Dobson, Terry Lee    

Terry Lee Dobson, 66, of Terre Haute, died at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, in his
residence. He retired after 30 years with IBM as a system engineer, then was a computer
consultant and a legal videographer. He was born on May 9, 1942, in Camas, Wash., to
Clinton A. Dobson and Della M. (Bevard) Dobson.He is survived by his wife, Ann J.
(Sherman) Dobson; his mother, Della M. Dobson; four sons, Terry L. Dobson Jr. (Shelda)
of Hainesville, Ill., Kevin W. Dobson (Renee) of Terre Haute, Shaun M. Dobson (Jo Ann) of
Rockville and Christopher D. Dobson of Terre Haute; a brother, Kenneth A. Dobson
(Cheryl) of Baton Rogue, La.; two sisters, Patricia E. VanHosser (Ron) of Denver and
Jeanne D. Melson (Lawrence “Skip”) of Atlanta; six grandchildren, Kristin Dobson, Keri
Dobson, Joseph Dobson, Aaron Dobson, Benjamin Dobson and Emily Dobson; and family
friend, Mark Brown of Terre Haute.He was a member of Victory Christian Center and on
the board there, he enjoyed sailing, boating and fishing and was a ham radio operator.
Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E.
Springhill Drive, with Pastor Dana Coverstone officiating. Entombment will be in Roselawn
Memorial Park. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, in the funeral home. In
lieu of flowers, the family suggests that for those who desire, memorial contributions may
be made to Victory Christian Center.I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I

Pruett, Robert Lee    

ROSEDALE — Robert Lee “Bob” Pruett, 78, of Rosedale, died at 11:30 a.m. Thursday,
Jan. 1, 2009, at his daughter’s residence in Chandler, Ind. He was mechanic. He was born
on July 8, 1930, in Linton. His wife of 55 years, Maurine Ruth Jenkins Pruett, whom he
married March 4, 1950, died April 23, 2005.Survivors include two daughters, Linda Kay
(Samuel G.) Hoar and Sheila Maria (Michael J.) Murphy; one son, Robert Alan (Sandra L.)
Pruett; son-in-law, Bosko Maksimovich; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Robert was a well-loved and hard-working man who survived the Great Depression. He
had worked since he was seven years old, picking up coal on the railroad tracks to sell or
give to neighbors. He mowed grass and did several odd job, until he was employed at age
10, by Leo Cox, to pick strawberries and make ice deliveries, haul coal, grain, and trash.
During the World War II, he was employed by Harvey Froderman at Terre Haute Truck
Parts and worked to dismantle vehicles for the steel shortage. Robert then worked as a
mechanic for Tumpane War Depot rebuilding Army trucks, tanks and amphibian ducks.
After the war, he worked as a mechanic for Pappy Peters Auto sales in until he was re-
employed by Mr. Froderman, at Chevrolet, as a day mechanic and night wrecker driver.
Bob worked as a mechanic and retired from American Brass/Anaconda/Alcan of Terre
Haute after 291/2 years and also owned a small farm in the town of Atherton, Ind. He
enjoyed raising and caring for his farm animals and helping his neighbors. He was named
“mayor of Atherton” by his neighbors and friends.Roberts work is now over. Robert can
now rest beside his beloved wife; his daughter, Sherri Lynn (Pruett) Maksimovich; mother,
Doris Uland Harmon; and stepfather, Oscar Harmon.Graveside services are 11 a.m.
Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, in Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery in North Terre Haute, with the
Rev. Tom Morgan officiating. Burial will follow. Memorials should friends so desire, may be
made to the Deaconess Hospice Care, 701 Garfield Avenue, Evansville, IN 47710 in his

Baker, Dr. Charles J.    

