of Terre Haute; three sisters, Martha (John) Webster of
Dallas, Ga., Marlene (Phillip) Trotzke, and Marylou Moore, all of Terre Haute; one brother-in-
law, James Parker of West Terre Haute; one grandson; one granddaughter; three great-
grandchildren; three nieces; four nephews; two great-nieces; and two great-nephews. He
was preceded in death by his mother; and foster son, Todd Rivera, in 2008. He served in the
U.S. Army, and was a member of Mecca Christian Church in Mecca, AMVETS Post 61 of
Rockville, and was a former member of the Teamsters Union. Services are 1 p.m. Friday at

Taylor J. Long, 85, of Terre Haute died Wednesday evening, Nov. 11, 2009 in his residence
with his family present. He was a retired Terre Haute City Police Officer and was well-known
as a car salesman, having retired from the former Krueger Buick Auto Dealership and also
operated several car lots around Terre Haute. He was born May 6, 1924 in Terre Haute to
John Taylor Long and Alberta Ligon Long. Survivors include his wife, Lea Reyher-Long;
seven sons, Jeffrey Long (Janice), Michael Long (Helen), Patrick Long (Sandy), Stephen
Long (Lisa), Barton Long and John Long (Cathy) all of Terre Haute, Tim Long (Marsha) of
Terre Haute; four daughters, Linda A. Long, Kerry Lawson (Michael), Bettie Ann Long and
Bridget Boling (Ken), all of Terre Haute; 36 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren;
stepchildren, Kay Reyher Beehler of Annapolis, Md., Stephen Cooksey (Valerie), of
Annapolis, Md., Mark M. Reyher (Janna), of Terre Haute, Michael W. Reyher (Susan), of
Villa Rica, Ga., Kehrt C. Reyher (Marzenna) of Warsaw, Poland, and William L. Reyher of

great-grandchild.Taylor was a graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and served with the U.S.
Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and a former
member of Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 40 and the Fraternal Order of
Police. Taylor was a NASCAR racing fan and liked baseball. He was a caring, loving father

LYFORD — Cecil C. Nelson, 89, of Carmel, and formerly of Lyford, passed away Nov. 18,
2009, at Manor Care at Summer Trace Nursing Home, in Carmel. He was born on Dec. 13,
1919, in Shelburn, to Ozro and Mable (Moore) Nelson. He retired from the Terre Haute U.S.
Penitentiary, where he worked as a supervisor of industries, after 23 years of service. He
was a U.S. Army veteran who served our country during World War II. He was a member of
the NARFE, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6653, in Clinton.Cecil was preceded in
death by his parents; brother, Ray Nelson; and sisters, Hazel Osborne, Betty Jo Nelson, and
Margie Akers.He is survived by his loving wife, Rosalie (Begliutti) Nelson, whom he married
on Oct. 11, 1941; two daughters, Sherilyn Ridgley of Clinton and Janet Pastorius and
husband Ed of Carmel; grandchildren, Sarah Jacobson of Brownsburg, Frank Ridgley of

at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She was a homemaker. She was born May 3, 1938, in
Clinton, to Ray Thompson and Lucille Kellams Thompson. Survivors include her husband of
51 years, Ray A. Harney, whom she married Jan. 31, 1958, in Rockville; three daughters,
Lisa (Richard) Fox, Melanie (Timothy) Van Winkle, all of Terre Haute, and Amy Harney of
Rosedale; one son, Andrew Harney; eight grandchildren, Jenny, Matthew and Derick Fox,
Chrystal Layton, Sgt. Christopher (Cristina) Martin, Aaron Harney, Jordan Van Winkle and
Nathan Harney; and three great-grandchildren, Kiersten and Colten Layton, and Kamryn
Martin. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two grandchildren, Kearstie Lynn
Martin and Adam B. Harney. She was a 1956 graduate of Rockville High School and
attended Indiana State Teachers College. She was active with the Rockville Alumni
Association and reunion planning. She was a member of Rockville First United Methodist
Church, United Methodist Women, served as a church trustee, Rockville Current Literature
Club, Gamma Sigma Chapter of Rockville Tri-Kappa, and Spring Creek Home Economics
Club in Terre Haute. She was employed at Aunty Patty's Antiques on the Rockville town
square. She loved to rug-hook, garden, travel, and camp, and enjoyed the beach. Memorial
services are 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Rockville First United Methodist Church, 128 N.

