Plew, Alfred E.
Alfred E. Plew, 90, of Terre Haute died Sunday evening, April 26, 2009, at Heartland
Health Care Center in Avon. He was the service manager at Jack Thrasher Ford, and also
Doan and Decker Ford for 42 years, before his retirement in 1988. He was born Aug. 27,
1918, in Linton, Indiana to George C. Plew and Alta Ethel Shephard Plew. Survivors
include his wife, Elizabeth Wright Redenbarger Plew of Brazil; his son, Roger A. Plew and
his wife Nancy of Trenton, N.J.; his daughter, Deborah D. Acree and her husband Lester
of Indianapolis; two step-sons, Fred Wilson of Terre Haute, and Phil Redenbarger of
Brazil; a stepdaughter, Rita Parker of Terre Haute; two brothers, George A. Plew of Linton,
and Francis E. Plew and his wife Alice of Olney, Ill.; a sister, Deloris Wells and her
husband Jim of Greenwood; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Plew of Linton; three grandchildren,
Tiffany L. Hensley, Holly M. Plew and Ryan C. Plew; six great-grandchildren; nine
stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He
was preceded in death by his first wife, Anita Rose Fulkerson Plew; his second wife, Ruth
Fuchs Wilson Plew; a stepdaughter, Rosa Lee Utz; two brothers, Clifford Plew and Richard
"Lee" Plew; and two sisters, Louise Bishop and Hazel Phegley.Al was a graduate of Linton
High School, and was an U.S. Army Infantry veteran of World War II. He was a member of
Eastside Church of Christ, Terre Haute Elks Lodge 86, Wayne Newton American Legion
Post 346, United Commercial Travelers, and Noon Optimist Club. He was well known for his
work and many years of dedication at both Jack Thrasher Ford and Doan and Decker
Ford. Al was an avid bowler, especially at the Elks Club, and was a volunteer for many
years with Special Olympics.Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 1,
2009, in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with Pastor Abe Miller
officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, with graveside military honors by
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.,
with an Elks memorial service to take place at 7:30 p.m., in the funeral home. In lieu of

Cota, James I.
BRAZIL — James I. Cota, 95, of Brazil, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Royal
Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Terre Haute. He was born March 13, 1914,
in Wolcott, to Jesse Cota and Rose (Talley) Cota. He married Marjorie McCoy, and she
preceded him in death. James had worked as an operating engineer for Local Union 841
from 1950 to 1977. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Seelyville, and
was a member of the Local IUOE 841. He was an avid golfer and mechanic. Survivors
include four children, Richard Cota and wife Janet of Newbern, N.C., James P. Cota and
wife Terri of Marshall, Ind., Sharron Cress and husband Michael of Lakeland, Fla., and
Michael Cota and wife Elaine of Battleground, Ind.; 12 grandchildren, Carla Ryan, Diane
House, Marjorie Cota, Christine Vetters, Jim Cota, Scott Cota, Karin Cota, Jim Cress, Mike
Cress, Ann Everett, Matt Cota and Holly Cota; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-
grandchild; a sister, Evelyn McDaniels of Speedway; and several nieces and nephews. He
also was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, George Cota, Don Cota and
Florence Beeler. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, in
Seelyville, with Father Harold Rightor II officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial
Park in Terre Haute. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Roselawn Memorial Park, 7550 N.
Clinton St., in Terre Haute.

Lewis, Helen
Helen Lewis, age 86, of Terre Haute passed away peacefully with her loving children by her
side late Wednesday night, April 29, 2009, at Meadows Manor East. She was born on Sept.
7, 1922, in Terre Haute to Michael and Julia Vencel Sr.In earlier years she worked at
Quaker Maid Company and Simplicity Patterns Company, and as a cook for the Vigo
County School Corp., as well as working as being a homemaker. She was a member of the
Hungarian Lodge and a former member of the Eagles Lodge. Helen loved doing many
different crafts.Survivors include her children, Jerry Lewis and wife Linda of Terre Haute,
Danny Lewis and his companion Ms. Bobbie Wilson of Jasonville, Ind., and Debbie Miller
Hammond of Terre Haute, Thomas Blitz and wife Michelle of Wichita, Kan., Larry Wilson of
Jasonville, Andrea Hoopingarner and husband Joe of West Terre Haute, and Crystal
Brooks and husband Michael of Terre Haute. Other survivors are great-grandchildren,
Trey and Trevor Hammond, Erin and Makenzie Blitz, Kaylee Jo and Allison Hoopingarner,
Aaliyah and Rayshawn Brooks; siblings, Joe Vencel and wife Faye of Boulder, Colo.,
Elizabeth Button of Brownsburg. Ind. Annie Montague of Centerpoint, Ind., Don Vencel and
wife Annette of Terre Haute, and many nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband, Price W. Lewis who passed away July 14, 2001, and brothers,
Michael, Steve, John, and Frank Vencel.Services are 3 p.m. today in Roselawn Funeral
Home with Pastor Jeffrey Harpole officiating. Visitation will be from noon to 3 p.m. today in
the funeral home. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. A Celebration of Helen's Life