CLINTON — Dr. Charles J. Baker, colonel, U.S. Army Medical Corps, 68, died on Sunday,
Dec. 14, 2008, in his home in Northridge, Calif. He was born in Clinton, to Charlie and
Marie Baker, on Aug. 15, 1940. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1958, and
received a bachelor of science in pharmacy at Purdue University and his doctorate of
pediatric medicine from IUPUI in Indianapolis. He served the county of Los Angles as
director of the Pediatric Juvenile Court Health Services for 30 years. He retired from the
county of Los Angeles in 2002 and from the U.S. Army Reserve in 2004.He was a member
of the American Public Health Association, Jerusalem Lodge 99 and the Elks Lodge. For
14 years, he served as a member of the board of directors of the National Commission on
Correctional Healthcare and on the Advisory Board of Covenant House California. In
November, 2008, he was presented with the Spirit of Volunteerism Award from the John
Wesley Community Health Association of the County of Los Angles.He was preceded in
death by his father, Charlie Baker; and stepfather, Tom McKay.Survivors include his life
partner of over 40 years, Art Acres; his mother, Marie Baker McKay of Fairview Park;
brothers, Ken Baker and wife Kay of Surprise, Ariz., and Rick Baker and wife Teresa of
Fairview Park; and stepsisters, Cathy Faulstich and husband Bill of Danville, Ill., and
Tommy Perry and husband Dwayne of Worthington, Ohio; and several nieces and
nephews.Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in Roselawn Memory
Chapel, in Terre Haute. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 140 and
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6653. Frist Funeral Home in Clinton is handling the

Russell, Virginia M.    

Virginia M. Russell, 92, formerly Terre Haute, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, in Jackson,
Mich. She was co-owner of the Eastside Tavern for 39 years. Virginia was born on Sept. 7,
1916, in Ft. Wayne, to William Mabe and Theresa Deck Mabe. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Paul Russell, who passed away in 1973.Survivors include her son,
Charles Whitesell and his wife Yasuko of San Antonio; daughter, Beatrice Powell of
Jackson; sister, Mary Whitlock of Terre Haute; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine
Yaraschefski. Virginia was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Prayers will begin at
9:20 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in Callahan and Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th
Street, followed by mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick Catholic Church with
the Rev. Rick Ginther officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is
scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, in the funeral home.  
Smith, Theodore Raymond    

Theodore “Ted” Raymond Smith, 70, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, in Terre Haute Regional
Hospital. He was born on Aug. 8, 1938, the second son of Raymond James and Drusilla
Frances Sheperd Smith. He married Nancy Priscilla McClain on June 28, 1959, and she
preceded him in death by six months.He was a military policeman in the U.S. Army in the
early 1960s, serving in Germany. He was a decorated sharpshooter and was part of the
security team when President John F. Kennedy was touring there.He was employed by
Ruben H. Donnelley Company, American Family Insurance, owner/operator of Beaver
Carpet Cleaning, Cinergy travel crew, owner/operator of Express Courier and the Apple
House.He is survived by his son, Todd Raymond (Debbie) Smith; grandsons, Josh
Altmanshofer and Zachary Raymond Smith; brother, C. Fred (Sharon) Smith; sisters-in-
law, Jeannine Smith and Linda Smith; mother-in-law, Helen McClain; brother-in-law, John
(Becky) McClain; special cousin, Don (Debbie) Sheperd; other cousins, nephews and
nieces.He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife; and brothers, James and
Richard Smith. He enjoyed camping with his family, bowling and his animals. He was a
member of Union Christian Church.Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7,

Waltermire, Kay Lorraine    

Kay Lorraine Waltermire, 60, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at 4:25 a.m. in
Waltermire and Lorraine E. (Daily) Waltermire. Survivors include four brothers, Gordon
Waltermire of Terre Haute, Dennis Waltermire (Sally) of Liberty Lake, Wash., Rick
Waltermire (Brenda) of Chesterfield, Mo., and Gary Waltermire (Nancy) of Terre Haute;
and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.She
attended St. Ann Catholic Church.Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7,
2009, in Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, with Sister Connie

Kline, James A.    

