in Union Hospital. She was born Aug. 17, 1945 at Terre Haute to Maxine and Morris
Gibbons. Survivors include brothers, Michael and Jeffery Gibbons; six grandchildren and
one great-grandchild. Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home with

David W. Frederick Sr., 60, went to be with the Lord at 4:41 p.m Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008,
after a lengthy illness. He was an auto mechanic for Hertz Rent-a-Car and Yellow Cab and
also had worked at Hardware Supply and Calvary Cemetery. He was born Nov. 29, 1947,
in Terre Haute, to Hobert Frederick and Faerie (Vaughn) Frederick. Survivors include his
former wife and best friend, Debbie Elsberry of Paris, Ill.; his father of Terre Haute; one
son, David W. Frederick Jr. of Terre Haute; four daughters, Tammy J. Frederick, Amanda
Julian and husband Jimmy, Beth Ann Frederick, and Ashley Jackson and husband Jeremy,
all of Terre Haute; eight grandsons, Matthew Frederick, Blake Frederick, Johnathan Roy,
Kristofer Julian, Kolton Julian, Jace Jackson, Karter Jackson, and Brayden Jackson; one
granddaughter, Andrea Myers; one brother, Larry Frederick and wife Carol; sisters-in-law,
Marilyn Milligan and husband Bob, Glenda Ashley and friend Jim Rogers, and Lisa Linville
and husband Keith; brother-in-law, Bobby Carpenter; daughter-in-law, Brooke Kempf and
husband Jason; former father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bob and Dora Carpenter; and
several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother; a brother, Kenny
Frederick; and brother-in-law, James Ashley.He was a member of Cross Tabernacle
Church and a former member of Faith Wesleyan Church. He was a 1966 graduate of
Garfield High School. He was a loving father, “pawpaw,” and friend. He enjoyed sports,
cutting grass and helping people, he was a devoted worker.Funeral services are 11 a.m.
today in Cross Tabernacle Church, with Pastors Keith Taylor and Jack Barnard officiating.

Tonetti, Cecilia Ann
Cecilia Ann Tonetti, 92, of Terre Haute died Sunday Aug. 3, 2008, in Royal Oaks Health
Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Linton, to Patrick Burns
and Margaret Short Burns. Her husband, Arthur Lee Tonetti, preceded her in death in
1944. She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Roberts and her husband James; a
daughter-in-law, Beverly Tonetti; three grandchildren, Arthur Tonetti Jr. and wife Joanna,
Debra Harris and husband Jim, and Julie Roberts; several great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son,
Arthur Lee Tonetti; and four brothers, Patrick Burns, John Burns, Jim Burns, and Matt
Burns. She had attended both St. Mary’s Village Church and Sacred Heart Catholic
Church.Friends and family will gather at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008, at Callahan-
DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., for a procession to Sacred Heart Catholic
Church for mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday,

Helen L. Reynolds, 82, of Terre Haute passed away early Sunday morning, Aug. 3, 2008,
at Davis Gardens Health Center. She was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Terre Haute to
Ferdinand Louis and Helen Vermillion Faust. Her husband, Donald Reynolds, preceded
her in death in November 1993.Survivors include three children, Margo Lewis and

and Ruth Lemke and husband Thomas of Crown Point; grandchildren, Susan Hudson and

and Mark Lemke of Ashville, N.C..; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Jeffrey, and Leah Wells,

nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Ruth Watson.She
graduated from Gerstmeyer High School. She was an active member of New Hope
Community Church of God, and was a member of Order of Eastern Star. She loved

SHELBURN — George Dohovets, 46, of Shelburn, passed away peacefully at 10 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, with his mother at his side. He
was born Aug. 21, 1961, in Pontiac, Mich., to Gezell and George Dohovets. Survivors
include his mother; one sister, Teresa Dohovets; two nieces; and many friends. He was
preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Tibor.Graveside services are 11 a.m.