Herrington, Mona G.
Mona G. Herrington, 81, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, in Union Hospital.
She was born June 5, 1927, in Ferndale, Mich. to Roy Cutsinger and Eunice Street
Cutsinger. Mona was retired from Bemis Corporation. She was preceded in death by her
husband Raymond E. Herrington who passed away in 2002. Survivors include three sons,
Raymond Warren Herrington and his wife Jan of Albuquerque, N.M., William J. Herrington
and his wife Denise of Nineveh, Ind., and Jerry Gene Herrington of Meriden, Conn.; two
brothers, Robert Cutsinger and George Cutsinger both of Terre Haute; seven
grandchildren, Angie Jaynes, Bobbi Shepard, Connie Wright, Lance Herrington, Joanne
LeFort, Janice Herrington, and Jerry Herrington; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was also
preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry Dean Herrington; and a brother, Roy
Edward Cutsinger. Mona was a member of Berean Baptist Church. She played in the Elks
Ladies Golf League and loved to play cards, fish, and water ski.Funeral services will be
conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2009 in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S.
25th Street with Reverend Larry Lilly officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Fuqua, John F.
John F. Fuqua, 87, of Terre Haute passed away April 30, 2009, at Union Hospital. He was
born Sept. 20, 1921, in Sanford, Ind. the son of Bertha and Charles Fuqua. He retired as
Yard Master after 40 years of service with Conrail. After retirement John and Criss enjoyed
the winter months in Key Largo, Fla.He is survived by his spouse of 47 years, Crystal
"Criss" Fuqua; son, Dr. Keith Fuqua and wife Chris of Toledo, Ohio; daughters, Karen
Whitlock and husband Dale of Terre Haute, stepdaughter, Loretta Mosteller, stepdaughter,
Linda Shaker and husband Earl; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five
stepgrandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha and Charles, three
sisters and one brother.He is a U.S. Army veteran and served in World War II. He was a
1939 graduate of Riley High School. He was a member of Kriestenstein American Legion
Post 104, Past Master of William Penn Lodge 727, Zorah Shrine, Past Worthy Patron of 12
points O.E.S. 528, past Director of Antique Auto Club, Scottish Rite, Lifetime member of
V.F.W. 972, Lite Membership Moose Lodge, Member Marine Corp. League, and Railroad
Retirement Club.Services are 11 a.m. Monday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home with the Rev.
Monty Barker officiating. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday with Masonic service at 7

Barnhart, Lorenzo M.
Lorenzo M. "Pug" "Barnie" Barnhart, 89, of West Terre Haute passed away at 5:55 p.m.
Friday April 17, 2009, in Davis Gardens Health Center in Terre Haute. He was born July
27, 1919, in Vigo County to Walter Barnhart and Stella King Barnhart. He had owned and
operated a trucking company for many years hauling coal mine equipment and machinery
for coal mines in the area. He and his wife Muriel moved to Florida, where they lived for 25
years. He continued as an owner/operator of a tri-axle truck in Florida for many years.
After retiring as a driver, he became a superintendent for a crush plant in Florida and later
as a superintendent of a supply warehouse in Miami. He and Muriel then moved back to
West Terre Haute and he continued to work for another 20 years as a security guard for
Sony in Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by his wife, Muriel Fay Bailey Barnhart on
March 28, 2002. His surviving family includes a son, Phillip Barnhart; a brother, Charles
"Coen" Barnhart; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces
and nephews spanning from Tennessee, Florida, California, Nevada, Illinois, and Indiana.
He was a 60-year member of the West Terre Haute Masonic Lodge No. 687 F. and A.M.
He was a hard-working man. He loved old-school country music and he liked a good laugh.
He was loved and respected by his family and friends and will be missed. According to his
wishes, there will be a visitation only from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home
with a Masonic Memorial Service at 7 p.m. Cremation will be scheduled and his ashes will
be buried in Roselawn Memorial Park at a later date.

Trout, Nellie Sue "Tuddy"
Nellie Sue "Tuddy" Trout ended her courageous fight with an extended illness and entered
into the gates of Heaven at 3:05 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Born Dec. 12, 1936, to
Grace Sumner Donham and Raymond W. Donham in Terre Haute, Ind.Nellie married
Thomas Preston Trout on Aug. 29, 1953, in Brazil, Ind.She received her nursing degree
from Ivy Tech State College- Terre Haute campus in 1976. She was employed by Planned
Parenthood in her early nursing career. She developed a passion for home health care
after a medical emergency in her family. This impassioned her to become a Visiting Nurse
who did rural health care daily for several years. Nellie was chosen as Assistant Director of
McMillan Adult Day Care in 1988 where she cared for geriatric patients until her retirement
in 2001. During this same period, Nellie was employed by Hospice of the Wabash Valley as
an on call nurse helping families care for terminally ill family members. While at McMillan
Center she was instrumental in developing fundraising events like bake sales where she
helped bake and sell pies and cakes for holiday meals and at other times throughout the
year. She was a member of Pleasant Valley Community Church, Mothers Against Drunk
Driving, Kerman Grotto Cauldron, and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Nellie loved sewing,
fishing, camping, antiquing, cake decorating, volunteer work with her church, and
spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and
traveling. Survivors include her sister, Joan Brown of Terre Haute; daughters, Joni Ditto of
Terre Haute, Cindy Phillips and companion Harold Umphries of McIntosh, N.M., Saundra
Trout and fiancé Charles Schimmel of Terre Haute, Connie Wilson and husband Donald A.