James A. Kline, 92, of Terre Haute, passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2009, at Meadows
Manor East Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center. He was born July 23, 1916, in
Indianapolis, to Charles Kline and Mary List Kline. He married Virginia Clayton on June 21,
1941, and she preceded him in death in February 2006.Survivors includes seven nieces
and nephews, Dick and Loann Kline of Naples, Fla., Susan and Bob Chalfont of Muncie,
Lisa and Bill Arnett of Cincinnati, Barbara and Jim Hammond of Corrales, N.M., Janice
Kline and Randy Fisher of Lexington, Ky., Jim and Judy Clayton of Palm Harbor, Fla., and
Tom and Pat Clayton of Terre Haute. He also was preceded in death by his parents.James
served in the SeeBees during World War II, and was a graduate of the Gerstmeyer High
School. He was a member of St. Mark United Church of Christ, Fraternal Order of the Elks,
Gideons International, and the Light House Mission.Services are 11 a.m. Friday at
Thomas Funeral Home, 2200 N. 13th St., with the Rev. Tim Fagg officiating. Entombment

Laxen, Ruth Ann Poland   

Ruth Ann Poland Laxen, 102, formerly of Terre Haute, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2009. She
was a longtime resident of Terre Haute for 85 years. She was a former teacher at Warren
Elementary School, and was principal at Crawford Elementary School. She was the
beloved wife of her husband of 63 years, Rexford Laxen, who preceded her in death.She
was the devoted mother of Barbara R. Boyd and Richard Laxen. Also survived by four
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.She was a member of World Gospel Church
and Order of Eastern Star.Entombment will be 2 p.m. Friday at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Smith, Barbara Rose   

Barbara Rose Smith, 64, of Terre Haute, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Methodist
Hospital in Indianapolis, after a brief illness. She was born on April 3, 1944, in Vigo
County, the daughter of Kenneth Fell Sr. and Mary Anna Dragon Fell. She was a lifetime
resident of Vigo County and a charter member of the New Life Fellowship Church in Terre
Haute. She loved to travel, shopping and visiting with friends and family. She was
co-owner with her husband of Avilion Restaurant in Seelyville. She will be deeply missed
by all who knew her.She was preceded in death by her father; brothers, Norman Fell and
Hershel Fell; brothers-in-law, Jerry Dewey and Phillip Miller; and sister-in-law, Ruth
Fell.Survivors include her husband, Robert J. Smith Jr.; her mother of Terre Haute;
brothers, Kenneth W. Fell Jr. of Pimento and Gordan Fell and wife Debbie of Terre Haute;
sisters, Mary Alice Dewey of Terre Haute and Joyce A. Miller Cook and husband Milo of
Belpre, Ohio; sister-in-law, Sue Fell of Terre Haute; former daughter-in-law, Jo Ellin
Patterson and husband Clark; several nieces and nephews; extended family members and

Evans, Wilma J.    

Wilma J. Evans, 76, of Terre Haute, died at 7:01 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in Terre
Haute Regional Hospital. She was born on Sept. 21, 1932, to Harold and Wanetah
(Coombes) Martin. She was a machine operator at Pfizer Inc. Vigo Plant, where she
retired.Survivors include her husband, Delmar L. Evans; one daughter, Karen Owen and
her husband Daniel of Terre Haute; one stepdaughter, Pam Wampler and her husband
Ron of Bloomington; two stepsons, Daniel Evans of Bloomington and Delmar Evans Jr.
and his wife Janene of Terre Haute; two brothers, Bill Martin and his wife Patricia of New
Haven and Harold Martin and his wife Betty of Gainesville, Fla.; two sisters, Janet Swift and
her husband Bill of West Terre Haute and Gayle Decker and her husband George of West
Terre Haute; nine grandchildren, David Owen and his wife Lisa, Chuck Owen and his wife
Amanda, Courtney Owen, Nicholas Voll, Stacey Voll, Dee Evans, Belinda Freeman and
her husband Jonathan, Ryan Evans and Matthew Evans; and three great-grandchildren,
David Owen, Devan Freeman and Darren Suits. She was preceded in death by her first
husband, Bryon William Voll; and a son, Kenneth Voll, in 1987.She was a member of the

Weir, Rev. Harley L.    