Marrs, Juanita R.
MARSHALL, Ill. — Juanita R. Marrs, 87, of Sullivan, formerly of Mount Zion and Marshall,
died at 10:15 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, in the Mason Point in Sullivan. She was born
July 2, 1921, in Jasonville, Ind., to Charlie and Mary Blaker Clark. She married Rolan
McCammon in 1940, in Jasonville, and he preceded her in death in 1954. She then
married Benton Marrs in 1968, in Marshall, and he preceded her in death in 1975.
Juanita, along with her husband, Benton, owned and operated Marrs Funeral Home in
Marshall. Survivors include her sons, Terry McCammon and wife Ellen of Wilmette, and
Barry McCammon and wife Lila of Sullivan; grandchildren, Terry W. McCammon II of Terre
Haute, Ind., Ryan McCammon of Groton, Conn., Jared McCammon of Decatur, Elizabeth
McCammon of Atlanta, and Keith McCammon of Wilmette; great-grandchildren, Cassidy
and Zachary McCammon, both of Terre Haute, and Alexander McCammon of Groton.She
was a member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and
Order of the Eastern Star. She loved playing cards and was active in several bridge
groups. She was very proud of her grandchildren and enjoyed attending all of their
sporting and school activities, and later she thoroughly enjoyed her three great-
grandchildren. She fought a brave and courageous battle with cancer and her family
would like to personally thank Drs. Fritz and Esparaz and their staffs, Lincolnland Hospice
and the staff of Mason Point.Memorial services are 11 a.m. CDT Thursday at the church,
with the Rev. Mark Kaley officiating. A reception for family and friends will be one hour

Johnston, John W.
John W. Johnston, 82, of Terre Haute passed away Monday, Aug. 4, 2008, in his home.
He was born Feb. 22, 1926 in Terre Haute to John and Florence Lovellette Johnston. He
retired from ALCAN, where he worked as a supervisor. He was a 62-year member of the
American Legion Post 104, and was a lifetime member of the DAV (Disabled American
Veterans). He was a member of Barbour Avenue United Methodist Church.He served
under General Patton in the European Theater in the United States Army during World
War II, where he was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Good Conduct Medal
when he was honorably discharged in 1946. Survivors include three children, John W.
Johnston and wife Sandy of Terre Haute, Linda Plunkett and husband Rick of Sun Prairie,
Wis., and Jeanne Ellis and husband Myron of West Terre Haute. Also surviving are
grandchildren, J.R., Stephen, and James Johnston all of Terre Haute, Matt and Chris
Plunkett of Chicago, Shane Bryan and wife Denise of Terre Haute, and Dustin Mills of
West Terre Haute. Other survivors include two great-grandsons, Madden and Colton
Bryan; one niece, and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his
wife of over 50 years, Mary Kay Johnston. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Roselawn
Funeral Home. Private family graveside services will be on Saturday in Roselawn

Carpenter, Helen L.
Helen L. Carpenter, 84, of Terre Haute, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2008, in Royal
Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Feb. 12, 1924, in West
Union, Ill., the daughter of Hurlis H. Brown and Goldi Bartlett Brown. She married Henry
“Hank” Carpenter and he survives. Helen worked as a press operator and then a mail
opener for CBS Corporation for more than 35 years. She was a member of the Hungarian
Hall and Ladies Auxiliary Post 104. She enjoyed working on crossword puzzles. Survivors
include her husband; a daughter, Candace Fournier of Houston; two grandchildren; close
friends, Dick and Norma Hess, Myron and Leona Linnaberry, Glenn “Buzz” Carpenter,
and Dave and Jamie Hensley, all of Terre Haute. She was preceded in death by her
parents; a sister, Mary Schattuck; and four brothers, Walter, Howard, Glenn and Bobby

Pauline A. “Lefty” Bell, 87, of Terre Haute, died at 10:40 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, in
Union Hospital. She was born on Sept. 3, 1920, in Terre Haute, to John Huffman and
Clara Purdy. She was a homemaker.Survivors include two sons, Raymond Bell and his
wife Connie and Robert William Bell; daughter, Ruth Thompson and her husband
Charles; brother, Gary Huffman; sisters, Betty Sheese and Lorene Young; 10
grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; several
nieces and nephews; an ex-daughter-in-law, Des Lee Bell; and her best friend and little
toy poodle, “Peppie”.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64
years, the Rev. Robert Thomas Bell; one sister, Margie Woods; and three brothers,
Larry Huffman, Clarence Huffman and Bush Huffman.She loved to fish, hunt mushrooms
and pick any kind of berries. Her big heart helped many of those in need. She was an
avid bowler, sponsored many bowling leagues and received the senior bowling award in

Elizabeth Rose Taylor, 97, of Terre Haute, passed away at 6:30 pm on Saturday August
8, 2008 at Royal Oaks Healthcare Center. She was born on December 7, 1910 in
Greencastle, Indiana to Warnie L. Porter and Emily Hall Ward. She was employed by G.
C. Murphy in Terre Haute for 15 years prior to her retirement. Survivors include a cousin
and her caregiver, Phyllis Fulford of Terre Haute, cousins, Barbara Martin, Jason Martin
and wife Tammy, all of Lewis, Indiana, Glen Martin of Indianapolis, Vernon Ward and wife
Marion, and Wendell Ward and wife Helen all of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Also surviving are
very close and special friends, Fortunato and Louise Zanotti. She also has many other
cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kinchen Cobb Taylor,