House Banquet Room. The family is also eternally grateful to Becky Pharris for her loving
direction and support in helping care for Nellie during her last days.Because the family is

Malooley, Lutefa Boalbey
Lutefa Boalbey Malooley formerly of Terre Haute, passed away at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday,
May 3, 2009. Born April 30, 1917 to Solomon and Rose Boalbey She was the fourth of nine
brothers and sisters growing up in Cairo, Ill. and graduating from Cairo High School in
1934.Surviving are one brother, Richard Boalbey, one sister, Lorene Boalbey Nassif.She
married Moses Malooley on June 24, 1951 in Cairo. They lived in Moses' hometown of
Terre Haute, Ind. and had two sons. She was active in her community and church, St.
Joseph for 50 years before relocating to Indianapolis in 2004. She is also survived by two
sons, Charles Malooley and wife Beverly and Michael Malooley and wife Robbin and five
grandchildren: Michael Thomas, Sarah Elizabeth, Susan Marie, Micah Robert and Mary
Latefa.Mass of the Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church with the
Rev. Richard Kaley officiating. Viewing is 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Interment will
be in Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of

McIntyre, Kenneth E.
Kenneth E. McIntyre, 75, of Terre Haute died Thursday, May 7, 2009, in Royal Oaks Health
and Rehabilitation Center. He was formerly a tool and die maker for Western Electric in
Indianapolis. Kenneth was born May 30, 1933, in Indianapolis, to Harry A. McIntyre and
Laura Walls McIntyre.Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Dorothy L. Herman McIntyre; a
son, Kevin McIntyre and his wife Julie, of Paragon, Ind.; two daughters, Karen Burnett and
her husband, Robert of Marion, Ind. and Karla Brown and her husband, Robin of
Springdale, Ark.; a stepson, Thomas Bird of Georgia; a brother, Harold McIntyre of
Sebring, Fla.; five grandchildren, Corie and her husband, Michael, Jon and his wife,
Rachel, Greg, Samuel and Paul; and a great-grandson, Jacob. He was preceded in death
by his parents; a brother, Willard McIntyre; and a granddaughter, Kari Ann Burnett.
Kenneth's activities while living in Clay City included being a member of American Legion
Post 225, driving a school bus for Clay City Schools for 10 years and, along with his wife
Dorothy, delivered Meals on Wheels for over 10 years. He was involved with Junior
Achievement in Indianapolis, was an avid fisherman and enjoyed bowling with his
wife.Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009, in Callahan and
Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. Stephen Moore officiating. Burial will

DeBord, Alva L.
DANA — Alva L. DeBord, 90, of Dana, Ind. and formerly of Terre Haute died Tuesday
evening, May 5, 2009, in Palm Garden of Winter Haven, Fla. He was a retired farmer. He
was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Princeton to Jess DeBord and Carrie Antis DeBord. He was
preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Frances Irene Graves DeBord, on Feb. 2, 2007.
Survivors include a son, Robert J. DeBord of Winter Haven, Fla. and his significant other,
Sandra DeAtley of Brownsburg; a daughter, Carol Ann Reynolds and her husband, John of
Muncie; a brother, Robert E. DeBord and his wife Frances of Terre Haute; a sister-in-law,
Mary Bell of California; a special daughter-in-law, Phyllis DeBord of Terre Haute; four
grandchildren, Renee Reed and her husband Richard of Muncie, Karen Polk and her
husband, Greg of Muncie, Robert Alan DeBord and his wife Melody of Rockville and
Theresa Collins and her husband Monte of Plainfield; several great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ellis
DeBord; and two sisters, Velma Lafferty and Betty Pauline DeBord. Alva was a 1938
graduate of Riley High School and was a member of Blanford Sportsman Club. He loved