Rev. Harley L. Weir, 82, of Terre Haute, died in Terre Haute Regional Emergency Room
at 8:08 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009. He was born in Vigo County, on March 3, 1926, to
John and Margaret Marie Moody Weir. He was pastor emeritus of Christ Temple Church.
He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving as a pharmacist’s mate. After his
discharge, he attended Brown’s Business College and also was working as a pharmacist
at Dawson and Meagher Drug Store for many years. While working there, he was called
into Pentecostal ministry, was ordained in 1958 and pastored Christ Temple Church for 13
years, from 1960 to 1973. He was affiliated with several Pentecostal ministerial
association. During this same time period, he was a pharmaceutical buyer for E.H. Bindley
and Company. After his retirement, he then worked at the former Meis Brothers in the men’
s department and for Nancy Nutrition Center.Survivors include his wife, Naomi (Stout)
Weir, whom he married on Oct. 30, 1946; one daughter, Sheila Weir of Terre Haute; two
sons, Dennis Weir and his wife Vicky of Greencastle and Gary Weir and his wife Jennifer
of Terre Haute; one brother, the Rev. Merrill Weir and his wife Sue; one sister, Mae St.
John; grandchildren, Jonathan Weir, Tonia Dibble, Heidi Madsen and Olivia Weir; great-
grandchildren, Kaitlyn Dibble, Lauren Dibble and Jeremiah Weir; two stepgrandchildren,
Britney Dibble and Seth Madsen; several close nieces and nephews; and three special
friends, Bill Joseph, Martha Johns and Don Elmore.He was preceded in death by one
brother, Robert Weir; and one sister, Frances Hamilton.Funeral services are 1 p.m.

Weir and Merrill Weir Jr. officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park with military

Beard, Lois May Frederick    

Lois May Frederick Beard, 76, of Terre Haute, died at 2:37 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in
Union Hospital. She was born on Feb. 18, 1932, in Joliet, Ill., to Peter Edward Frederick II
and Isabelle Ann Paul Frederick.Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Ann Reagin
(husband John F. “Fred”); one son, David Michael Beard (wife Amy Homburg Beard); five
granddaughters, Beth Reagin Kendall (husband Brian) and their children, Evan and
Aidan; Pam Reagin White (husband Cameron) and their children, Nolan, Dru, and Reagin;
Kelly Beard McVey (husband Scott) and their daughter, Kyar; Kristy Beard Norton
(husband Elmer) and their children, Hannah, Jayce, and Zane; and Kimberly Beard (Tom
Lee) and daughter, Madison; two sisters, Rosemary Patore (husband Ted) and Pat Wiiki;
one brother, Peter Frederick III (wife Lucy); one sister-in-law, Jerry Frederick; and four
nephews, Peter, Steven, Keith and Danny. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Charles Robert “Bob” Beard, who passed away on Feb. 6, 1999; and one brother, Paul
Frederick. Per her wishes, there is no visitation or services. Callahan-DeBaun Funeral
Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, in charge of arrangements. Entombment is in Roselawn

Denny, Ruby L.    

Ruby L. Denny, 86, of Terre Haute, passed away early Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, in Union
Hospital. She was born on Dec. 30, 1922, in Terre Haute, the daughter of James Arnold
Sr. and Leta Ann (Lewes) Arnold. She had worked in the Quaker Maid Factory and was a
member of the Rio Grande Baptist Church. Her hobbies included fishing and playing
cards. Survivors include her son, James L. Davis and wife Glenda of Indianapolis; seven
grandchildren, Rena Davis Garibay of New Harmony, Jimmy Davis of Florida, Debbie
Davis, and Donnie Davis and wife Sophia, all of Terre Haute, David Davis and wife Terra
of Ramona, California, Danny Davis and wife Emily of San Diego and Jeremy Davis and
wife Angie of Terre Haute; 11 great-grandchildren, a sister, Rose E. Bennett of Danville,
Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Jacque K. Davis of Terre Haute; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Kraycsi of
Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents;
first husband, Joseph C. Davis; second husband, Perry W. Denny; son, Donald Davis;
daughter, Jane White; great-grandson, Cody Davis; and brother, James Arnold. Visitation
is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton Street. Services
are 2 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park.  
Price, Cordelia    