Marjorie Richardson, 86, of Terre Haute died at 3 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at Union
Hospital. She was born Jan. 20, 1922, in West Terre Haute to George Washington and
Ruby Angeline Coler Pruiett. She was a homemaker. During World War II she was
employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Columbus, Ohio. Her husband, John
T. Richardson, preceded her in death in 1993.She is survived by three sons, John W.
Richardson and his wife Ruth of Bloomington, Gary A. Richardson of West Terre Haute,
and George A. Richardson and his wife Tracy of Terre Haute; one daughter, Ruby A.

retired from Paitson Brothers Heating and Cooling, where he worked in sales and

Richard R. “Dickie” Joy Jr., 52, of Terre Haute died at 12:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10,
2008, at Union Hospital. He was born Feb. 1, 1956, in Clinton to Richard R. Joy Sr. and
Sally Gibson Nicholson. He retired from Gibson Coal Co., where he worked in
maintenance. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Janice Hastings Joy; his stepfather,
Bill Nicholson; two daughters, Jamie Bass and husband Ryan, and Buffy Mickelson and
husband Larry; one brother, Dirk Joy; one sister, Julie Rieman; and grandchildren,
Madison Wycoff, Emma Bass, Jocelyn Mickelson, and Lawrence Mickelson Jr. He was
preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Laverne and Mildred Gibson, and
William and Goldie Joy; and one granddaughter at birth.He was active in 4-H, as a

Morge, Richard W.
Richard W. Morge, 64, of Terre Haute, passed away Wednesday morning in his
residence. He was born Nov. 3, 1943 in Terre Haute, the son of Richard A. Morge and
Helen Mae Bovenschulte Morge. Richard served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
He worked as a social worker in Sullivan for the state. He was a member of the United
Methodist Temple. His hobbies included golf and he also was a car enthusiast.
Survivors include a sister, Judy Morge of Terre Haute; three cousins, Mark Barnhart
and wife Linda of Terre Haute, David Barnhart of Maysville, Ky., and Robert Barnhart
and wife Sandy of Anna, Ohio; and second cousins, Don and Betty Bovenschulte of
Terre Haute. His parents preceded him. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at
the Thomas Funeral Home. Services are 2 p.m. with the Rev. Alan Rumble officiating.

Willa Jean Berry, 82, of Terre Haute, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17,
2008, in Community North Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born on March 23, 1926, in
Terre Haute to William Danner and Willa Francis Mendenhall.Survivors include her two
daughters, Laura Chiado and her husband Mike and Cathy Queisser and her husband
Tim of Indianapolis; five grandchildren, Nathan, Cory, and Kylie Queisser of
Indianapolis, Greg Ferres and Stephanie Hayes of Terre Haute; sister, Majorie Jane
Turner of Terre Haute; and five great-grandchildren, of Terre Haute.She was preceded
in death by her husband, Theodore Cecil Berry; her parents; and sister, Shirley Ann
Richards.She graduated from Garfield High School in the class of 1944. She was a
lifelong member of Maple Avenue Methodist Church where she was a member of the
Rachael Circle, She was employed by Social Security Administration in Terre Haute and
received several outstanding performance awards prior to her retirement. She was an
active member of the Colonial Dames and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Buena Chaney, 86, of Terre Haute, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, in his residence.
Buena was born Nov. 16, 1921, in Coxville, to Osmer Chaney and Mary E. Lowe
Chaney. He was a retired attorney from the Mann, Mann, Chaney, Johnson, Goodwin,
and Williams Law Office of Terre Haute. Survivors include his daughter, Lisa Baer and
her husband Thomas of Terre Haute; granddaughters, Crystal Baer Green and
husband Weldon of Terre Haute, Kathleen Baer-Truer of New York City, and Betsy Jo
Baer of Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Williams Chaney,
whom he married May 6, 1949; his parents; daughter, Tamara June Chaney Truer; and
brothers, Finley Chaney, Elmo Chaney, and Glen Chaney.Buena graduated from
Rosedale High School, Wabash College, and Indiana University School of Law. He was
the Indiana Republican State Chairman from 1967-1970 and Vigo County and 7th
District Republican Chairman. He was a past District Governor of the Lions Club, a life
member of the Elks, a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, and the Zorah
Shrine. Buena was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Board of Directors of Indiana
State Bank, and a member of both the Indiana and American Bar Associations. He was
a laboratory technician in the U.S. Army 21st Evacuation Hospital in the South Pacific
during World War II and a Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps.Funeral