Wright, Clara Lucille
Clara Lucille Wright, 87, of Terre Haute passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009 in
Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center with her loving husband of 71 years at her
side. She was born Nov. 24, 1921 in Indianapolis to George Goodall and Dolly Newborne
Goodall. Survivors include her husband, Roy Leon Wright whom she married May 11,
1938; two daughters, Donna Eggers and her husband Dr. Gene Eggers of Green Bay,
Wisc. and Debbie Weaver and her husband Terry of Franklinton, La.; four grandchildren,
Laura Wangerin and her husband William of Chicago, Alison Keast and her husband
Richard of De Pere, Wisc., Dr. Heidi Eggers-Ulve and her husband Dr. Eric Ulve of De
Pere, Wisc., and Kurt Eggers and his wife Jill of De Pere, Wisc.; 12 great-grandchildren,
Emily, Ryan, Kelsey, Connor and Elle Keast; Laney, Murphy and Charlie Eggers; and
Sophie, Cooper, Maeread and Trygg Ulve; and a personal family friend, Jewel Owen. She

attended George Washington High School and enjoyed cooking, gardening, and her

Payton, Thelma N.
BRAZIL — Thelma N. Payton, 90, a lifetime resident of Brazil, passed away on Mother's
Day, Sunday, May 10, 2009, at her daughter's home, where she has resided for the past
five years. She was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Turner, to Harry "Dink" Ruddell and Ella Emmert
Ruddell.She attended Staunton High School, class of 1936. In the early years of her
marriage she was a stay-at-home wife and mother. She began working at Columbia House
in 1962, and retired from CBS in 1982. She was an excellent cook and housekeeper, but
her favorite pastime was sewing. She loved shopping for fabrics and her work as a
seamstress was always meticulous. She also loved to travel and enjoyed many leisure trips
after her retirement. She was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and a
sisters, Opal Novotney and Kathryn Kyle, both of Terre Haute.Survivors include one sisters,

Reed, Viola Westrup
Viola Westrup Reed, 86, of Terre Haute, died Monday, May 11, 2009, after a courageous
battle with cancer. She was born July 26, 1922, in New York City, to Charles William
Westrup and Viola Boggs Westrup.Survivors include her husband, William Joseph Reed,
whom she married Feb. 15, 1947; a son, William W. Reed of Terre Haute; a daughter and
son-in-law, Shelley Reed and her husband Carl Kinnunen of Dayton, Ohio; two
grandchildren, Laura Reed Kinnunen and Patrick Charles Kinnunen, both of Dayton; two
sisters-in-law, Frances Westrup of Terre Haute, and Rosemary Kosewicz of Denver; as well
as much-loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a
brother, Robert S. Westrup."Vi" was a graduate of Garfield High School, attended Stephens
College in Columbia, Mo., and received her bachelor's degree from Indiana State Teachers
College in Terre Haute. Active in community affairs, Vi was a former president of the
League of Terre Haute, Children's Theater, League for Animal Welfare, and the Rose
Ladies Aid Society. She also was a Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader. Her memberships
included First Congregational Church, Swope Art Museum, Inactive League of Terre Haute,
Tobies Inactive League, and Indiana State University Alumni Association. Funeral services
will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2009, in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home,
605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. Donald C. Mullen officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn

John J. "Jack" Kerins Jr., 87, of Terre Haute passed away May 12, 2009 in Cobblestone
Crossing Health Campus. Jack was the former president of McMillan Sports. He was born
years, Elynore "Pet" Petyo Kerins, preceded him in death in 2003.Survivors include a son,
John Michael Kerins of Kirkwood, Mo.; and two daughters, Kathy Neal and her husband
Robert of Queretaro, Mexico, and Connie Whiteman and her husband Lynn of Bardstown,
Ky.; seven grandchildren, Tracey Lockhart and her husband Nathan, Lindsey Whiteman,
David Kerins, Jeff Neal, Sean Kerins, Sarah Kerins and Jonathan Whiteman; and a
sister-in-law, Irene Petyo Henderson and her husband Wayne of Clearwater, Fla. He was
also preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter-in-law Shiela Kerins.Jack was
well-known locally and probably best-remembered for co-hosting the "TV Sportsman's Show"
with Jack Ennis that ran for 21 years on both WTHI and WTWO. During World War II, he
served with the United States Marine Corps participating in combat at Guadalcanal,
Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima earning several awards including the Purple Heart. After
40 years with McMillan Sporting Goods, he retired and began a writing career having
published articles about fishing and hunting adventures in the great outdoors he loved so
much. His love for writing developed his membership in the Outdoor Writers Association of
America and the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers. Jack was a founding member
of the Wabash Valley Chapter of Ducks Unlimited and the Strawberry Hill Cannoneers and is
a Life Member of The Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Third Marine
Division Association and The Iwo Jima Survivors Association.A Mass of Christian Burial will
be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday May 16, 2009 in St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Rick
Ginther officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with Military Honors by the

Aaron Cale Bays passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009. He was born June 10, 1987, in
Terre Haute.He is survived by his mother, Michelle Lee Carlson Bradburn and Bobby
Joseph. He was the son of Warren Cale Bays and wife Kelly, Mick and Kelly Lawson, and
Ted and Sherrie Bradburn; grandparents, Charles and Carolyn Carlson and Jeannie Shaw;
one son, Brayden Bays; three brothers, Tyler Bradburn, Gregg and Billy Lawson; four
sisters, Sydney Bays, Haylee Shoemaker, Ashley Monroe and Danielle Akers; special friend,