Cordelia Price, 84, of Terre Haute, passed away early Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, in her
residence. She was born on Oct. 26, 1924, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Charles Huff
and Margaret (Prawl) Huff. She married Robert Price and he preceded her in death.
Cordelia was a homemaker. She was a member of the Hulman Street Wesleyan Church
and her hobbies included bingo and quilting. Survivors include five children, Mary Lou
Kutch of Terre Haute, Larry Price and wife Dixie of Rockville, Madonna Nichols and
Margaret Petty and husband Joe, all of Terre Haute and Ralph Price and wife Donna of
Rosedale; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren;
several stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She as preceded in death
by her parents; her husband; son, Harold Price, granddaughter; and great-grandson.
Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton Street, with the
Rev. Dan Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8
p.m. today in the funeral home.  
Penrod, Leighly I.   

Leighly I. Penrod, 83, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at Union Hospital. He
was born April 22, 1925, in Libertyville, to George Penrod and Clara McCullam Penrod. He
married Betty Shannon, and she preceded him in death. He served in the U.S. Navy
SeeBees during World War II. He then worked for Stran Steel until retirement. Survivors
include three sons, Richard Penrod and wife Cindy, and Leighly Penrod, all of Terre
Haute, and Danny Penrod of Clinton; six grandchildren, George Penrod of Houston,
Sonya Caton, Steven Corter, Jennifer Cottom and husband Shane, William Penrod and
wife Ashley, and Samantha Cobvix, all of Terre Haute; six great-grandchildren, Tiffany
Caton, Dillon Caton, Carolyn Penrod, Olivia Cottom, Juan Cobvix and Selena Cobvix; two
sisters, Louise Colletti of New Porte Riche, Fla., and Irene Baker of Little Rock, Ark.; a
brother, Ted Penrod of Danville, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. He also was
preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Owen and Paul Penrod; and two sisters,
Grace Sanquenetti and Bonnie Cobble.Memorial services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday
at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with the Rev. Dick Smith officiating.
Cremation will follow, with inurnment at Roselawn Memorial Park.  
DeHart, Bradley Allan    

Bradley Allan DeHart, 41, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, from injuries
sustained in an automobile accident. He was a coal miner employed with the Sunrise Coal
Company in Carlisle. He also had been a tri-axle truck driver, which he owned and
operated for many years prior to his employment with the coal mine. He was born Jan. 20,
1967, in Terre Haute, to Bill DeHart and Judy Fry DeHart. Survivors include two
daughters, Hailey Ann DeHart and her mother Anne DeHart, and Chloee DeHart and her
mother Amy Swearingen; his father, Bill DeHart of Terre Haute; his mother and stepfather,
Judy and Don Haskell of Riley; three brothers, Kenny DeHart and wife Pam, Kirk DeHart
and wife Diana, and Brian DeHart and Cindy; three nephews, Kyle DeHart, Derek DeHart,
and Cody DeHart; a niece, Felicia DeHart; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was
a 1985 graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School, where he was a member of the
baseball team. He had been very involved as a softball player for many years with the
American Softball Association league at Terre Haute, and was an avid golfer. He also had
been very involved with the 4-H program, both as a young man showing livestock, and
more recently being involved with his daughters and their livestock projects. Funeral
services are noon Thursday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., West Terre
Haute, with the Rev. Rick Swan officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, and prior to services Thursday. The family suggests that, if
friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Brad DeHart Memorial
Fund, which will be used to benefit the Vigo County 4-H swine department. Envelopes will
be available at the funeral home.  
Smith, Evelyn M.    

CLINTON — Evelyn M. Smith, 98, of Evansville, and formerly of Clinton, died at 1;20 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at Angel River Health and Rehabilitation Center, in Newburg. She
was born Sept. 25, 1910, in Terre Haute, to Theodore Bauer and Anna Marie Boston
Bauer. She was secretary at Clinton High School for many years, from 1962 to 1977. Her
husband, John R. “Cappy” Smith, whom she married April 19, 1936, died in 1961.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen Marie Pesavento and husband Jerry of Evansville;
one grandson, Dr. Christopher Pesavento and his wife Dr. Lara Pesavento of
Indianapolis; one niece, Gretchen Jennermann of Terre Haute; and two great-nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ted Bauer; and a sister, Helen
Bauer-Parker.She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Clinton Lioness Club,
Clinton Tri Kappa, and Wiley High School class of 1928. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at
Karanovich-Giovanini Funeral Home, 408 Vine St., with the Rev. Ray Wilkins officiating.
Burial is at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute. Visitation is one hour prior to services

Penry, Vivian C.   