Margaret Kathryn Schaefer, 84, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, Aug. 16,
2008. She was born on Aug. 4, 1924, to Charles and Helen Whitesell. She married
Robert Schaefer on June 23, 1945. She was a graduate of Wiley High School and had
worked at Hulman and Co., Montgomery Ward and the Vigo County School
Corporation, She was a member of St. Benedict’s Church. She enjoyed playing games
and cards, and belonged to the Y Senior Swim Club and Red Hat Society. Survivors
include two daughters, Kathy Powers and husband Dale of Terre Haute, Shirley Fulk
and husband Terry of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Chris Yamamoto and wife Millie of
Terre Haute, Kelley Brita and husband Dan of Carmel, Tiffany Powers of Branson, Mo.,

and Ruth Layne McKean. She was a retired school teacher, having taught at Riley
Elementary School for 29 years. Survivors include her husband, Clarence E. Vanatti,
whom she married Dec. 3, 1950; two sons, Brian E. Vanatti and wife Carla, and David
C. Vanatti; one daughter, Carol L. Vanatti; three brothers, Roger McKean and wife
Bessie, James O. McKean and wife Eileen, and Estel D. McKean and wife Pat; seven
grandchildren, Joshua Clarke, Beth Miller, Cayla Vanatti, Amanda Vanatti, Courtney
Vanatti, Andrew Vanatti, and James Tyler Vanatti; five great-grandchildren, Cydney
Miller, Conner Miller, Camden Miller, Brynlee Clarke, and Camden Clarke; and several
nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.She was a member of
Eastside Church of Christ, Senior Seekers at the church, Christian Women’s Club,
National Education Association, Retired Teachers’ Association, and The National
Audubon Society.Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home,

Harbour, Carol
Carol Jean Harbour, 77, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully in her home on
Monday, Aug. 18, 2008. She was born on Jan. 28, 1932, in Terre Haute, to Nathan and
Bonnie Brandonburg McGrew. She graduated from Garfield High School in 1949, then
went on to attend Indiana State University. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Owen. Survivors include a daughter, Kelly Ann Harbour and
companion Terry Fields of Shelburn; granddaughter, Cory Ann Lynn Harbour, and
daughter-in-law, Penney Elaine Harbour, both of Terre Haute; a sister, Jerri Newman
and husband Martin of Camarillo, Calif.; stepgrandchildren, Jeff, Carrie, and Brandy
Fields; great-grandchildren, Connor and Mallory Fields; and brothers-in-law, William
Harbour and wife Ann, George Harbour, and Edward Harbour and wife Linda, all of
Terre Haute. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Brandon Harbour;
a sister, Ruth Power; brother-in-law, Joseph Power; and sister-in-law, Jewel
Harbour.Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St.

Jackson, Carol
Carol L. Stevens Jackson, 60, of Terre Haute, passed away at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday, Aug.
19, 2008, in her residence. She was born Jan. 28, 1948, in Chicago, to Reno Casassa
and Muriel Hansen Casassa. She worked in customer service at National Printing
Convertors in Brazil. Survivors include her father; husband, Steve Jackson; sons, Jeff
Stevens and wife Kara, Jeremy Jackson and wife Dorothy; daughters, Jamie Carey and
husband Marc, and Kourtney Jackson; brother, Bill Casassa; grandchildren, Cody,
Michael, Bekah, Brea and Bub; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in
death by her mother; husband, Mick Stevens, in 1994; and daughter, Teresa Stevens.
She was a member of American Legion Post 346 Ladies Auxiliary and AMVETS Post
No. 2 Ladies Auxiliary. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Mattox-Wood Funeral

Haase, Lila G.
Lila G. Haase, 96, of Terre Haute died at 2:08 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, at Union
Hospital. She was born Oct. 15, 1911, in Terre Haute, to Otto Harms and Wilhemia
Lillencamp Harms. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Roy Haase, died in 1978.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Powers and husband David; grandchildren, Karen
Hayes, John Bealmear, Randell Powers, Andrea Shepherd, Sonny Chatham, and Sam
Powers; great-grandchildren, Brent Powers and Amanda, Joshua Powers, Andrew
Shepherd, Tyler Shepherd, and Adam Lyday; and several nieces and nephews. She
also was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ernest and Otto Harms; and
sisters, Francis Dilley, Carrie Anderson and Charlotte Wild.She loved to work in her
yard and plant flower. She also loved to spend time with her grandchildren. Services
are 2 p.m. Thursday at Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 N. Lafayette Ave., with the
Rev. Bill Herb officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is noon until