Jacqueline K. (Lucas) Funk, 67, of Brazil, passed away at her residence at 2:10 a.m. May 12,
2009, with her family by her side. She was born in Terre Haute on Sept. 23, 1941, to Jack
and Geraldine (Blunk) Lucas. She attended Jefferson High School in Lafayette. She worked
for Columbia Records in Terre Haute. On May 23 1964, she married Larry Funk. Jackie and
Larry moved to Los Alamitos, Calif., in 1969, where she worked at Arrowhead Products as a
spot welder for 31 years. She also served as the president of the Steel Workers Union 560
for Columbia Records in Terre Haute. On May 23 1964, she married Larry Funk. Jackie and
was an avid NASCAR fan as her favorite driver was Tony Stewart. She will be forever
remembered as a wonderful wife, sister, aunt and friend.She was preceded in death by her

Milner, Phyllis Joan
Phyllis Joan Milner, age 73, of Terre Haute, passed away May 14, 2009, in Union Hospital.
Born Aug. 31, 1935, in Terre Haute, she was the daughter of William Woerner and Gladys
(Stanley) Woerner. She married Walter Milner and he preceded her Jan. 9, 1972. Phyllis was
a 1953 graduate of Garfield High School. She was a Foster Grandparent and had worked at
MCL, Merchant's Bank and Woolsworths. She was a member of the Southside Baptist
Church and her hobbies included reading and crocheting. She was a former member of the
Wabash Valley BPM. Survivors include her two children, Cathy Layman and husband John
and Michael Milner and wife Brenda all of Terre Haute; five grandchildren, Rob Layman,
Amanda Lawler and husband Ben, Caryn, Kyle and Cayla Layman, all of Terre Haute;
great-grandchildren, Daryn, Jazmyne and Jadyn Layman, Nathaniel Layman-Tabor, James
Layman, Maci Lawler and Josiah Layman; a sister, Rosemary Stultz of Terre Haute; several
nieces and nephews and special friends Pastor Richard and Sue Dayhuff.Her parents,
husband, brother, William Woerner and sister, Betty Maxwell all preceded her. Visitation will

Hollar, Robert Lee
Robert Lee Hollar, 90, of Carmel, Ind. and formerly of Terre Haute, died Friday, May 15,
2009, in Indianapolis. Born in Goshen, April 28, 1919, he was the youngest of three sons and
three daughters raised by their mother, Viola A. (Fisher) Hollar, all of whom preceded him in
death.A 1937 graduate of New Paris High School, he earned a baccalaureate degree from
Manchester College in 1941. Robert served in the 33rd Infantry Division in New Guinea, the
Philippines, and Japan during World War II. He attended graduate school at Indiana
post-graduate work. He was a teacher and coach at Van Buren and New Paris high schools,
Hanover College, and Indiana State University. During his tenure of 35 years at Indiana
State, he was on the coaching staff of the football, baseball, basketball, and golf teams. His
administrative assignments included Acting Athletic Director, Acting Recreation Department
Chair, Acting Dean of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, Chair of Men's Physical
Education Department, and Associate Dean of the School of HPER. He retired as Professor
of Physical Education and Associate Dean. Following his retirement in 1985 he was named
ISU Homecoming Parade Grand Marshall. Professional memberships included Indiana State
Teachers Association and Phi Delta Kappa. He was a Kentucky Colonel.A resident of Terre
Haute from 1950 to 1995, he served as an elder and deacon at Central Presbyterian Church
and upon moving to Carmel he joined Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. His wife
of 61 years, Jean (Hassler) Hollar survives as well as two daughters, Constance Ann (Bruce)
McLaren of Terre Haute and Carolyn Jean (Don) Palmer of Carmel. His five grandchildren
include Anne McLaren of Columbus; Catherine McLaren (Marshall) VanNahmen of Carmel;
Christopher (Natalie) Palmer of West Lafayette; Elizabeth Palmer of Carmel; and Emily

Dreher, Jack P.
Jack P. Dreher, 71, of Terre Haute, passed away Friday, May 15, 2009, at St. Vincent Seton
Specialty Hospital, in Indianapolis. Born Aug. 21, 1937, in Terre Haute, he was the son of Joe
Dreher and Thelma (Knox) Dreher. He married Martha Jackson, and she survives. He served
in the U.S. Marine Corps, in Okinawa. He worked and retired from Wabash Fiberbox after
more than 40 years. He was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Marine
Corps League. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, sports, construction, and helping his
friends with their construction projects. Survivors include his wife and companion of more
than 40 years; a brother, Charles Dreher and wife Lyn of Cary, N.C.; a sister, Carolyn Burke
and husband Maurice of Terre Haute; a sister-in-law, Ethel Retosh, several nieces and Buffy
Joe; and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Judy
Jane Dreher. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St.,
with Pastor C. Ray Leach officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, with the