Vivian C. Penry, 94, of Terre Haute, died at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, in
Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on May 18, 1914, in Parke
County, to John Wesley Collings and Gladys Swaim Collings. She graduated from
Marshall, Indiana High School and attended Indiana State Normal. She worked as a
waitress at Turkey Run Inn and at her father’s Brazil, grocery store, where she met her
future husband, Herschel from Prospect, Ohio.She married Herschel, on Feb. 10, 1937, in
Reelsville, and became a homemaker. Vivian and Herschel were married for 60 years. She
served on the Democrat election board and on various PTO organizations in her son’s
school. She was an accomplished pianist and passed on her love of music to her sons.
She played for the various churches she and her family attended. She was a member of
Grace United Methodist Church and First Baptist.She was preceded in death by her
brother, Carroll Collings; her parents; her husband; brother-in-law, Floyd Green; and
daughter-in-law, Sharron.Survivors include her sister, Irene Greene Gillispie of Dallas; two
sons, John (Jean) and Jerry (Jane) of Terre Haute; six grandchildren, Janna (John)
Woodason of South Vienna, Ohio, Shawn (Jim) Blackburn of Okinawa, Japan, Jack
(Rebekah) Penry of Terre Haute, Vincent (Melissa) Penry of Oxford, Conn., Amy (Justin)
Zoeller of Derby, Conn., and Jay (Samantha) Penry of Colby, Wis.; 11 great-
grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Pat McPherson and Betty Fout; brother-in-law, Jack Penry;
and several nieces and nephews from Ohio.Funeral services are 3 p.m. today in
Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton Street, with Pastor Bernie Jackson officiating.

Brian Jay Mears, 52, of Terre Haute, went home to heaven Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009,
following an extended illness. He was born on Nov. 11, 1956, in Linton, to Sandra Jo
(Snoddy) Mears and Billie Joe Mears Sr. Brian loved the outdoors, watching birds and
listening to music.He was preceded in death by his grandparents; stepfather, Willis L.
Blair; and nephews Michael and Christopher Abel. Survivors include his mother, Sandra Jo
Blair of Terre Haute; his father, Billie Joe Mears and wife Patricia of Punta Gorda, Fla.;
four sisters, Donna Blankenship and husband Richard of Shelburn, Bonnie Abel and
husband John of Terre Haute, Pamela Girton and husband Barry of Brazil and Rita
Johnson and husband Edward, Bolingbrook, Ill.; three brothers, Roger Blair of
Indianapolis, Billie Joe Mears Jr. of Punta Gorda, Fla., and James Blair of Terre Haute; an
uncle, Michael Snoddy and wife Janice of Sullivan; aunts, Gladys Blair of Speedway and
Gila Bucy and husband Darwin of Sarasota, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Dennis Robins and

Flossie L. Palmer, of Terre Haute, passed away at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009,
in Plymouth, at the home of her daughter.She was preceded in death by her husband,
John W. Palmer, in 1998.Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Georgette and
Rodger Rader; grandchildren, Ben and Lynndi Rader, Sara Rader and Nick Rader; and
great-grandchildren, Maddie and Benjamin, all of Plymouth. Also surviving are several
special nieces and nephews.Catholic funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan.