Prose, Josephine A. Lansaw    

Josephine A. Lansaw Prose, 95, of Terre Haute, passed away at Royal Oaks Health Care
and Rehabilitation Center, on Nov. 24, 2009, at 12:30 a.m. She was born Aug. 4, 1914, in
Paris, Ill., to Asher Lansaw and Blanche Spung Lansaw. She was preceded in death by her
husband of 60 years, Charles Prose; her parents; four brothers; one sister; and two special
nieces, Betty Jo Ann Burk and Josephine Anna Loudermilk Survivors include two daughters,
Darlene Captain (Steve) of Noblesville, and Kathy Bagley (Irvin); one son, Gray Prose
(Karen); three grandsons, Irvin Bagley II (Carrie), Nick Bagley, and Bob Prose (Bobbi); and
three great-grandchildren, Alison Prose, Nathan Prose and Steven Bagley, all of Terre
Haute. Also surviving are two nephews, Thomas Hurlow, Charles Kallis; many nieces and
nephews; and sisters-in-law, Kay Lansaw and Sophia Lansaw. She had worked 15 years at
General Knitwear, and was a retired employee of the City of Terre Haute as assistant
superintendent of the cemeteries. She had been very active in the Democratic party since
1936. She received the key to the city from Mayor Brighton for 1972-1980. She received the
Lifetime Service Award from the Democratic Party in 2007. She also was precinct committee
person for many years. She was a member of Northside Community Methodist Church. In
lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity. Visitation will be
held on Friday Nov. 27, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Roselawn Funeral Home. Services
will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, with Pastor Bob Roush officiating. Burial will be in
Roselawn Memorial Park.  
Hood, Dewey J.    

Dewey J. Hood passed away on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, in his residence at Sycamore
Manor. He was a retired cabinet maker, and was owner and operator of Hood Woodworking
and Supply Co. for 43 years. He was born June 30, 1918, in Cement, Okla., to Thomas F.
Hood and Naoma D. Hood. Survivors include one daughter, Marsha Hood Tahiri (and
husband Abdellah) of Marina Del Rey, Calif.; one sister, Faye Hinton of Cement; one
sister-in-law, Mary Levite of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by both parents; his wife of 56 years, Lorene Jensen Hood; three
brothers, Everett, Ruby and Simon Hood; and two sisters, Rosa Butler and Velma Talbert.
Mr. Hood was a member of Eastside Church of Christ. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942,
served in the European Theatre as a sergeant, and received several commendations,
including three Bronze Stars, two European Theatre ribbons, and a Good Conduct Medal.
Funeral services will be held at Eastside Church of Christ, 4025 College Ave., at 1 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, with Abe Miller and Coy Siddel officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn
Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at the
church. Memorial contributions in Mr. Hood's memory may be made to Camp Wabashi, 3525

Ashcraft Jr., Harry   

SHELBURN — Harry Ashcraft, Jr., 83, of Shelburn, passed away at 7:40 p.m., Tuesday, Nov.
24, 2009, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born June 12, 1926, in Shelburn, to
Harry Ashcraft Sr. and Ida Cropper Ashcraft. He graduated from Shelburn High School in
married "the love of his life" Nina Mae Potts on Oct. 16, 1948. He retired from Pfizer, Inc. in
January of 1990.Survivors include daughter, Linda Corey and husband Larry of Greenwood;
son, Gary Ashcraft of Riverview. Fla.; grandson, Brent Corey and wife Meagan of
Greenwood; brother, Franklin Dale Ashcraft and wife Linda Jean of Terre Haute; five nieces
and one nephew. He was looking forward to the birth of a great-grandchild in March. He was
preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 9, 2007; his parents; brother, Bill; and sister, Betty.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday in Mattox-McHugh Funeral Home in Shelburn, with Pastor
Norman Santus officiating. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Interment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute.