Bostrom, Shirley June Bliss
Shirley June Bliss Bostrom, of Terre Haute, formerly of Orland Park, Ill., died at Union
Hospital at 10:25 p.m., Friday, May 15, 2009. She was a homemaker, and attended World
Gospel Church.She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Martin Bostrom; three children,
Bonnie (Jim) Horner of West Bloomfield, Mich., Barry (Carole) Bostrom of Terre Haute, Eric
(Teddi) Bostrom of Palos Heights, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janet Hansen, in 2008; brother, Dale Bliss, in

Bridgewater, Evalena Helen
Evalena Helen Bridgewater, 87, of Terre Haute, died Friday, May 15, 2009, in her home. She
was born Sept. 4, 1921, in Paris, Ill., to George Creech and Clara June Staley
Creech.Survivors include her son, Steven Bridgewater and his wife Von; two daughters,
Janet Haney, and Linda Harbor and her husband Dennis, all of Terre Haute; her brother,
William Creech and his wife Penny of Paris; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
George Bridgewater; a son, Ronald Nelson Bridgewater; and two grandchildren. Evalena
was a member of Terre Haute Bible Center, and enjoyed spending time with her family.
Children were an extremely important part of her life, as she was a foster parent for more
than 30 years, and provided day care to many.Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m.

Youmans, Max
CLINTON — Max Youmans, 84, of Monroe, La., and formerly of Clinton, died Wednesday,
May 13, 2009, of complications from pneumonia. He was born Oct. 8, 1924, in Clinton, to
Harley Youmans and Ethel Hall Youmans. He retired from IMC as a chemical engineer. He
was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Other memberships include the
Masons, Barak Shrine Temple, Royal Order of Jesters, and the Lions Club. He was a charter
member of Northeast Dance Club and Pine Hills Country Club. He volunteered at St. Vincent
de Paul Community Pharmacy and the Senior Citizen Tax filing program.Survivors include a
son, Steve and Cathy Youmans, and their daughter, Megan Rose of New York; a daughter,
Karen Youmans of Illinois; a stepdaughter, Susan and Ed Everett of Monroe, La.; and two
nephews, Donald and Robert Youmans.Funeral services are 2 p.m. CDT Monday, at

Williams, Lucille "Lou"
Lucille "Lou" Williams, 77, of Terre Haute, and also Winona Lake, passed away May 16,
2009, in Fort Wayne. She was the daughter of Kenneth Thompson and Verda Thompson.
She married Jerry Raymond Williams on Aug. 10, 1951, and he survives. Lou was a
homemaker who lived a Christian life and never met a stranger. Throughout her life she
loved parties and getting people together, hosting many activities. She loved playing games,
especially euchre and rook, and was a fierce competitor every time. She was spontaneous
and full of energy throughout her life. She made countless pies and prepared numerous
meals for others, and never lost contact with old friends. She was always attentive and
supportive to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After replacing her hips she
took up walking and proudly completed a 5K walk at age 72. When her eyesight began to fail
she learned how to read Braille. Nothing ever really stopped her until her death. Survivors, in
addition to her husband, include four children, Kathy Fonner and husband Stephen of
Tallapoosa, Ga., Janet Volkers and husband Frank of Terre Haute, Matthew Williams and
wife Pamula of West Terre Haute, and Joseph Williams and wife Kathy of Irvington, Ala.;
grandchildren, Amber Webb and husband Lucian of Tallapoosa, Frank S. Volkers and wife
Kerry of Maplegrove, Minn., Kyle Volkers and wife Kristen of Terre Haute, Kevin Crist of Hot
Springs, Ark., Adam Crist and wife Cristy of Terre Haute, Matthew Williams Jr. of Terre
Haute, Jason Williams of Terre Haute, Tyler Williams of Jeffersonville, Alicia Antrim of
Irvington, Ala., and Mehery Beth Burt of Irvington; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty
Johnson and husband Robert of Terre Haute; two brothers, Jack Thompson and wife Helen
of Venice, Fla., and Montel Thompson and wife Maxine of Terre Haute; and many nieces and

Louise M. Jones, 87, of Terre Haute died Saturday, May 16, 2009 in Davis Gardens Health
Center. She was born Aug. 13, 1921 in Terre Haute to John Unger, Sr. and Alice Cottom
Unger. She was a retired beautician and was owner and operator of Vogue Hair Salon and
Louise's Beauty Shop. She was preceded in death by her husband Albert L. Jones who
passed away in 2003. Together they owned and operated Jonesy's Step-saver market and
gas station. Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Miesel and her husband John; a
brother, John Unger, Jr. and his wife Marcella; a son-in-law, Larry Harris; four grandchildren,
Angie Collier, Kelli Harris, Corey Miesel and Jarrad Miesel; and a great-granddaughter, Alexa

she enjoyed sewing, playing cards, bowling and especially entertaining family and