Adams, Ronald Wayne    

Ronald Wayne Adams, 75, of Terre Haute, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, in Meadows
Manor North Retirement and Convalescent Center. He was born June 21, 1933, in Terre
Haute, to Harry J. Adams and Esther Simpson Adams. Survivors include his former wife,
Barbara Kleiser Adams; two daughters, Paula Adams Metheny and her husband Steve,
and Carolyn Adams Burns and her husband Paul, all of Terre Haute; two sons, Jeffrey
Wayne Adams and his wife Nancy of Petersburg and John Clark Adams and his wife
Ramona of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, Corey and Alina Adams, Megan M. Miller and
her husband, Matthew, Mark and Mallory Metheny, Matthew, Christopher and Lauren
Vidal; and a great-grandson, Aiden Miller. He also is survived by several cousins. Ronald
graduated from Indiana University in 1955, and was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity.
He was owner and general manager of Adams Pontiac-Datsun, Inc., and later was owner
and operator of The Box Shoppe. He was a lifelong active member of Central Presbyterian
Church, where he served on the boards of the Trustees, the Deacons and Session, as
well as serving as treasurer for many years. His community service included past board
member and chairman of Wabash Valley Chapter of the Red Cross, past board member of
the Salvation Army, past board member of the Chamber of Commerce, and was a
volunteer for the Boy Scouts, Junior Achievement, United Way, Indiana State University,
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.Funeral services
will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, in Callahan and Hughes Funeral
Home, 605 S. 25th Street, with the Rev. Lant Davis officiating. Private burial will be in
Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 18, 2009.

Esther Josephine Wright Searcy, 96 of Charleston, S.C., entered into eternal rest on the
afternoon of Jan. 15, 2009. She was born in Clinton, Ind., on Jan. 29, 1912, to George
Freeman Wright and Philippena Ummel Wright. She became a registered nurse at Union
Hospital. Esther was blessed with a wonderfully fulfilling life, and made many meaningful
and lasting friendships along the way.She is survived by her son, David Searcy and wife
Linda of Charleston, S.C.; her stepdaughter, Juanita Givens of Bradenton, Fla.;
grandchildren, Carla Norville and husband Mitch of Boston, Darla Zacharias and husband
Jim of Lawrenceville, Ga., Diana VanBenschoten and husband Van of Charleston, Jeff
Searcy and wife Johnel of Anderson, S.C., Randy Stoops and wife Linda of Palmetto, Fla.,
Lana McInnis and husband John of Palmetto; and 13 great-grandchildren.Esther is
preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Searcy; sisters, Opal Ralston,
Irene Beal, and Lois Crowder; and her brother, Virgil Wright.Visitation will be held on

Tyler, Virginia Ruth    

Virginia Ruth Tyler, 83, of Terre Haute, died at 8:35 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Union
Hospital. She was born July 18, 1925, in Mecca, the fourth child of the late Robert L.
Shopp and Ruth Smith Shopp. She was a homemaker. Her husband of 41 years, Robert
M. Tyler, whom she married May, 19, 1942, in Mecca, preceded her in death, June 17,
1983. Survivors include her sons, Don R. Tyler and wife Sue of Terre Haute, and James E.
Tyler and wife Margaret of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Kim Long and husband
Robert, Ruth Ann Tyler (deceased), James R. Tyler and wife Jennifer, Stephanie Ruggles
and husband Jason; five great-grandchildren, Joshua Tyler, Peyton Tyler, Ella Tyler,
Emma Ruggles, and Jace Ruggles; one great-great-grandchild, Joshua Gage Tyler; her
half-brother, Richard Myers; and several nieces and nephews. Virginia had lived in Terre
Haute most of her life and was loved greatly by her family. Funeral services are noon
Wednesday at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with the Rev. Keith E. Taylor
officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Wednesday. Burial will follow at Roselawn

Boswell II, Robert Franklin    

Robert Franklin Boswell II, 55, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., passed away Saturday, Jan. 17,
2009, in his residence. He was born on March 16, 1953, in Terre Haute, the son of Robert
Boswell and Evelyn (Roman) Boswell. He married Mary Jane Davis and she survives.
Robert graduated from Indiana State University with a degree in criminal justice. He was a
supervisor for the Faneuil Corp., in Deerfield. He was a loving father and husband.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years; a son, Robert F. Boswell III of Florida; a sister, Alice
Matherly of Terre Haute; nephews, Bill and Bob Matherly, both of Terre Haute and Craig D.
Sklenar of Chicago; nieces, Heather Johns of Indianapolis and Kylie and Adam Davis of
Caribou, Maine; and an uncle, Roy Roman of Terre Haute.He was preceded in death by
his parents. Visitation is noon to 1 p.m. Friday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton
Street. Services are 1 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Spear officiating. Burial will follow in the
Roselawn Memorial Park.