Lloyd, Giala Maxine Layher
Giala Maxine Layher Lloyd, 84, of Terre Haute, died at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008,
in Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on Feb. 23, 1924, in
Brazil, to James F. Carlin and Mary E. Bundy Carlin. She was a retired grocery clerk
and was also a driver for Senior Services.Survivors included two stepsons, Gordon E.
Lloyd and Philip B. Lloyd; one niece, Ginger Clark and her husband Don; great-nieces,
Pam Clark, Julia Lang, Mary Carlin and Esther Carlin; and great-nephews, Gene Clark,
Bobby Carlin and Jason Carlin. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John
P. Layher, whom she married July 15, 1944; her second husband, Eugene Lloyd, whom
she married Sept. 28, 1985; one sister, Rhoda P. Carlin; and three brothers, Elsworth,
Claude and Clifford Carlin. She was a member of Eastside Church of Christ, Terre
Haute Home Economics Club, where she was a 50-year member, Terre Haute
Conservation Club and Ladies of the Moose.Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday in
Callahan-DeBaun Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, with Abe Miller officiating.

Mattox, Amos Lee
Amos Lee Mattox, 79, of Terre Haute, died at 6:46 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2008, in his
residence. He was born on May 25, 1929, in Vigo County, to John Clayton Mattox and
Myrtle Mae Bridgewater Mattox. He was a 1947 graduate of Fontanet High School. He
retired in 1986 as an extruder at Hercules and also from American Vitrified. Survivors
include his wife, Ruth Marlene Hayne Mattox; son, Gary Lee Mattox; daughters, Vicki
Lynn Larson and Cheryl Ann Wrightsman; sister, June Mattox Williams; five
grandchildren, Holly Marie Mullen and her husband Brandon, Amos Joseph “A.J.”
Mattox, Elizabeth Ruth Mattox, Glennie Wrightsman and Dusty Wrightsman; four great-
grandchildren; and his best buddies, Madison and Gavin.A special thanks to his son-in-
law, Danny Larson, and daughter-in-law, Mary Mattox.He was preceded in death by his
parents; brothers and sisters, Cora Briddick, Chester Mattox, Hester Cuthbertson,
Mable Ames, John Edgar Mattox, Herschel Mattox, Virgil Mattox and Maxine Mattox.
During his military service in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division, he received the
Combat Infantryman Badge for excellent performance of duty under enemy fire in
Korea. The 2nd Infantry Division, which gained fame in two of the hardest-fought
battles of the Korean War. It captured “Heartbreak Ridge” in October 1951 and took
“Old Baldy Hill.” He was awarded the Korean Service Ribbon with one campaign star
and United Nations service ribbon.He was a beloved husband, daddy and grandpa and
always there for his family with his strength and his big hugs and his smiling face. He
fought hard not to leave us, but God called him home. He adored Holly, A.J. and
Elizabeth. They were his best buddies. He is our hero. Daddy, you’re a 1,000 flagger.
Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, 4660 N. Lafayette
Avenue, with Pastor Joe Mattox officiating. Entombment is in Roselawn Memorial Park
with military rites at the cemetery conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars 972.
Visitation is 4 to 8 today in the funeral home.

Hochstetler, James K.
James K. Hochstetler, 66, went to be with the lord on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. He
was born to James Hochstetler and Anna Cornell Hochstetler, on May 9, 1942.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Diana; two sons, Don Cook of Schererville and
Dewayne Cook and his wife Katie of Tacoma, Wash.; a daughter, Stacie Warfuel and
husband Rob of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Brandy, Kayla and Jordyn Cook of
West Terre Haute; cousin, Cliff Cornell and wife Donna of Terre Haute.He was retired
from Weston/International Paper, where he worked for 42 years, as well as serving as
union president for United Paperworkers Union. Jim enjoyed playing cards,
horseracing and spending time with his family. He loved talking to people and he never
met a stranger. He loved life as well as the people in his life, especially his
family.Visitation is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, in Roselawn Funeral
Home, 7500 N. Clinton Street. Burial is immediately following visitation.