Claybaugh, Kenneth E.
Kenneth E. Claybaugh, age 75, of St. Louis, Mo., passed away May 15, 2009, in St. Louis.
Born July 3, 1933, in Terre Haute, he was the son of Earl Claybaugh and Margaret
(Thomas) Claybaugh. He married Velma Dean Poff on April 25, 1954, and she preceded him
March 22, 2008. Kenneth had served in the Navy. He was the Vice President of ADP.
Survivors include his daughter, Debra Claybaugh and her husband Hugh Carroll of St.
Louis; two grandchildren, Jessica and Adam Carroll of St. Louis; a sister, Beverly Claybaugh
of Terre Haute. His parents; wife, and daughter, Diane Jean Claybaugh preceded him in
death. Inurnment was 3:45 p.m. Friday at the Roselawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Peter

Helen Virginia Peters, age 92, died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at Davis Gardens Health Care
Center, in Terre Haute, Ind. Helen was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Terre Haute to Bert McPherson
and Florence Anderson McPherson. She married Jonathan Peters of Urbana, Ill., in 1942,
and after his military service in WWII they resided in Terre Haute where Jonathan was a
purchasing agent for the U.S. Federal Penitentiary. Helen was educated at Warren Grade
School and Garfield High School and attended Indiana State Teachers College. She was

preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1995; her brother, Robert McPherson and

an executive secretary at Anne Page-Quaker Maid in Terre Haute.She was her nephew,

CRAWFORDSVILLE — Jerry Howard Rowings, age 65, of Cicero, Ind. passed away
Wednesday night in Noblesville. He was born on Jan. 27, 1944, in Crawfordsville, Ind. to
Howard and Jewell (Pruett) Rowings.Jerry loved the outdoors, camping and fishing, and he
was also very interested in genealogy. He graduated from Turkey Run High School in 1962.
He was formerly an employee of Indiana National Bank and the Federal Reserve Bank office,
the Federal Home Loan Bank in Indianapolis, and was currently working at Sears as a
repairman.Jerry is survived by two children, Jason Howard Rowings of Simpsonville, S. C. and
James Cory Rowings of Cicero; a sister, Eva Jeannette Rowings of Greenwood, and a
brother, John Rowings and wife Linda of Indianapolis. Other survivors are two nieces, two
nephews, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.Services are 11 a.

Locke, Barbara Lee
Barbara Lee Locke, 78, of Terre Haute, died Friday, May 22, 2009, at Davis Gardens Health
Care. She was born Dec. 23, 1930, in Terre Haute, to Grace and William "Bill" Locke. She
was a graduate of Garfield High School, and followed a secretarial career in the medical field,
starting at Union Hospital transcribing autopsies, and later retiring as a corporate secretary
for The AP and S Clinic, after 45 years of dedicated service. Barbara is survived by her high
school sweetheart and companion, Paul Campbell; a brother, Robert Locke and his wife
Phoebe of Fairfield, Calif.; a niece, Lisa and her husband Dan Del'Osso of Berkley, Calif.;
and nephew, Robert M. Locke Jr. and wife Joy Locke of San Clemente Calif.She was a
member of St. George Episcopal Church in West Terre Haute, and St. Stephen's Episcopal
Church in Terre Haute. She was devoted to her faith, family and her profession, and loved

Robert Lee Taylor, 67, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at his home. He was
retired from International Paper Company. He was born April 2, 1942, in Terre Haute, to
Walter and Mary Brown Taylor.He is survived by three daughters, Angie Taylor and fiancé
John Finn, Vickie Alqubaisi, and Dawn Kerns; two sisters, Madonna Ball and her husband the
Rev. Sam Ball, and Melodie Sarver and her husband Steve; and seven grandchildren, A.J.
Alqubaisi, Farras Alqubaisi, Noura Alqubaisi, Sara Alqubaisi, Eisa Alqubaisi, Lyndsay Taylor,

Turner, Ruth M.
Ruth M Turner, 81, of Terre Haute died May 18, 2009, in Banner Thunderbird Medical Center
in Phoenix. She was born on Aug. 28, 1927, to Roy Greggs and Myrtle Davis Greggs. Ruth
was a medical librarian and had been employed by the Commercial Solvents
Corporation.Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Brenton Morris of Terre Haute; five nieces,
Sandy Boswell, Susie Davidson, Carol Carpenter, Donna McCleary, Joyce Bunch; one
nephew, Greg Brenton; a sister-in-law, Ruth Turner Miller; and a devoted friend, Charlie
Hanlon, and several great-nieces and nephews. Preceded in death are her husband, Austin
Turner; two brothers, Clyde and Edward Greggs and a nephew, Terry Turner and his wife
Carol who is surviving.Services for Ruth Turner are 1 p.m. Wednesday at The DeBaun
Funeral Home Springhill Chapel, with Pastor Jeff Lee officiating, visitation will begin at 10 until
services. Entombment will take place at Roselawn Mausoleum.