Betty Edwards Wilson, 62, of Terre Haute, died at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009,
in Royal Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on April 12, 1946, in
Terre Haute, to Foster Edwards and Myrtle Jordan.Survivors include her husband of 40
years, John Wilson; son, Danny Wilson and his wife Tammy; daughter, Lisa Wilson and
Chuck; two brothers, Frank Edwards and his wife Sandy of Texas and John Edwards and
his wife Roseann; sister, Jeanie Young and her husband John of Kentucky; six
grandchildren, Cierra, Heather, Kevin, Keith, Bryant and Jeffrey; mother-in-law, Virginia

Sears, Barbara Lee    

Barbara Lee Sears, 65, of Terre Haute, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, in the
Union Hospital. She was born on June 28, 1943, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Kale
Walker and Lucille (Crews) Walker. She married Billy Wayne Sears and he survives.
Barbara was a homemaker. She was baptized at O’Fallen Christian Church and a member
of the Marine Corps League. Her hobbies included fishing and the outdoors. Survivors
include her husband; two sons, William Sears and wife Judi of St. Peters, Mo., and Terry
Sears of Terre Haute; a daughter, Sheri Gowens and husband Mike of Panama City, Fla.;
six grandchildren, Brittany Flowers and husband James of St. Charles, Mo., Korri and
Stephanie Sears, both of St. Peters, Kale Sears of Alton, Mo., Bryce and Karagin Gowens,
both of Panama City; six siblings, Shirley Weaver and husband Gene of South Bend, Betty
Jackson and husband Charles of Terre Haute, Sue Rogers of Kansas City, Dave Walker
and wife Linda, Diane Hochstetler and Jack Walker and wife Kathy, all of Terre Haute; and
several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Helen
Weaver; and brother, Larry Walker.Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Roselawn Funeral

McKimmy, Sandra Lou Eldridge    

Sandra Lou Eldridge McKimmy, 58, of West Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord on
Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute, after a short battle with cancer.
She was an employee of Glas-Col Apparatus in Terre Haute for 31 years.Survivors include
her lifelong friends, Eileen Murdock, Rick and Peggy Murdock, Troy and Susan Murdock
and their children and grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert
and Mary Lou Eldridge.She attended First United Methodist Church of West Terre Haute.
She was also an avid bowler for many years. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Monday in
Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. Third St., in West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Allen
Relford officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday
and prior to services on Monday. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial
contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society with envelopes available in the
funeral home.  
Burnett VanNess III  

Burnett VanNess III, 69 of Terre Haute passed away Monday evening, Jan. 26, 2009. He
was born March 11, 1939, in Cincinnati, to Burnett VanNess Jr. and Lela Elizabeth Wilson
VanNess. He was a member of Free and Accepted Masons, and was a U.S. Navy veteran,
who worked as a test parachutist. He loved to fish when he was able. He is survived by his
wife, Beth Buchanan VanNess, whom he married in July 1963; children, Michael VanNess
and wife Mindy of Terre Haute, David VanNess and wife Christi of Carmel, Amy O'Leary of
Westfield, and Andrew VanNess and wife Dana of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Megan,
Michael, and Haley VanNess, Caitlyn and Jacob O'Leary, and Benjamin and Zachary
VanNess; and his faithful and loving canine "Raggs." He was preceded in death by his
parents; and a sister, Nancy Russell. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at Roselawn Funeral
Home, 7500 N. Clinton St. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m.
until services Thursday. Graveside military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 972.  
Pruitt, Mary C. Kutchen    

Mary C. Kutchen Pruitt, of North Olmsted, Ohio, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at
her residence. She formerly was a long time resident of Terre Haute. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Cecil; and her brothers, John and Charles Kutchan. She is survived
by her daughters, Cecilia Treese, and Pat Cochran and husband C. Jeff Cochran; her
grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Cochran, Jason Treese, and Tammy Treese-Sptizer
and husband Richard; and her sister, Rose Bidiva.Graveside services are 2 p.m. Thursday