Alsman, Virginia R.
Virginia R. Alsman, 86, of Terre Haute, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009, in her
residence. Born Nov. 13, 1922, in Vincennes, she was the daughter of Clarence J. Leimbach
and Matilda Rose Leimbach. She married Billy Joe Alsman, and he preceded her in death.
Virginia served in the U.S. Army. She worked as a label installer for Columbia House, and
also was a homemaker. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, and
Fraternal Order of Eagles. Her hobbies included bingo and ceramics. Survivors include her
daughter, Nancy Wilson and husband Ron of Terre Haute; two sons, Robert Shake of Terre
Haute, and William Dean Shake of Vincennes; three grandchildren, Jerry Baker of California,
Jennie Howard of Virginia, and Kathryn Grouske of Arizona; and five great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Robert Leimbach. Graveside
services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Roselawn Memorial Park. Roselawn Funeral Home assisted
with arrangements.

Thomas, Howard E.
UNIVERSAL — Howard E. Thomas, 76, of Universal, passed away at 3:13 a.m. Tuesday, May
26, 2009, in his residence. He was born Sept. 26, 1932, in Vermillion County, to Jackson G.
Thomas and Anna Laura Thomas. He was a torch operator at J.I. Case, retiring in 1987. He
was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Clinton, and United Auto Workers Union 689 in
Terre Haute.He is survived by his wife, Sarah Fisher Thomas; his children, Elizabeth Sue
England, Robert Wayne Shaw II, and Deborah Lynn Magill, all of Terre Haute, Anna Laura
Pine of West Terre Haute, Lisa Gayle Searing of Universal, Howard Lee Thomas of
Champaign, Ill., and Noble Ed Shaw of Decatur, Ala.; 18 grandchildren; several great-
grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was
preceded by his parents; a son, Terry Evan Thomas in 1958; and several brothers and
sisters.Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, at Victory Baptist Church, 133 S.
Washington St., in Fairview Park (North Ninth Street), with the Rev. Larry Snyder officiating

Robinson, Roy Eugene
Roy Eugene Robinson, 59, of Terre Haute, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Union
Hospital. Born May 2, 1950, in Eldorado, Ill., he was the son of Fred Eugene Robinson and
Vonda Louise (McGhee) Robinson. Roy worked as guitar manager at the Conservatory of
Music for more than 30 years. He had been a member of many bands. He was an inductee
into the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame, and later became a board member also.
Survivors include his companion of more than 30 years, Cathy Sue Grogan, of Terre Haute; a
brother, Bert W. Robinson and wife Margaret of Terre Haute; two nieces, Cathy A. Effner and
husband Matt of West Terre Haute, and Karen Reynolds of Terre Haute; four great-nieces;
two great-nephews; and a good friend, Joy Whitlock of Terre Haute. He was preceded in
death by his parents. Services are 2 p.m. Friday at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton
St. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Friday.

John D. Sell, 81, of Terre Haute, died at 4 p.m Monday, May 25, 2009, at his residence. He
was born July 11, 1927, in Bourbon, to Ferd and Fern Sell.Survivors include his wife, Anna
Sell; two sons, J. D. Sell, and Kevin Sell; one daughter, Erin Rich; one brother, Tom Sell; two
sisters, Doris Hurley, and Esther McKinnis; five grandchildren; and four

Marzett, Samatha
Samatha Marzett of Terre Haute, passed away May 22, 2009. She was born April 19, 1937, in
Castle, Okla. the daughter of Lee Wright and Rossie Bryant. She retired from Indiana State
University. Survivors include her son, Donell Marzett; daughter, Regina (Michael) Chatlin;
sisters, Rosalee Marzett, Ivola Hart, Veotha Williams and Edwina Wright; brother, Al Wright;
grandson, David Nathaniel Marzett; granddaughter, Tina Marzett, grandson, Don Chatlin;
granddaughters, Donnell Rayne Marzett, Golden Marzett, Samantha (Dana) Kidd, Stephanie
Marzett and Staci (Robin) Rodriguez. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Russell Funeral Home
Chapel with Elder John Whitehead officiating. Calling hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in

Shield, Myra J.
Myra J. Shield, 81, of Terre Haute died Thursday, May 14, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. in her residence.
She was a retired dental assistant for Dr. Joseph Minnis. She was born May 31, 1927, in Terre
Haute to Harold O. Dennis and Pauline (Ball) Dennis. She is survived by a son: Michael J.
Hauck (Helen) of Terre Haute; a grandson: Michael D. Hauck (Anissa) a granddaughter:
Wendy J. Cook (Mark); great-granddaughters: MacKenzie and Carrigan Hauck; and a
companion Bill Llewellyn. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Monty A. Hauck;
her husbands, Joe Hauck, William "Duke" Doolen, and Albert Shield. She was a member of the
Ladies of the Moose, Senior Citizen's Center, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, NAARF and AARP, and
the Red Hat Society. Visitation will be 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E.
Springhill Drive. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Rick
Swan officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Roselawn Memorial Park. The family suggests
